Kinda need advice on a sensitive topic. We'll be doggysitting a friend's poodle for a couple of days. It's the second time. Last year when we had Lui with us, I was kind of concerned because he felt very skinny. Rufus was heavier than Lui. I don't know if it's a poodle thing. Today she'll bring him to our house. My question is: If Lui still feel skinny, what can I do to figure out if he's just skinny or if he needs more food. My friend feeds him some kind of raw food and last time his poop was very runny. Is this because of the raw? My following question: How can I tell my friend that I'm concerned about Lui's weight? It is a very sensitive topic. I really appreciate any kind of help |
I have read in other forums that thinness can be a challenge on raw, especially with the prey model raw. We know a pug who eats raw. At first we were really impressed how great he looked because most other pugs we know are overweight. Now he looks scary thin. Runny poop can be caused by so many things, but is not normal on a raw diet. If he has problems while staying with you, that might be a good place to start with your friend. If Lui's ribcage is really prominent, I would just point it out to your friend in a matter of fact way. Suggest a vet check the runny poop, and the vet will automatically assess the dog's weight. |
If I had a concern, I would definitely voice it - gently and in a non-accusing manner. Perhaps when your friend comes to pick up Lui you can make some casual observations about "feeling his ribs" or noticing that he has runny poo. You would be doing an injustice to both little Lui and your friend if you didn't. Good luck! |
If you have concerns just say so, also keep in mind too that some dogs have a very high energy level and can appear as if they are not getting enough nutrition when they are. Its just that they burn more energy than another dog that just lays around the house and don't get the same amount of exercise. (mine for instance) They are on a three meal a day diet but because they are very lazy and a bit over weight. A Poodle who is typical a very high strung dog would probably get lot of exercise burning off the pounds. Here is a weigh chart for dogs to give you an idea of the proper body type for a canine. I agree... your concerns can be said -- just think HOW you are going to say it. Maybe just comment on one thing, like the poo or the weight. If you address too many issues she may feel attacked or be over whelmed. good luck |
Thank you all for the advice and links with information. I'll keep this in mind. I'll keep you all up to date. |
And I agree that it's better to tell her than to keep it to myself. If the situation was reversed, I'd like her to tell me. |
Lui is here and he looks good :) The food he has is different than last time too.. I still have to check his poop but everything else looks good. The dogs still have to get used to him, but it's going :) I'll post pics soon |
Thats great . . !! Hope you dog sitting experience goes better than my last one . . it was torture !! |
Why? What happened? And thank you, btw :) |
Good luck. I agree with the others. If you bring it up the right way, it can be done. I'd definitely say something! |

Its a good read and you'll get a chuckle out of it like most did . . but I didn't think it was very funny at the time. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/off...y-sitting.html |
Oow yeah, I remember that story :) I hope it goes well with Lui here. We'll have him this whole week. |
Good LUck !! :D |
I'm glad he's looking better. Can't wait to see pictures! |
1 Attachment(s) This is a quick picture I took of Lui. I'll try to take more of him and his looks. It isn't very easy because he looses concentration really fast.. |
I took the dogs out to potty and was pleased to see that Lui's poop is solid :) We'll now enjoy his stay with us without being worried :) One thing we have to work on is the way he walks on the leash (it's horrible!!) and he doesn't listen much. Small thing we'll have to work on. |

Thank you Kristin :) |
All good news, sometimes it help to be on Poop Patrol. There is so much that we can tell about our babies just by a little turd. :D |
I think some poodles are just built very thin. I had 2 miniature poodles from the same litter, they lived together their whole lives, ate the same food (wet for dinner and free fed dry), and went out the same amount. One was very tall, long, and thin like a greyhound, you could always see her ribs a little. It was just how she was built and she was extremely active. She'd get the zoomies a lot and bounce in place. Her weight only became a problem towards the end when we were having a hard time getting her to eat. She lived to be 15 1/2. The other was built like a bulldog, short, stout, muscular/chubby. She wasn't nearly as active as the other poodle. She lived to be 14 1/2. |
Honestly I worry about my girl being too thin. All trips to the vet we get the a ok but I am familiar with body condition scoring and I feel like she is too bony and pointy. I realize that overweight pets have become an epidemic problem as well but little lilah is just a titch over four pounds and I feel like her hip bones jut out. She is on good food and has free choice, she is very active (still a pup and all) and gets treats and fatty chews like pig ears etc her poos are good but my eye is out keeping close tabs on her. I am hoping she will fill out a little more as her puppy growth slows. |
