As many wild animals become endangered pouching still continues, unbelievable. Black Rino's are on the critically endangered list yet poachers are still hunting and killing for the horn only. A day will soon come where the once wild free roaming animals that will be alive will be in zoo's.

I think the guy is pretty much one of the most hated person in the country right now....

This was Cecil....the famous lion and he was LURED away from a SANCTUARY so this freakin' dentist could kill him over a 40 hour period. The dentist shot him w/ an arrow, gravely injuring him and then stalked him for 40 hours while he was injured before *finally* killing this poor animal.

Utterly barbaric. If only humans were *half* as respectable as animals, my God. :(

Disgusts me. I respect those who hunt for food w/ respect for the animal...any others...forget it, you deserve no respect for thrill killing.

totally agree! interesting that now the parasite of a human who did this is now the hunted and has gone in to hiding...maybe giving him just a glimpse of what Cecil felt like..oh wait but he isn't carrying a high powered arrow in his flesh, so nope he won't! just sickens me!

This dentist also killed a rhino, and illegally killed a black bear in the US. He also paid out 100,000 in a case of sexual assault to one of his female staff. A real winner!

Why do these jerks get off, killing endangered wildlife? There is no real skill to killing animals lured with food from their sanctuaries. He at least is paying a price with a ruined business, but I feel for any innocent staff or family, who will suffer due to his choices.

As horrible/tragic this event is... One (only) good thing I see from this is that it's bringing awareness by the mass. Unfortunately, this person isn't the only one that enjoys taking life for "enjoyment". I believe there was another before him. A cheerleader from TX Tech who posted a picture of herself and the beautiful lion she "hunted". And she sure is proud of herself...

'hunters' in the world but I think its a new low when you lure an animal out of a sanctuary where it is supposed to be protected! Karma is catching up with this dentist, sounds like much of his "normal" has been destroyed

this story gets worse and worse...he paid a land owner to "hunt" on his property, they strapped a dead animal (food) to the top of a car to lure Cecil away from the sanctuary, and tried to destroy the GPS collar he wore.. this guy is a true representation of evil on earth!

I couldn't agree with you more. There is no "sport" in hunting an animal.

I read that people saw on his website that he likes wildlife and "photographing" them. I guess he didn't think putting what he really does was appropriate. Maybe he got the meaning for "shooting" mixed up? :rolleyes:

This will ruin his business and he will have to sell those vacation homes he has all over the country. Sorry dude, no more paying $50,000 to shoot endangered animals.

The sad thing is, he also ruined the lives of his employees who are now out of a job. How can they support their families now bc he was a greedy idiot?!

This type of thing makes me feel embarrassed to be an American. I could literally slap the teeth right out of this dentists face.

luv the title warning! I also love that Cecil's murder has created an increase in donations to the study for which he wore the collar. I hope that the dentist has to give Cecil's head (the trophy) back. I would rather see it buried or on honorable display at the reserve .

Not confirmed that Jericho has been killed. I sure hope not. If so, seems like there are no more males in their group and the femals and cubs are at risk of being killed by other rival group's males.

I just heard this I'm praying its a huge mistake..the pride & cubs would most def be at risk...just makes me sick to my stomach :(

This whole thing made me sick. Especially seeing pictures of those poor animals that he was so proudly posing with. How can anyone but a sicko find enjoyment in killing those beautiful animals for fun. I hope he has to give up the trophy too.

The "Safari Club International" (a rather unfortunate misnomer for this group of "Trophy Hunters") has a membership approaching 50,000.

There are just 25,000 wild lions left, so if they all want a "Cecil" then they will have to start hunting in pairs.

If they want Cheetah, only one in ten of them will get to bag one of the remaining 5,000.

If they want a white rhino, then only one in 25 Safari members will get to have one.

If they want a snow leopard, then it will be a real bun-fight, because only one in 250 of these "Safari lovers" will get to shoot one of these animals, before there aren't any more to kill.

So just go out there and get it all over with as quickly as possible. When there are no more "trophies" left to hunt, there will be nothing more to discuss, and you "big strong men" can gloat over how many skins you have hanging on your Walls. Then, you can charge the public to come see them... Call yourselves the "Safari-That-Was" Club.

This is really disturbing to see the actual numbers. It makes me so angry that these people have to get their thrills from needlessly killing these beautiful animals. What is wrong with people?

It all boils down to greed and corruption. The hunting fraternity will throw out all kinds of justifications for their "passion". They even claim that the huge fees they pay go towards "conservation". I was born in Africa and lived there for 45 years and I am absolutely certain that any fees being paid by these "big tough men" are conserving only the bank balances of the corrupt officials who "legalise" the process. It's a stinking, foul business through and through. And don't believe for a minute that the Zimbabwean authorities (such as they are) care one hoot about Cecil or any other wild animal in their sad country. They don't... As a child, we used to travel from Zambia through Zimbabwe (then Southern Rhodesia) on our way to Mocambique (Beira) for seaside holidays. We'd have to cross the Zambezi river - usually at a place called Chirundu. The river runs through a very wide "valley" - about 25 miles wide each side, and back in the mid 1960's it was a "natural" game reserve. As kids, we would look forward to this part of the journey with excitement and, in the course of a few hours, would see scores - if not hundreds - of different animals - usually including what are known as the "Big 5" - Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Rhino and Leopard.

Today, the valley is practically bare of all these large animals - 95% of them have been poached. Much of the forest has been chopped down to make charcoal.

First-world "hunters" (and this includes guys in the UK, who also go shooting big game) would never have seen Africa like I did as a child - literally FULL of animals. So when they go there, they cannot make a comparison of what it used to be like, compared to today, when hardly any animals roam about in purely natural surroundings. The tiny handful of big wild animals that are left are now in little more than "enclosures" (the game parks), and even here their numbers are dwindling.

It is a tragedy that these guys who hunt rare game - and who each fork out hundreds of thousands of dollars/pounds to kill an animal, could be doing so much more if they put that money DIRECTLY into species preservation.

I cry for Africa - its animals and its people... Cecil is just the tip of a very large iceberg.
