I have lived in Georgia all my life, but I still do not understand these people. The weather forecast is for temps in the 20's in the morning with "wintery mix" predicted. All the schools have already announced closings and day shifters are staying overnight at the hospital where I work in case they can't get back in the morning. Wintery mix. Not blizzard. :snowflake:

Where I grew up in Minnesota the rule was the superintendent would call school off when he couldn't see the flag pole outside his window because of snow..we hated it...the flag pole was like a foot away from the window and very rarely was it so bad he couldn't see it :)

A wintery mix is a blizzard to the people in the South. I also usually involves ICE. We dont really get fluffy snow that much in the South,just LOTS of ice. so think rain and ice.

I lived/still work in Buffalo NY for my whole life, near Canada and Niagara Falls, walking distance....We've had blizzards where we had to go upstairs to get out the attic window to get out of the house cuz the snow was too high....that's pretty much when they close anything here!!! lol

OMG lynzy!!! Who are the "crazy ones", as another poster called us??? As I would be climbing out the attic window because the snow was essentially burying the entire house, THIS "crazy Southerner" would be realizing there was NOTHING there that was THAT important to me that I was staying!!!!

In case they are wrong and the wintry mix is plain black ice or 6" of snow, they are prepared. We had that in our forecast a while back and got lots of sleet, then snow for a day and nobody was prepared, lots of wrecks as everyone was out and about, people couldn't get anywhere or get kids and stuff. Schools let out early but parents were hours getting to them so now they just seem to try to avoid all of that and close.

I'm like Yorkiemom1, I like living where it's warmer. The livin' in easy in the South and Southwest and even when it is broiling in the summer, we just go from one air-conditioned place to another in air-conditioned cars and it's all good because it doesn't shut things down, you can still go shopping, take the dogs out in the shade, run errands and go everywhere. Would not want to work out in that hot sun all day but if you don't have that kind of job, the summers are made up for by mostly reasonable weather the rest of the year.

My sister's friend who lives in Canada says it is so cold there in the winter, they can't bury people who die in the middle of winter until the Spring thaw. I had never heard anything like that and still wonder if it is true.

We have a lot or mountainous areas that do get snow when we don't down in the valley. It just cracks me up that they close schools the day before without even seeing what it is gonna do. I am a crazy southerner, born and bred less than 100miles from where I live now. No one can drive on ice and we don't have salt trucks here, so I understand people staying over at work...in fact, it is encouraged. I just remember as a kid that school closings werent announced until about 6am. Now they close school if it rains too hard, snow flurries are predicted or if the temp drops to 20. I just find it amusing.

Its still true Jeanie...when people up here pass away if the ground is frozen we will have a burial memorial in the spring.

Yes it is true and same as here in Buffalo, my Grampa died in December and it was a bad winter so they had us all go in to the mausoleum instead of graveside and we had to leave Gramps there, wish I didn't go....they buried him when they could.

lmao...you are so funny! I made a ton of money during that storm....serving Coffee that I was giving for free to stranded folks on the thruway which was close by...I did however; lose a boot in that darn storm! Honestly, we've had some doozy storms and are often the but of jokes on latenight shows but we've had a few great winters the last few years and last year only one real bout of snow, I never broke out my gloves last year! This year it seems were back to normal...snow, cold, snow, cold....

Oh yes........it is true!! My fathers family was all from Wisconsin, and several of the brothers went back to the family cemetary when they died....but they couldnt be returned until late spring / summer, because they had to wait for the ground to thaw before they could dig the graves! Unbelieveable!!! Our temp today is forcasted to be 76*......it is 64* right now.....NICE!!

I guess technically, being from Kentucky, I am kind of southern, but not like my friends in North and South Carolina that drink sweet tea and say y'all. :D

Middle Tennessee drivers tend to lose their minds when it does nothing more than rain. When the temperature drops near freezing? Fuhgeddaboutit! The grocery stores empty and things lock down like Armageddon is coming. So for me, it's not the road conditions that bother me. It's the maniacs out on the roads that do! They just don't seem to grasp the concept of slow down and don't slam on the brakes when it's wet/slick.

Schools in Virginia close whenever snow is predicted. I loved it as a kid. :)

And North Georgia...I'm sure the ER will be busy today with people running off the road; And heaven forbid you need milk or bread in the next 2 days. I'm sure the stores have been emptied!
I feel sorry for the parents who need to work but are now stuck at home watching their children while it sprinkles rain and the temp is above freezing (just barely, but still above) One of my coworkers noticed this morning that none of the private schools were on the list of closings, just the public ones. Guess you get what you pay for...

Schools up here were like that for awhile too! Which is weird because a foot of snow here hardly stops anything. Work is still open, stores open as normal, roads are plowed a dozen times by 6am, it's business as usual with 1 foot snow storms. Last year schools would announce closings when the weathermen predicted snow as well, since we only got 1 storm in late Oct last year and then did not get a drop of snow at all the rest of winter, it was really weird they were doing that. The only thing I could think of is, they did not use their allotted snow days so they had to get some days off so the kids didn't get out of school in May. This year though, they are being different and last week we got about 4 inches of snow and school was open. I can't say we are getting much snow this year though either. we've had only 2 storms that brought snow, one about 7 inches and one about 4 inches, and thats it. There is about a 3 inch layer left on the lawns now and with temps being in the negatives, its not going anywhere!

I waited to go into work until the crazies were in. The thermometer says 33F. I just went to load up the car, walked out on the front porch, and promptly landed on my keester on the 1/4 inch of ice on the steps.

Guess I get to stay home a little longer and play with Sam! If I didn't have to run payroll today, I'd be back in my pajamas! Just not worth it to take a 2 year old out on icy streets.

Good thing it's supposed to go up around 40F this afternoon. I still have to make the 3 hour round trip to get my car, and get the oldest to church for a lock-in tonight.

so true.. I am from Bristol the Virginia side. It is where Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina meet.... love the mountain roads when it snows. School could be closed a week because they can't get the school buses up and down the mountain roads safety

Yeah, I take back some of the stuff I said (not all...they still close schools when they shouldn't), but I just let Huey out on the deck and just about busted my keister, too. The drizzly rain has turned to that wintery mix that was predicted and even though the temp is still 33, it is getting icy.

I did the same thing this morning going out my back door:eek: Thank goodness the bank where I work decided to close (3rd time in the 19 years I have worked there) I can handle snow and driving in it...Ice is scary and I don't even attempt it.

90% of our county is back mountain roads..our schools have no choice but to close in bad weather.

Umm yea I have only seen snow on TV, movies and pictures never in person haha

Hmm yes... I was suppose to go to my Tenn house when it snowed last year but something came up and I could not make it.... Then I was suppose to go Philly next month but my friend was in a car wreck so now we are going in July.

I really do not think I would be able to handle it because even when it gets our version of cold in Fl I have a very hard time walking from all the pins and screws in my legs and arthritis.

yeah I can't imagine that pain... many years ago I fell down cement stairs and the skin on my shin was gone, you could see the bone and feel the chips on it down my shin. Well to this day when its this cold out, it aches like it's bruised, and sometimes if I stand up for too long it throbs. Its so weird! I don't have a scar or mark on me either. I don't scar at all. People think its so odd when I tell them what happened and what my leg looked like for a couple years and now there is nothing there at all!

Reporting in from North Fulton County (yes the same couny as Atlanta). We have rain, no ice just rain.

I never get a snow day since I work from home and my commute is walking across the hall upstairs (if I have ice on m commute there is a huge problem).

Being from Michigan and living in Georgia for the last 15 years I have learned when it snows or we have ice stay home. The people are not prepared for the driving, we do not have equipment to remove the ice and besides any place I need to go is probably closed.

I hate the ice, snow I can handle. It must be really bad on the roads. We subscribe to text alerts for weather and news from a news station out of Knoxville Tn. There was a terrible accident with some first responders, a firetruck turned over and down an embankment onto a Tn State Trooper car. The trooper died from his injuries.

I am thankful that officials called off school last night as a precaution...this could have been a bus full of school children.:( Better safe than sorry IMO

The kids got out 2 hours early today because it's "suppose" to snow.....so far nothing.

When I was a senior in high school we got off for 2 weeks. We actually did have a big snowstorm. I loved sleeping in everyday and didn't have to make up the days since I was graduating:D
