I used to love Halloween when my children were small, we always gave a ton of candy to the little ghost & goblins..that was so long ago LOL

I still love Thanksgiving & Christmas and some decorations...my dinner this year will be early on Nov 10th my daughter will be home from VA that week, so we will be cooking big bird then.

I am not big on Halloween, not even as a kid. My Dad on the other hand LOVED Halloween. He would dress up and take my sister and I over to my cousin's neighborhood (we lived on a street with one other house!). One year he dressed up as a gorilla, and someone called the cops on him!! LOL!! Thought he was some weirdo following kids around.

I love Christmas!! I put up our tree the second week of November and decorate the inside of the house so that everything is done by Thanksgiving. I love having our Thanksgiving holiday meal with the fireplace going, holiday music playing and just enjoying time with my family. This year won't be the same as Mom passed away in February.

But on 12/26 ALL decorations have to come down. That was a tradition that my Mom followed and I do as well.

Happy Halloween everyone!!

wow it's so interesting to hear everyones take on the holidays. I have to say I enjoy everything about Halloween except for me having to wear a costume. It's weird I really love seeing everyone elses costume but have often skipped a party when costumes were mandatory. Last year I went all out and decorated my front porch, but this year I was to lazy and used the excuse that we are having our portico demolished and a new one is being built any day now. My house is filled with beautiful witch dolls that I have been collecting over the last few years. We get so few trick or treators which I find sad.

My husband and I have no family here in MI so we have started our own Thanksgiving tradition, we eat our annual Thanksgiving crab legs by our fireplace, with some good wine and a movie. Early in the day we just do our chores and by around 6 or 7 we enjoy our meal. Then on Sunday I cook a turkey breast and the trimmings so we can have it as left overs during the week.

Christmas is my favorite holiday, the decorations will be up by Thanksgiving, I have 6 trees throughout the house along with lighted wreathes, garland, Santa houses, a collection of Christmas tree toppers and tons of other stuff, I even change lampshades, valances, pillows, and bathroom décor. I don't take it down till the second week of January but leave all the burgundy accents up until April. It's depressing when it all comes down because everything looks so bland without the vibrant Christmas colors. Last year I hired a neighbor for $13.00 an hour and she helped me get it all up. I had pictures from the year before, so she had a plan to work from. This worked so well I felt it was money well spent, so I am doing the same this year. In fact I think I might hire her to help me take some of it down.

I usually LOVE Halloween, but this year felt a bit blah for me. I think cuz of all the competitions for it. Best costume & decorations at work, home, school, puppy classes, even Sand Mountain got a bit too competitive for us this year. I do those things for the fun of it for me and my little family, not because I want to one up people.

Gotta say I'm reaaally excited for Christmas this year. Forget 30 days of holiday cheer- come Saturday morning I'm hunting for decorations and orniments, etc. This is our first year celebrating it as our own little family, so I'm excited to go all out. The dogs will even have their own tree. :D

My dogs just pee on the big tree! They should have a smilie of a dog peeing on a tree! LOL I love decorating for Christmas though. The day after thanksgiving, usually have it off, so I do it then, or over that weekend. I don't have a ton of stuff, but I love putting up twinkle lights in the house. I love colored lights and I love my random tree with so many decorations. Nothing and everything is pretty in my house. Its tacky, but it's fun and I love it! Love it at night with just the tree on in the living room watching tv.

Thanksgiving is for family !!

While we are on the subject of Holidays !

The retail industry has absolutely ruined Thanksgiving for us. Both my DH & DD work at the same place in the mall and it sucks. Every year its a competition to see what company can out do, out whit and open the earliest with their stupid Door Busters and Thanksgiving day/after sales. Our family dinner has went for 5:30 each year to 3pm now and it may even be earlier this year depending on what time they finally decide to open. They wait until the last minuite to even tell the employees what time they will be opening and when they need to be there. Last year we had to rush through dinner so that my DH could go to work at 5PM. He worked the entire night last year. From 5pm thurs to around 4PM the following day it was just so heart wrenching to see him be so over worked and unappreciated. I thought for sure he was going to have a heart attach. My daughter also had to work later that night on Thanksgiving day.

This s**t has been going on for years and I just absolutely hate it. From the beginning of Oct until about two weeks after Christmas my DH is on overload with resets, goals to reach, product to be set up meanwhile having unplanned visits from district managers breathing down his back. Criticizing and nit picking about every little detail.

Such an would wind of craziness and all for what ? So that little Suzy can have on more doll and Johnny can get on more video game. . . . Bah Humbug !!!

Its a good thing that I love Halloween so much. It makes up for the rest of the crappy Holidays.

The End of Rant . . LOL

I love all holidays. And yes, holidays really do get me through the year...I look forward to October-December .all . year . long !. When February (lots of family birthdays, including mine) is over, a heavy seasonal depression sets in. I hate summer, so boring.

My mom stopped putting up a tree when I was 15....which made me really sad. And since living with my BF we haven't had one either. This year, my friend is giving me hers since she's getting a new one. So this will be our first tree together!!!!! I'm putting it up NEXT WEEK!! and I have no shame! Lol. I know most people put it up right before or after Thanksgiving but I just can't wait. I'm so happy. The YT card exchange also really makes me happy...I love holidays because they give me an excuse to decorate A.K.A. glitter-bomb our apartment.

This yr halloween was good. We dressed up and partied a lot. Did pumpkins and haunted trails. Today I made my employees play the 'Halloween Party' station on Pandora. :) It played Thriller, Monster Mash, other typical halloween spooky songs. Anyone who knows me knows I am all about holidays. I hope that never changes as I get older and I hope my kids love holidays too.

I agree Im in retail also

celstu1 10-31-2013 10:43 AM

Retail sucks! :( I'm sorry you & your DH, and now your daughter, have to go through that. I used to like working retail during the holidays and did it as a part time job for fun and be more busy, and the extra cash. I like Black Friday shopping, but not at 5pm on thanksgiving either. I liked it when they opened at 5am, my Dad & I would get up in the pitch black, dress super warm and go out, get coffee and breakfast and then go shopping for the day, we'd have so much fun. But this 'getting earlier & earlier' trend is crazy.
Christmas commercials on tv, today Rite Aid was taking down and discounting their Halloween stuff and putting up Christmas stuff. The guys doing it said it all had to be done by tomorrow! Nov 1?? WHAT?? That' so crazy to me! BUTTTTT... if people stopped buying now, stopped shopping at 5pm on thanksgiving, etc.. then the industry would HAVE to change. It's consumer driven also, remember!

Christmas: Im glad that you and you FB will be getting your first tree together. I still have ours from 27 yrs ago from our first Christmas in our own apartment together. I was just a little 2.5 ft tree with a strand of light on it, not much but is was ours. When my daughter was 3 she asked santa clause for her own Christmas tree and we used that one. We had it all set up for her to wake up to on Christmas morning. She was so excited and now she is taking it for her and her BF to use for their first Christmas together in their house.

Once I threated to not put up the tree last year and my DH said that I will ruin Christmas so he went down and got it and put it together and than said "there I did my part" which is more than what he usefully does.

Halloween: This will be the first time in 28 yrs that my DH is going with me to celebrate Halloween !! He don't much care for my odd scene of humor that I put into my costumes but oh will. He is going as Michel Myers so yesterday I found a ring tone for his phone of the Halloween theme song. Im going to be calling his phone all night on Sat. just to freak people out.

Yes this is true . . But Thanksgiving should be about Family !!!

Thanksgiving use to be one of the Holidays where companies were all about the family and not about the money. How daring would it be for someone, anyone to have the balls to say NOPE not going to follow the Hype not anymore and to announce that they are putting their employees and their families ahead of all else. How nice would that be. FB has a pledge going around asking people to stay home and be with their families and NOT go shopping on Thanksgiving !

I don't shop at all during the Thanksgiving weekend, it's stupid really since you can find most everything close to the same price later on. Standing on line for hours waiting for the stores to open and then on line to pay is not worth saving a few bucks. Now I hear that the mall will be open during the day on Thanksgiving and so is Wallmart but they put tape around they so called big bargins.

I wonder if Hobby Lobby will be open for all the doorbuster crap. I give that store a lot of credit for not even opening on Sundays, they are about family values and I don't think their sales suffer a bit. My SIL was in retail and she lived in Chicago she could never come home for Christmas because everyone at the store had to be there at at 7 am the day after to handle all the returns. I can see why those with family in retail would feel very differently about the holidays.

Oh honey. Sorry your not a fan. This is my day! My favorite day. I go all out. I decorate inside and out. Even my bathroom is all done up. My friends and I hand make our costumes. I do get tired of going to costume parties and the naughty ______ fill in blank always wins. So we started out doing our own parties. A blast. We do not care if you come as a gypsy every year. We just want you to come and have a great time.

My lil friend 10-31-2013 08:24 PM

The closest thing I get to decorating for Halloween is a carved pumpkin or two. Other than that y decorations are for fall. Mina and Kenzie dressed up in a pirate wench and snow white costumes tonight and helped pass out candy. We will be having a cookout for the ENTIRE family before Thanksgiving, just to have a gathering before everyone has to jump into the insanity of the holidays. Thanksgiving day will be about which ever kids can make it here,a good meal and decorating the tree. I leave the winter holiday garlands up until almost spring. Santa still visits for the kids that still live with us and the pups,,,well mostly because I enjoy it.
This year I am a bit overwhelmed with the idea of gifting. Usually I start in June and am done by Thanksgiving day,,not this year.
