I used to be fine with it until I had a bad experience where the novicane wore off a little bit before he started drilling. Now it just makes me cringe!!! |
I work for a dentist and I see it ALL the time. Do they have nitrous oxide (laughing gas), sometimes that helps. I would have to say the funniest is when it is the men. Sorry guys!!!!!!! But no, you are not alone. I would have to say I much prefer the dentist than the gynecologist. Now that one about brings me to tears. |
My dentist gives me an antiangziety (sp) drug to take before I come in to have any work done. I have to go in the week after next to get some work done and he told me to come by next week to pick up my perscription for one pill. It helps alot, I use to cry in the dentist chair. I am so afraid of dentists! :( I tense up and break out in a cold sweat and alot of the time my jaw will clamp shut... you are so not alone in your fear!!!! I too cry on my way there and on the way home  To make matters worse, I am very allergic to flouride, I throw up if I ingest even a small amount. I've been going to the same dentist for well over 15 years but I am still scared that he is going to forget about my allergy and I am going to throw up all over him  |
dentist Sweetie...I do not know what the dentists are like now in the UK..BUT in the 50's/60's it was a torture chamber. They used no novacaine. I had my teeth filled with nothing but a pat on the shoulder. I know it must be so different now...at least I sure hope so. Here in the US, I pick a Dentist who caters to cowards. They are listed just that way in the phone book..if my dental insurance doesn't accept them..then I pay it myself. All they pay for is cleaning anyway...I am new here in Florida and go in March for a cleaning to a new dentist..he is listed as Dr. NO-Pain..and will give you a sedative for cleaning..heck, he will give you a pill to sit in the office and wait..that is the worst for me..LOL I hate the smell of the place!!! I have had root canal with not an ounce of discomfort, even had two teeth pulled wide awake..but for some reason cleaning and scraping does me in..LOL I need to be medicated. And by the way..when we lived in the UK my brother fell and cut his forehead. The doctor came and stitched it up in the kitchen with no novacaine..heck, my father said next time he would do it..I always worried about getting cut and my father sewing me up using my mothers sewing thread and needle. |
You are so not the only one, I HATE the dentist! :p |
I think I'm one of the few people in the world that LOVE going to the dentist. If I could afford it I would have my teeth cleaned every week, I love love love it! I know, I'm a little crazy! |

[QUOTE=Claire]My dentist gives me an antiangziety (sp) drug to take before I come in to have any work done. I have been frightened since my teens, i have just changed dentists and have been offered a sedative for the 1st time ever!!!! Can't believe i've gone all those years without one. |
When I was a kid, I bit my dentist, and he eventually had to put a rubber block in my mouth so i didn't take his hand off. And so started the love relationship between dentists and me |
I am a hygienist and I still hate the dentist!! :D |
I don't mind at all, but maybe that's because I've never had a cavity :D |

I may be the biggest chicken! I make my dentist a bit nervous so he gives me mepergan and a xanax prior to each visit and boosts it a bit with nitrous oxide. Oh, and I must have a fan. I am sure they dread to see me come as much as I dread going! |
Kicking and screaming. My old dentist was my brother in law. He's actually a orthodontist/dentist who put himself through school.(he comes from a wealthy family). He's awesome! You can't feel his shots and if you're in a lot of pain he'll give you another shot(per your request, and only up to the number of shots it would take to pull out a tooth. Otherwise complications could occur). But Last time.... I had a tooth with a cavity on my lower tooth third from the center on my left. Well he gave me gas ( I was feeling pretty good), then he gave me my shots (everythings fine) then he comes back and begins working(UH OH) I could feel every little move he made!!! He gave me another shot(still could feel every move), then I continue crying (he tells me I shouldn't be feeling anything because he gave me enough shots to pull a tooth out). So I know this is bad but I've put off the dentist for a while now (three or four years) because I haven't had the money and because the next dentist I go to is going to HAVE TO put me under. I have a hole in that tooth and I'm just going to have them pull it out. Otherwise it'll need a root canal. But either way I'm getting it out and getting a fake one put in. (I know that if I do need a root canal, and I probably will, they'll still have to perform that. but I'm set on it getting taken out). I'll wait a little to have my fake tooth put in, because I'll be broke for awhile but that's life. I just wish I would have done it sooner, wish I had the money to. That's really what's been holding me back. Well that and my fear of a new strange person poking around my mouth. Of all the doctors to go to I prefer the gyno. |

My friend loves the dentist too, she's out of her mind. I LOVE my dentist, he's the greatest person ever. I've been seeing him since I was a few days old but I dread going. |
I also have a wonderful pain free dentist. There is sleep or sedation dentistry now too so it is not bad at all . You can just go to sleep. |

OH goodness that's what I need!!!!!! Do you know how much it usually runs???? |
I've had quite a lot of dental work done, including 4 root canals and 4 crowns...2 of them being on my top front teeth after our accident. The dentist doesn't bother me a bit. My dentist is very nice, he'll give you an extra shot if you need it, he stops for a breather when you want and he'll give you something to help you relax if you need it. The thing that does bother me at the dentist is that goo they put in your mouth to make forms for crowns...now that's some nasty stuff! Someone mentioned xanax...can't take those! I was given 1 pill in the smallest dose so I could have an MRI done on my head and it totally knocked me out for a whole day. My appointment was at 10 a.m. and my husband had to carry me inside when we got home, I was out until almost 10 that night! On the up side though...I don't remember a thing! :D |
Thanks for the reminder... I need to make an appointment for a checkup next week. I hate the cleanings, I feel like they are scraping my took right out of my mouth. |
I go every six months for check ups. But as soon as they call to make an appointment my teeth start to hurt!!! I can't wait for it to be over. It's something about sitting in that chair. |
Well if i'm not frightened enough..... had an appointment this week to have a tooth extracted. I was awake most of night thinking about it(as i always do) Next morning getting ready to go when the phone rings...it was the dental surgery to say the dentist was sick and they had to cancel my appointment. At 1st i was quite pleased i didnt have to go but then hubby reminded me i'll just have to have another sleepness night when the appointment is reaaranged  |
Ohhhhhh, finally a thread that I can totally relate too. I absolutely HATE the dentist. So much that until a month ago I haven't been in 10 years and now need all sorts of work. My fear began when I was 6 y/o and the dentist went to put novicaine (sp?) in my mouth and I screamed so he back handed me. My mom ripped me out of the chair and took me home. My second incident was when I was 16, I was having my wisdom teeth pulled and I woke up out of anethestica (sp?) to find the dentist strattling me and yanking on my mouth, which I am told how they do it, and then I went back to la la land. Last month I went to a new dentist and am having laser dentistry done. I love it, no pain!!!! |

You should be very very proud of yourself. It is very difficult to have such a strong fear and then go ahead and do it anyway. In my books that is a sign of true bravery. Way to go Yorkiepip... and all of you other guys who have Dental Phobia. |
Funny story that might help... When I was a kid they had to put me to sleep to do dental work! I would scream and bite and throw a fit!! So for the story.... I used to work with a woman in SC who was very Southern and very prim and proper. She spoke with a heavy blue-blooded Southern accent. Her name wasn't Judy... she was Judith, and she didn't hesitate to correct you, either... One day we were talking about dentists and I told her how much I hated to go them. With a dead serious look on her face, she said to me with her slow drawl "Why Sherry Lynn, you need to do what I do when I go to the dentist. I sit back in that chair, reach over and grab his privates, look him dead in the eye and say 'Now we aren't going to hurt each other are we?'....And I've never had a problem at the dentists." I laughed SO HARD!!!! It was SO out of character for her and SO funny!! Now everytime I even think about a dentist, I chuckle! That little story has gotten me through so many visits to the dentist that it is priceless to me!! |

One time, I didn't take laughing gas (you know, me trying to be tough - thinking I had natural childbirth, I can take this) - well, first the shots just about killed me and for two days afterwards, my mouth was so sore where the shots were given (like a sharpt twinge of pain). The next time I went in, I took laughing gas (bubble gum flavored) and I was fine. I wasn't sore afterwards like I was without. But one shot that was right under my nose brought a tear to my eye! I think the laughing gas is worth the $20 more. Quote:

I go kicking and screaming! Actually, it doesn't even hurt, I just don't like the thought! |
