Anyone watching 'The Paradise' on PBS Masterpiece?
 
This new series sooo reminds me of 'Mr. Selfridges' which I just love! It has been suggested that this series was created to hold us over until the new season of DA. I love these period pieces...the clothing, the social classes, etc. I probably was a scullery maid in a past life! LOL!! :D

Hee hee!!! :D And the next series is just about to begin here....pretty, isn't it?!!!? :D

Oh, and my dad was a lawyer before he retired - when he did his family tree - he discovered that his great great grandmother WAS a scullery maid.....:D (that's probably who I get my cleaning fetish from....:eek: :D) Sally x

I don't think "The Paradise" is starting here until this or next week. I've got the series set to record. I hope it's better than Selfridge - just couldn't stick with that one. That actor playing Selfridge was too OT and it was boring to me for some reason.

I watched "Father Brown" the other night and so enjoyed the English-ness of it, though it had no suspense or anything. Was slow-paced and reminded me of the Christie Marple novels with all those little village touches and characters. Fun show and Brown really grows on you.

Really? I loved Jeremy Piven when he was in Entourage, so I was really excited to see him as Selfridge. Not sure if Paradise is better, as I felt it was the exact same story with different actors, but that's just my humble opinion. You'll have to let me know what you think.

I will check out Father Brown. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

HAHAHA!! Well I may have to rethink my scullery maid idea as I have no passion for cleaning!! I've always wanted to do a family tree, just not sure how or where to start. My only claim to fame is a distant relative to the Kennedys.

Hubby and I love all the British shows....DA, Wentworth, Frankie, Graham Norton, etc. I have a friend who lives in Derby...she breeds Ragdolls and we always talk about the shows when we Skype...I just love her accent!! :D

Paradise is much better than Selfridge...better quality acting...and Moray (Elliot) is hotter than Selfridge (Piven) :D

I had a hard time getting into Father Brown. But then I'm not a fan of mysteries at all...I could tolerate the handful of Marple that Geraldine McEwan was in, as she's one of my all time favourite actresses. I absolutely loved her in Mulberry!

Piven was the Selfridge actor? He seemed as if he were on Broadway the 2 or 3 episodes of it I watched, as if he were trying to light up and project to the last row of the theater or something in so many of his scenes. Just didn't see any subtleties in his technique but maybe it was just my mood at the time. I wondered myself why Selfridges just didn't ever keep me interested. It's so odd why we delight over some things and others just leave us cold. Like that Father Brown - really a nothing of a show but it was cozy, a neat period piece, bit of a peek into a tiny English village and at motivations for impulsive behavior and the sad outcome when it's destructive. Our PBS station has really done us proud these last three seasons. I loved the Sherlock Holmes Cumberbatch did. What writing(in most of them), directing, editing! BC just fascinates me as an actor.

This past Sunday was our first episode. Hope you can catch it, but if not, I'm sure you will be able to follow the story.

Jeanie, you made me laugh!! Yes, he was a yeller (sp?:)) in both Entourage and Selfridge, and he also played on Broadway! I totally agree with you in what works for some doesn't always work for others. I hope I can find the Fr. Brown series as your lovely description has really piqued my interest! :)

Looks like I somehow missed the Series Premier as all I have scheduled is a Rerun of it 10/13, called "The Paradise" and it first ran 10/6! Thought I had it scheduled to record this past Sunday but it's not on my list of recorded shows! Anyway, got the replay scheduled and the rest of the series on my Record schedule now individually.

Oh, wait, just saw it did record but it's listed under Masterpiece Classic. I have everything called "Masterpiece" on Autorecord so I get it all, just didn't know Paradise was under that. Going to watch it once the second one has recorded. If it's good, it's more fun to just go on and watch two in a row. Oh, I hope it's good.

Father Brown is quaint but if you're an anglophile, you'll probably love it. The characters and that village are just so darn English, you can't help but enjoy if you love the older English culture. Scones & tea & village fetes outside the little church, chapel bells, gossip-y older ladies in print dresses & hats, beautiful old cars, little cottages, colorful gardens, etc.
