Chicken Pox!!
 

:eek: I just came from the dr with my 6 yr old and was told that he has the chicken pox!!! He's had the shot but apparently we are seeing an epidemic of chicken pox(with or without the shot) and the mumps here right now, so I'm told.

Poor baby is miserable. Anyone else having this in their area?

I live in WA State and I just went through this with all of my children a few weeks ago. All of them had also had the vaccination and still came down with a mild case. The doctor said there is a huge outbreak in my area right now.

Good luck, oh, and a small piece of advice........Aveeno Oatmeal Bath works great on reliefing the itch!!

Thanks about the Aveeno Oatmeal Bath thing. I completely forgot about that! My son's case is pretty bad. He's popping out EVERYWHERE!!!

LOL, the first thing he wanted was Ice Cream!!! Of course he got it :)

Oh.. at Easter yesterday, three of the kids had em..
I had them 2 years ago,.. picture that, got them from bf's daughter,, nice at 36 years old. :eek: Not pretty! It was horrible, on my hands, bottom of my feet which killed! In my ears,, OHHHH! I did alot of the Aveeno Oatmeal baths. And Benodryl.

There have been a lot of kids in our area that have come down with Chicken Pox that have had the vaccine. Haven't heard of any mumps here yet.

Doesn't sound like the vaccine is working too well :eek: . My boys had all had chicken pox before the vaccine came out, so we never had to get it.

Oh you poor thing!! My mom just informed me that she's never had them! She's calling her dr now. She's 71, not a good time to get them :(

No it's not, it is not pleasant at all! The only thing was I had mine and they scabbed up and I was only off work for a week, most of the kids are off for 2. it was bad and I had a ton, but they went away quicker. :confused: Even though when I came back to work, I'm sure I scared quite a few people.. :eek:

My kids had them before the vaccine was even available. Not sure if you have any more kids in the house other than your 6 year old but if you do, ask your doctor about getting Zovirax for the others. My pediatrician told me several years ago when she diagnosed my older one with them that it would only be a matter of time (15-21 day incubation period) before my youngest would come down with them. She said second cases in the house are usually (not always) worse than the first case and she would prescribe the Zovirax at the onset of the second child's chicken pox. Sure enough, two weeks later, Taylor came down with them - got Zovirax started within 24 hours and his outbreak was not bad at all.

You've been given some wonderful advice on treating his symptoms (no cure, it has to run it's course). Use the Aveeno Oatmeal baths to help with the itching and give benadryl too (I'm sure your doctor told you about that). Main thing is to do what you can to help prevent him scratching them. Don't let him get too hot as that makes the itching worse - keep him cool. Oh, and lots and lots of ice cream and popsicles :D Best of luck to you and your little one!

Thanks for the advice. This one is my "caboose" :) I have 5 children and this one is the only one that got the vaccination. All the others had the chicken pox. I thought for sure I was home free......NOT! LOL I had 2 that came down with chicken pox while we were on vacation......nonetheless, at the BEACH!! It was horrible. One was on the verge of hospitalization.

I just so hope that my mom is immune. She went through 4 children and 19 grandchildren that had chicken pox and never got them. Why she didn't tell me that she never had them, I have NO idea.

Now I feel guilty :(

You need to be careful to not expose your Mom. I've always heard that elderly people can get shingles when exposed to chicken pox. Of course I'm not sure what qualifies you as "elderly" because I had shingles when I was 31 and again at 44!!

Of course it was just Easter and so he was around my mom. So, all I can do is take it from there. Still waiting to hear from her dr.

How horrible your vacation must've been for those babies! Chicken pox are miserable by themselves....but add heat into the mix....YIKES! Here's hoping your little "caboose" is feeling all better sooner versus later and prayers that your mom doesn't come down with them. Keep us posted on how the little guy feels.

Better they get them young than old ..i got mumps when i was 19 and boy i was miserble both sides where so swallon my mom said only a mom could love me :(

Awww..I hope that outbreak stays away from me!! I havent ever had them and they dont sound too fun to me :( I hope your baby feels better!!!

i had them 2x. once when i was in third grade again when i was 25 yr old. i got them from my niece. i thought they were zits. i went and got a facial and when the facialist extracted them she was like i never saw green puss. the next day i found out my niece has chicken pox. i felt so bad for the facialist. no scars. just bad salon etiquette. (the facialist never caught them + she was pregnant) :eek:

I got mine while in the hospital with a body cast..talk about being miserable...Calamine lotion and a blow dryer was my friend back then....I wish your son a speedy Get Well!! Also COLD Juice of any kind.. :getwellso

OMGosh, that had to be Horrible!!! I went into the hospital for surgery and got e-coli!!

That's the same thing I thought but we're seeing them pop up here even with the shots. My son's case seems to be milder than my other kid's were, that didn't have the shot. Maybe due to the shot? I don't think they really know.

I'm pretty sure the chicken pox shot is a weakened live version of it, so yes you can get a mild case from the shot. And about 5 out of 100 children who get the shot will still get chicken pox. I hope he starts feeling better soon! I remember having those & it sucked! :( I haven\'t heard of any chicken pox outbreaks here in Kansas but we have had some mumps outbreaks.
