taken aback = surprised etc ("I was taken aback by the audience's reaction")
taken back = the act of returning ("I was taken back to the entrance")
I have a related one -- "revert back." It's redundant. My favorite speakers and writers make this mistake.

I have to admit, certain verbs are tough for me. Drink, hang, lay vs lie.

Somewhere in my files I have a great quote from a scholarly woman comparing grammar to a fine-tuned piano. The author said she let her ears serve as her grammar guide rather than worrying so much about the rules.

This is how I have learned! I think my spelling/grammar has been greatly influenced by reading. I have loved to read since I learned how to read. I have been devouring books my whole life. In English class, I wasn't so great at the activities where I had to "underline the preposition" or whatever. I couldn't keep track of the names and the rules. I just know that in literature, over and over, it is written this way, spelled this way, and this punctuation is used. That just sticks in my brain. Without actually thinking too hard about it, I just know when it feels right.

I see sale and sell get mixed up a lot. I am "usually" pretty good at grammer but I get mixed up in the teenage slang with texting and what not (GE puppy talk too :p) so I'm guilty on many counts listed here. :eek:

I was at the quilt shop yesterday and they had a embroidery sample hanging that said "butterfly's in spring" and had 4 or 5 butterflies flitting around. I turned to my daughter and double checked to make sure I wasn't wrong, but it was supposed to be "butterflies in spring".


My worst are their, there, they're and two, to, too.

And it's an IDEA, not an IDEAL. You do not get a great ideal.


And there's the whole "I" vs "ME" in a sentence. My son's teacher told him is is always "I". She argued with me. (or should I say she argued with I?)

That one makes me CRAZY!!! My SIL uses it all the time, she is so sweet and would be hurt if I said something but Oh Mylanta its hard.
