I'm fed up with celebrations....!!! I've had too much turkey....too many roasties....far too much Christmas pudding and mince pies.... I don't even like Christmas pud and mince pies - but I have to eat them 'cos it's the Season and because they're there.... I've had to celebrate with champagne when I'd far rather have a glass of red vino....and as for Bucks Fizz - yuck yuck yuck!!! And we've still got New Year to go..... Can't wait for a good old fried egg sandwich...:D x |
And Bah Humbug to you, too! LOL, Sally, me thinks you've had one too many get-togethers and company lately! What with all the rushing around, waiting in line, checking off interminable lists and wrapping, decorating, cooking, picking up last minute things and endless traffic and people everywhere you turn, you get together with a lot of other people who've just been through much the same thing, saying the same phrases over and over, too much eating, snacking, drinking, everyone's tired but needs to be festive - it does get a tad wearing, doesn't it? Well, a few more days, one last party, some football watching gatherings and that's it! By January 2, 2013, we can all start to amp down again. |
You can come to my house for New Years Day . . . . Fried egg sandwiches (yum) for everyone ! |
You can't be calling an end to celebrations until you've popped the bubbly on New Year's Eve! I do however sympathize with you having to choke down mince pies....sorry I just can't do it! Thankfully, my mum makes jam tarts & lemon curd tarts as well as mince pies :) |

New Years is black eye peas and hog jowl here in good ole Arkansas. For Christmas dinner I made egg rolls, crab wontons, and fried rice as we too are sick of ham and turkey. And Sally, what the heck is Bucks Fizz???!! |

Tonight's dinner We are just about to tuck in to a fish supper and a sausage supper. Poor Alfie is being limited to kibble only for the next weeks to see if it helps stop his itching. |

Yes, it's half + half very dry champagne and freshly squeezed orange juice  It sounds ok-ish, but is actually quite thick and sickly....trouble is, wherever you go to 'celebrate', you're offered a glass as you go in, and I feel quite rude not accepting it..... I wonder how many houseplants will keel over and die at houses I've visited, over the next couple of weeks..... :D x |

And I can not even stand the sight or smell of MICE meat pies as I call them. |

Mice meat pies and fruit cakes should be banned... If I ever become President that will be one of the first laws I put into effect!!! |

I can eat a slice of fruit cake but no mince meat for me |
panettone now that is a yummy Christmas treat |
I love a bit of mince meat tarts and fruit cake for sure. |
My Daddy always loved a big piece of mince pie and a cup of coffee at Christmas. I guess I got my love of mince from him. Fruitcake - my older sister taught me to love that. She would always serve the special fruitcake chilled, sliced razor thin and with the thickest, coldest egg nog. She always served the Cookbook Bakeries Ye Olde English Fruit Cake and it was so rich and yummy and not so full of nuts as so many are today. It had more of the candied fruits than anything, only a few nuts and was terribly moist. The actual cake part was really good, too. I was so sad when that company went out of business and stopped making that fruitcake. But then the Collin Street Bakery in Waco, Texas kind of stepped in and took over all the fruitcake market down here. We usually drive down to Waco and buy ours each year. Never been in their bakery that it wasn't full of customers! |
Mince meat is MICE meat...? Oh my gosh, that seems kinda disturbing for some reason! |
Hmm safe to say nobody on here is voting for me to be president then lol |

What surprised me was to find that a lot of British wedding cakes were and still are fruitcake, even William and Kate's just recently. |

Oh well if I was there you could not have Apple pie... I would eat the whole thing well except for the crust :p |
Umm what is a PODDLE of apples???? 2 lbs raisins 3 lbs currants 1½ lbs lean beef 3 lbs beef suet 2 lbs moist sugar 2 oz citron 2 oz candied lemon peel 2 oz candied orange peel 1 small nutmeg 1 pottle of apples the rind of two lemons, the juice of one 1/2 pint brandy Stone and cut the raisins once or twice across, but do not chop them; wash, dry and pick the currants free from stalks and grit, and mince the beef and suet, taking care the latter is chopped very fine; slice the citron and candied peel, grate the nutmeg, and pare, core and mince the apples; mince the lemon peel, strain the juice and when all the ingredients are thus prepared, mix them well together, adding the brandy when the other things are well blended; press the whole into a jar, carefully exclude the air, and the mincemeat will be ready for use in a fortnight. |

My mom used to make fruitcake when I was a kid. When I got old enough and brave enough to say I hated it (my brothers did too) she said she did too and stopped making it, thank goodness! I haven't had it in like 25 years! (maybe longer!) and Mincemeat, well Ive NEVER had that, and probably would NEVER eat that. My MIL brings it over every Thanksgiving, not homemade, store bought and its nasty looking, smelling and no one eats it but her. I am sick of Chinese food! I need to get through tonight, one more night of Chinese food! My little brother has been staying with us for 2.5 weeks and Chinese is his favorite. I eat it maybe 3x a year.... but he eats it 3x a week easily. We've had a lot of it over the last 2 weeks since he's going to be deploying to New Delhi for 3 years he wanted to 'stock up' on it! If I didn't see it again until next New Years, I'd be ok with that! LOL |
