| USDA Report Finds That AgriProcessors Violated Humane, Kosher Laws USDA Report Finds That AgriProcessors Violated Humane, Kosher Laws PETA is calling on government inspectors to be fired after a federal probe revealed that they accepted gifts and kept quiet about illegal mutilations of live animals. After reviewing video footage taken by an undercover PETA investigator, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has concluded that Postville, Iowa-based AgriProcessors—the largest glatt kosher slaughterhouse in the world—repeatedly violated provisions of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA) while federal inspectors looked on and did nothing. Workers were caught on videotape shocking cows in the face with electric prods, ripping out their windpipes while they were still conscious, and dumping the animals onto the floor as they struggled in terror while blood gushed from their throats. The report belies AgriProcessors’ earlier claims that the cruel methods it used to kill cows complied with federal and kosher regulations. The USDA report also states that some inspectors accepted gifts of meat from AgriProcessors, failed to report violations, and committed “other acts of misconduct.” Despite the USDA’s findings, the assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Iowa has declined to press charges against AgriProcessors. PETA is requesting reports on what actions are being taken against the delinquent inspectors and calling for their immediate dismissal. The HMSA stipulates that animals cannot be dismembered until they are rendered insensible to pain, including during ritual slaughter. This was not the case at AgriProcessors. The investigations by both PETA and the USDA found that more than 10 percent of the animals whose tracheas were ripped out tried to stand up and writhed on the floor in pools of their own blood. In more than four hours of videotape shot by PETA’s investigator, more than 20 percent of the 278 animals shown being killed were clearly conscious after having their throats cut and their tracheas ripped out by workers. http://www.goveg.com/f-agri_violators.asp

| Wow, that is horrible! Unbelievable to me that people can do those kinds of things to any living thing..just unbelievable, I view the videos on the PETA site, so I'm becoming much more familiar with the fact, as hard as they are to watch, it is about awareness, to me.. Thanks for this info.

| For the life of me, I just don't understand how people can do that, when there are humane ways to do it,, how can people be so inhumane, and live with themselves, and actually participate, I understand not everyone is an animal lover and they see them as food , but how can even a non animal lover watch them suffer, when THEY DONT HAVE TO?!

| I could'nt help but be drawn to your post. I just got done looking up alot of sites and articles on our meat supply. I was shocked and saddened by what i found, and if just half of what I read is true, we are all too trusting of the USDA looking after us. The USDA cannot order a recall on contaminated meat, it's strickly volentary by the co. The U.S. only tests about 2% of there downer cows while Japan test 100% of there cows for mad cow. An insider in the USDA spoke to United Press International and said "Most agency veternarians know mad cow is prevalent and epidemic (in U.S. herds). We're not talking about one or two cases . The USDA has such a cohesive relationship with industry... that it wants to protect the $70 billion beef industry than the consumer," In 1998 the USDA reclassified a number of animal diseases as part of a pilot project, allowing them in meat as long as lesions are cut away. The USDA claims that cancer, airsacculitis ( poultry pneumonia), lymphomas, sores, infectious arthritis, and illness caused by intestinal worms, rarely if ever, present a public health risk. It's common for a dead or diseased animal to be rushed to slaughter in order for the rancher to optimize his returns. Con Agra had the second largest recall of e-coli tainted beef in history. Con Agra intercepted 20 tons of the e-coli meat from it's Greenley plant that was headed to become hamburgers for a fast food chain. The meat was relabled "For Cooking Purposes Only", and shipped to International Home Foods, a Con Agra co. in Pa. IHF brands include Chef Boyardee, Libby's canned meats, and Pam cooking spray. It ens up in canned chili, meat spag. sauce, beef ravoli ,pet food or in a t.v. dinner. That a consumer might buy a meal containing recalled meat is legal and wholesome according to the USDA. Cooking will render any pathogen harmless, they say. This is common practice for contaminated meat even if it's found in the factory before it's shipped out. Just cook it and it's fine. It has poop in it, but now it's clean poop. They do the same for milk. The cow is drugged into producing about 100 lbs. of milk a day, which is 10 times the natural amount. Because of this constant milking the cows get mastitis of the udders, which 9is an infection. When the milking machine is hooked up the pus ends up in the milk along with e-coli from living in their own waste. When the milk is pasturized it's killed,so it's clean pus. to call the animals abused is too kind, their tortured. The Animal Welfare Act like so many other org.'s do not apply to animals for food. Thousands of cows are butchered alive . The worker has a hard time keeping pace with 300-350 cows per hour, so he doesn't always stun the cow in the head completely , so the cow goes down the line fully conscience, awake, eyes wide open in complete terror, kicking, while it's buthered alive piece by piece. The same happens to chickens, their supposed to slit their necks to bleed out. But it doens't always happen. The chicken is thrown into a large vat of scalding water and he kicks, flops, screams, wings flailing about and their eyeballs pop out while they drown to death. This is very common. I could go on and on.about this subject, it's just disturbing to think about. I had a book called "101 Reasons Why I'm a Vegaterian" it was very enlightening. I also was on some sites called: www.factoryfarming.com, www.organicconsumers.org,www.notinmyfood.org. and many many more. I will never look at meat the same way again. I am now in the process of looking for an organic farm near me, because my husband is still going to want to eat meat. But it won't be from the store. I'm also going to look into making some veg. meals a couple times a week.We really can't be too trusting that someone is looking out for our welfare just start looking yourself. Sorry this was so long, but I just started looking myself and it's all I can think about now. |

| RRRJeep861 thanks for the informative reply. when i was younger (high school age) i never knew about the horrible factory farm conditions and wasn't able to make the link between 'hey this is a living animal' and 'hey now this animal is in little mashed up bits that is my hamburger'. seeing videos like the above and doing research about it on my own really opened my eyes. i don't have anything against people who eat meat, i just want them to be aware of where their food comes from and be responsible consumers such as yourself by seeking out organic farms and educating themselves about all the hormones and chemicals they are consuming in their meat.

| something to consider... many domestic slaughterhouses, in the process of slaughtering the livestock, will stun the animal so it's unconscious then hang it by it's hind legs and slit its main artery (ie throat), draining the animal of its blood as it dies. stunning the animal before the kill was considered more humane. however, in the Jewish and Muslim custom, it's against religious laws to consume animals that's unconscious prior to the slaughter. so the animal must be conscious at the point of death. which means hanging a live conscious pig upside down, slit its throat, allowing it to die from the bleeding then continue the meat processing. something to consider the next time one buys "kosher meat". the process of producing animal based food products is not pretty. i remember visiting an egg farm a long time ago and seeing a dark barn filled with thousands of chickens kept in cages suspended at about 5 feet high. the cages were too small for the chickens to do anything else other than eat, sleep, drink, and lay eggs. they couldn't even stand. and there they stay for the rest of their lives. laying eggs. how sad is that. animals make a lot of sacrifices to make human lives comfortable. many don't think about how that steak lands on your dinner plate and think the source of that raw piece of meat is at the store in the nice little styrofoam trays and plastic saran wrap as if meat grows on trees and no cruelty is involved. ignorance is bliss. it's good that this article is brought to light because animal cruelty does not just happen in other countries, but happens every day en mass in this country. now i'm not advocating everyone switch to a vegetarian diet. i didn't. but it's good to be aware of your food source and make an effort to support humane efforts to manage animals even if they are led to the slaughter. |

The proper method of slaughter is suppose to be a quick, deep stroke across the throat with a perfectly sharp blade with no nicks or unevenness. This method is painless, causes unconsciousness within two seconds, and is widely recognized as the most humane method of slaughter possible. But as we can see from the video, it doesn't always end up that way. | |

| oh, And in hindsight, the pig is not a good example in that case. Pig is not kosher and consider unfit for human consumption in both Jewish and Muslim religions. |
