What the heck IS safe mode and why is it good? I never have understood it! Can you explain what it is to me? |

Also, there are rare times where your registry might need to be cleaned up. You can find all sorts of free registry clean up programs. :) |

A friend of my sons was able to use something of his to bypass something or the other and get it up, run virus/malware/etc. and he's the one who put Malwarebytes on it, which I used once regularly I got it back again. But eventually that computer ran out of space with all my audio books and photos on it and I had to get my new laptop. It came with Norton Antivirus on it for a free trial but I bought the Internet Security package at the computer store and put it on immediately. I have my Norton on auto-renew so that it's automatically renewed each year. Once I got their Internet Security program, no more viruses or vicious malware has gotten into my computer and I never have to worry about going on any website. I think it's just about $55.00 or so yearly and from the research I did online, well worth the extra protection it gives over just the regular antivirus program. |

Yeah that would probably be if your computer is really messing up. Scanning in normally is probably fine. A few weeks back I scanned my dudes computer with Malwarebytes and it found over 100 threats that his antivirus wasn't picking up. I did it because I noticed his computer was lagging. But now it's running fine. |
I've never paid for any antivirus. I use microsoft security essentials with malwarebytes and my computer has never crashed in 5+ years and I use my computer for EVERYTHING. To make money, some classes, fun... everything. Still runs really good. |

Important: After April 8, 2014, Microsoft will be retiring technical support for Windows XP, including security updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date. If you continue to use Windows XP, your computer might become more vulnerable to security and virus risks. Learn more about end of support for Windows XP. |

Windows 9 coming in 2015, will try its hardest to distance itself from the Windows 8 train wreck | ExtremeTech Except for Java, I like to stay current to keep my computer running like I want so I am on Microsoft 8..................wrong move because if one is on 7 you can easily switch to 8.1 Bet more have never changed and still on 7, they know the people who switch when thinking something better will come available will also purchase the 8.1 ??? so is that a second train wreck? |
In the first paragraph above, I meant to say 'Microsoft Security Essentials' not just Microsoft Essentials. I'm getting professional advice. |

Yes, I've heard that too. I have Windows 8 and before that I had Window 7, so I am still in the green zone. but I did hear they were letting go of support for Windows XP. Yep, it's just another way to make you buy an upgrade I am sure. Sucks. |
But if you do decide to go with another antivirus, make sure you remove norton with their Norton removal tool. Norton is not an easy program to get out of your computer. I worked in tech support dealing with this stuff for a couple years. |

If I sound confused, I am. I think I'll check on Norton 2014 rates. It's not going to be the cheapest I go for, it's just I want to see what I have to be prepared for.....darn I wish my Norton wasn't renewing until after April 8. |
:D:thumbup: I was getting renewal dates mixed up with Netflix renewal, don't ever get old. I logged into my Norton account to see how many days I had left and when I ordered it last time and, it was on April 17, 2013. :yelrotflm:yay_jump::woof: No, I didn't remember my password for Norton, I wrote it down.:D |
No problem here either... thankfully! |
