i live in sf where we have a city law requiring the spaying and neutering of pit bulls and pit bull mixes. there's a misconception that the city passed a law to ban pit bulls and pit bull mixes and it's absolutely untrue. the city ordinance requires the neutering and spaying of pit bulls and pit bull mixes. but this is not without exception. show breeders can acquire a breeding permit from the city and be exempted from the requirements. the city does not say say you're not allowed to own one. it does not say they ought to be exterminated. in sf, a majority of all vicious and dangerous dog cases handled by the authorities are pit bull related and a majority of the shelter population being pit bull and pit bull mixes. on any given day, there's dozens of posts on craigslist from people trying to give away their pitbull/pitbull mix puppies because their pet was "accidently bred". i don't see anything wrong with stricter regulation about who should breed a pit bull. the way i see it, PETS of any breed should be neutered or spayed anyways. it would reduce the number of irresponsible owners from randomly or accidentally breeding their dogs without regards to breed standards, health and welfare. by limiting the breeding, the breed population could be better controled and we can reduce the number of dogs winding up in shelters and in need of being euthanized because they are not adoptable for one reason or another. in the big picture, isn't that better for the breed? i don't quite understand the objection to a law that's out to promote more responsible pet ownership and reduce the number of dogs that wind up in shelters and are subject to euthanization? |

This site is exactly what I'm talking about... http://www.classicpitbulls.com/home.htm They sell dogs that are 'game' (i.e. completely uncontrollable killing machines). They are proud of the fact their dogs are 'human aggressive'. Have a look at the first male dog on their site... 'a serious dog for a serious person' and if you are a stranger 'he will attack immediately with intent to kill' How do you propose walking this dog in the street? Does 'stranger' include old people or children walking past? If I lived in New Jersey, I'd be reporting this site and it's owner to the police. This is a clear danger to general public safety and an absolute menace After the almost-attack on my dog this weekend, I'm going to push for the complete banning of any bull terrier or mastiff in the area that I live in. The sooner these animals are gone, the better |
i'm going to report them anyways. 'cause they "ship nationwide" which means those dogs can go anywhere. personally i wouldn't agree with banning the breed altogether. like roosters are illegally bred for cockfighting, but i wouldn't make roosters illegal. any breed can be bred and trained to be aggressive, but it's the fault of the breeder/owner, not the dog. imho, dogs with such aggressive behaviors should never have been bred, not due to the breed, but due to its temperament. that particular breeder's philosophy about the purpose and temperament of pitbulls does a great disservice to the breed and gives more reason why pitbulls are targeted by breed specific legislature. it's just so sad. |
