I have to go to court in a hour.... help....
 
I missed a court date last month, it was a mistake on my part, it was when I was caring for Mary who had cancer and the date completly slipped my mind, so now they sent a letter with a new date and said something about body attachment..etc.. YIKES!!! anyone ever missed a court date? are they going to take me to jail? I have never been to jail, I only have had 1 speeding ticket in my life and that was when i was young... HELP!!! whats going to happen to me? LOL I'm so scared....
p.s. the bill is from my ex husband who did not pay a past debt....

If you miss a court date generally they will try you in absentia...and find you guilty. Since it's a debt I'd say they have filed a judgement against you....which is the attachment part they mention.

You can file an appeal, but if you are found libel again...you'll be responsible for court costs both times.

No but my stupid husband does. He got a ticket for expired inspection sticker. Cop told him if he didn't want to just send IN the fine, get it inspected, go to court w/ proof of inspection, they'd drop the charge. I called just to see what the fine would be...38 bucks. He forgets to go to court...get the we tried ya already letter...please send in XXXX. He files an appeal, goes to court with his proof...drop the fine but NOT the court costs....both court costs...costs us 80 bucks. Told him ya should'd just paid it in the first place :rolleyes:

The debt part I know from collecting bad debts here at work. Quite a few bad debt people just don't show up for court....so you get to hear...yep, they owe you money, here's your judgment.....which means you may or may NOT ever get any $$.

Ok..i'll quit..you aren't going to jail. So don't worry..lots of people have missed court dates for worse things than that and didn't go to jail..they don't want you just your money..lol..good luck..let me know how it went..

No, in all honesty...this doesn't have to do with speeding, but child support. My ex didn't pay and had a warrant out. When he went to court (I went with him) he didn't have the money, so they put him in handcuffs!! :eek: Well, I freaked b/c the judge said if he didn't come up with the money in X amount of minutes he was going to jail!! So, I ran out to the ATM to help him pay!! When the court got the money, they let him go. So, the moral of the story is...it's all about the money!!! Pay the fine, and run out of there as fast as you can. :thumbup:

PS. My ex was a bung hole, and needless to say I should had left him in jail! :thumbdown

PSS. This was an ex from years ago, not the one I almost married. I'm dumb, but not THAT dumb! :rolleyes:

I sure know that one. Went thru it with my daughter in college. Room mate didn't pay the bills, which were all in our name, and then picked up and left. Took it to arbitration, she agreed she owed the money, we let her set up payments(stupid), paid all but a couple hundred bucks. To file a judgement would cost $500.00. Not worth it. Just crazy how people can get out of paying their debts.
