So that's why my tomatoes crack? We have stink bugs in my area and my tomatoes also have little black marks from them biting the tomatoes. I'll have to try spraying them with a garlic powder solution. Other than that I have found I grow poison ivy really well  .If anyone wants some I have extra! |

Killed me a RED caterpillar today 3 Attachment(s) So we noticed something had been nibbling on our Boston ivy the last few days but couldn't find anything. This afternoon when we went out for lunch we saw an entire branch had been eaten and then looked down and saw the FATTEST red caterpillar! OMG I was so mad. I knocked him off the ivy and killed him. He spewed out all this green goo which was most likely my ivy's digested leaves. SOOOO mad. Here you can see how well the ivy had been growing since no leaves at all from this past winter (they go dormant in the winter). And it was starting to nicely frame the doorway, which I've always wanted a front door with ivy all around. Now it probably won't grow back til next spring. The 3rd pic is another ivy in the front of the house (behind the silk tree). Attachment 406495 Attachment 406496 Attachment 406497 |
3 Attachment(s) Goes without saying, but I *love* seeing the vine! I adore vine covered fences, walls, houses etcetera...can't get enough! This is a pic of our backyard fence vine...it took 10 years for it to get this thick (although, right now it looks kinda scraggy bc it's going a bit dormant from the heat....)... |
What kind of vine is that? I see a lot of seed pods on it. It's very full! We have cat claw vines here too that do really well in the heat. Some are so full and others are really thin. They are all throughout the neighborhood too and some of them flower in the late summer but ours hasn't yet. |
I'm pretty sure it's also Cat's Claw. |
Are you sure? Cat claw grows up. If a big chunk falls off then obv it goes downward, but your pic looks like it's a trailing vine. Anyhoo it's awesomely huge. Looks like it's doing great. Well guess what. Another boston ivy was hit yesterday, and my mint plant which was growing like crazy is half eaten. I'm fuming mad!!! |
Im excited I grew blue heavenly morning glories, Mamouth sunflowers, autumn glory sunglowers and zenias from seeds this yr and they all grew and are ready to plant in the ground. I have trellis in my backyard that Im going to plant the morning glory by so they will grow up and and a place in the back yard for the sunflowers dont know what I will do with the zenias yet. My front porch has all kinds of little plants that Ive started as starts from other plants. Ive had alot of fun gardening and water gardening this yr |

Meanwhile, my hibiscus are just sucking big time. Darn it all :(. Thought they'd be SO much easier than this! Quote:

Cat claws do get the bean pods, but so do a lot of vines. Usually the pods don't show up until after they start flowering. They are yellow flowers. The tell tale sign is they have claws that look like cat claw (duh LOL) with three "fingers" or claws and they are sharp! |
I haven't got in here often lately... fishing is very good... but I did want to let you know I'm eating mass quantities of zucchini now from my sparse garden of beets, zuchs and tomatoes. Should have our first vine ripened tomato in two days. The dogs are doing real good, even Gucci. Zip and Rambo are doing this sumo wrestling, Zip is super gentle with the pup even though it sounds like he's sitting down to a viking meal. |
Awww sumo wrestling sounds so cute (when it comes to yorkies!). I only had three tiny tomatoes come in so far but they sure were much tastier than the supermarket ones! Only thing that is doing well is my sweet basil. Thai basil is hanging in there. Mint WAS doing good. I can't find that bugger that's eating it, but I'm sure he has fresh minty breath. |

I love vines too! You just have to be careful what type so that they don't destroy what you are growing them on. We have trumpet vines, honeysuckle, clematis and a wisteria. Things have taken a hit this year because of the heat wave (10+ days of 105 and up), but it seems like things are cooling down. We just bought 6 more clematis plants to grow on our fence this weekend. Both hubby and myself are obsessed with gardening... It's an expensive hobby! |
We have 5 purple wisteria. Our nursery told us that wisteria doesn't so well in Vegas bc it doesn't get cold enough in the winter to flower. It needs to get below freezing, and at the very coldest, it's usually just above freezing in the winter. We have honeysuckle too but this is the first year. One is doing well, the others are barely hanging in there. |
I just looked up clematis. Beautiful! I haven't seen those in my nursery but I just checked and online said they would be good up to zone 9, which is what we are in. |
1 Attachment(s) Speaking of vines, this is my fall clematis. it is actually one thing I can't seem to fail when it comes to gardening. :D. I had to order this from an online nursery because our shops here don't carry this variety. |
Oh wow. Love that! What variety and what online seller? I may have to order online also. I haven't seen any in our local nurseries, and trust me, we are there weekly! When do they flower (and how many seasons until they flower)? What color is that one? |

I order through Spring Hill Nurseries online. |
Ok thanks for the tips. I'll take a look into it. My passifloras are not doing well. Maybe I will swap them out. We wanted them to grow up and over our patio cover. It hasn't really taken off. Last year (first year) they were growing like 6" per day. This year it's barely sprouting. It reached the top of the posts of the patio cover last year and it's still about the same now. |
Oh, so did I mention I have the world's worst black widow in my yard. She's made this HUGE web and has caught exactly nothing so far! Meanwhile I got bugs all over the yard. If she doesn't get something soon she's gonna starve. |

I have used honey with success. The problem is once I get them to root and I bring them outside the heat kills them. But yeah no need to buy rooting hormone if you already have honey in the house. As far as the black widow, I don't mind spiders at all--IF they do their job! Her web is in an out of the way place that the dogs can't get to (up high) but if she doesn't start catching something, she won't have to worry about me evicting her, she will die from starvation! She only comes out at night. I haven't tried my camera at night yet. Only one little light out back and I doubt it's enough to light up where she is. She's pretty fat though. So I'd assume she's eating something but her web is totally clean. Edit about the honey. I cut the bottom end into a point and dip it in honey, then put it directly in a small pot with dirt, water it, then put the pot in a clear produce bag and tie the top. |
I didn't realize I too could grow clematis here, as long as it's a Zone 9a clematis, cool! |
Well I found out what was eating my mint. I found three small caterpillars this morning. I wondered how big the bugger was bc not much was being eaten each day but I could tell something was nibbling on it. Out of spite I was cutting the mint totally back just so whatever it was wouldn't have anything to eat.....and I touched one with my bare hand by accident! At least it was a small one. I left two as an offering for the black widow. The last one for the birds. Didn't see the black widow last night. I bet she died already. |

I think without killing them the only thing you can really do is prevent the moths from laying the eggs in the first place. I've also read to pick them off by hand and drop them into soapy water but that kills them. I guess not as brutal as what I've been doing but I'm triggered by my anger of them. Lol. The large ones are from huge moths. I mean huge! I killed one a few weeks ago. Took about five smacks before he died. Wingspan about 3". They say you can put row covers on your veggies but for a large plant like bouganvea not possible, plus it's ugly. But that still doesn't solve the issue of the smaller ones. What I've been doing is putting out bird seed and hoping the birds patrol my yard. I love birds except pigeons. Only draw back is bird poop. That way the birds kill them not you. |
1 Attachment(s) Chocolate tomatoes....I have a 15ft row of various tomatoes....just hate posting pics when I need to reduce the image..:( |
Wow, I didn\'t know those existed! Almost looks like a tomatillo without the husk. You were right about my tomatoes. Miracle grow made a huge plant w no yield. So far I got three golf ball sized tomato and now the plant looks like it\'s yellowing and dying. :( at least I know for next year. |
I have mass...but alot of work to post here. From my lap top..About 8 plant full.... |
