I wouldn't buy any Koi, at first, I would make sure my goldfish survived first. Koi can be expensive, but you don't have to pay that much!!

I have a friend who lives on the water like we do. Now Scott's backyard is right out of better homes and gardens. Builds this beautiful pond, stocks it with Koi ($800 dollars worth of Koi)....in two days...his Koi had all "disappeared"...buys more fishies....then later while standing at the window in his kitchen...sees Mr. Kingfisher standing over the pond...looking at lunch :eek: Needless to say...Scott doesn't have any fish living in his pond. ;)

My Son built me a pond for mothers day last year. I was his able bodied assistant.

The pond itself if a prefab liner with shelves for plants. The waterfall is also prefab but the stream from the waterfall to the pond is done with liners.

It only took us two weekends but it was a lot of manual labor. Since you live around us if you plan on having fish you need the pond to be 3 feet deep. The water cannot freeze in the winter or the carbon dioxide will build up and kill the fish. THe have little ice breakers to prevent this.

Cost wise I think the pond, rocks, plants and fish cost approx $1000.00 but then we added lights. etc. I love hearing the water at night since it is under my bedroom window. Hus says it just makes him want to pee. (men).

Oh back to pond. Creating the stream from the water fall was done with dirt we used from the pond hole. I had alot of boulders in my back yard so they were used for the waterfall. (that was a big cost savings). I used the flat rocks, sandstone used in landscaping to surround the pond liner and hide and build up the outeredges of the stream. We then used riverrocks to line the stream.

I only have gold fish bought at the pond store around $6 - 9 a piece they actually survived the winter but I have no idea where the frogs went.
