Mascara or False Eyelashes?
 

Every time I wear mascara I end up looking like a raccoon. Does anyone else have this problem and have you found a mascara that doesn't smudge and smear?

I am thinking of trying false eyelashes, although I have never worn them before and know nothing about them. I have a few questions -
How much do they cost?
How easy are they to put on and take off?
How long do they stay on?
How long do they last?

Information and advice is appreciated.

Are you talking about "permanent" false eyelashes that are done at a beauty shop, or over the counter lashes you glue on? The newest thing is the permanent eyelashes, and I notice them all the time. That's the problem, you shouldn't really notice the eyelashes, and they look too long and thick on some people especially when they close their eyes. I think this is an awful trend. I say enhance, not overpower. (Lol, I feel the same way about boob jobs) Another problem with the permanent eyelashes is they tend to ruin your own eyelashes, so you have to continue to wear them or wait till your own lashes grown in again. The good thing is they last for about 6 weeks. Even some of the girls on “Survivor” are wearing them.

I’ve never tried false eyelashes, so I can’t speak from experience, but I’ve read that the individual ones you glue on look the most natural, you just glue little clumps on at a time where you need it. Most women do wear mascara with these types of lashes though. Just make sure you don’t go too long. There are some really great mascara’s that stay put, you have to find something that works with your skin. If your skin is oily, you need to find one that washes off with soap and water, not removed with oil pads. Usually, waterproof mascaras work well.

I've tried lots of different and more expensive mascaras, but currently love Mabeline "Stiletto" waterproof (comes in 2 versions), and never get racoon eyes. It stays in place until I use non-oily makeup remover to get it off.

I am also very happy with a lash growing serum. I am currently using Latise which is expensive and by prescription, though I've had good results with some cheaper ones from Amazon. I'll be going back to cheaper ones after the Latise runs out. My lashes are definitely longer and thicker, and I've cut down from daily application to 2-3 times a week because my lashes touch my sunglasses. I almost need to trim them.

I think the glue on false lashes are yucky, irritating and damage your own lashes.

This is what I use and I have really oily skin and this stuff does not give me racoon eyes! I have used some of the most expenmsive ones, and always come back to Maybeline! I would love to use Latise...but when I read it can permanently change the color of your eyes, I quickly trashed that idea! The Maybeline does everything I want and need! I would love to get my eyebrows permanently tatooed on.....but I dont want to look like "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane"....and I dont like needles...."If it hurts, dont do it"!!

I hear ya with the tatoo idea. I inquired recently about doing eyeliner and a consult about brows. I'm not as worried about the pain as I am about getting something made permanent if I don't love the style. Maybe the liner and brow style I presently wear is not the best for my face.

My brows only need a little fill in the mid-line, so I ordered a product called Wunderbrow, a gel that lasts a couple days. Can't wait to try it. Sounds better than tatoo. I've also heard of people using henna-temporary tatoo on brows.

I have brown eyes, and no prob with Latise changing color. Warnings are for blue or hazel eyes, and my Dr. said it is extremely rare even with light eyes. I'm just don't like the price, although once lashes get growing you don't need to use it every day. Still, I will switch to one of the high rated cheaper products for maintaining.

I have green eyes and it really scared me with the Latise! I use something called Godefroy Instant Eyebrow Tint. My mother used this stuff for YEARS....it was around in WWII, and women used it for eyelashes as well as eyebrows....way back then, it only came in black, I think...It comes in several colors now (Jet Black, Natural Black, Dark Brown, Medium Brown, Light Brown) I am a red head...well used to be, grey now....b ut the light brown is great for my skin tone.....this stuff lasts 6 weeks...it is super....you might try it.....work with how long you leave it on, to get the perfect shade of color so you dont look like a painted up something or other....it is real natural looking and gives enough color to highlight your eyebrows!

I would say mascara over false. To me, the mascara is the most important part of your make up. I have a hard time finding one that works for me too, so I feel your pain. My friends will say a brand is awesome and then I try it, it's nothing spectacular. At least to me. Let me know if you find one!

Seems like a few Mabeline Stiletto votes. I'll have to try it. Don't think I've tried the stiletto. Which one is the one in the pink tube with green cap? It's been around forever??

I've used both false eyelashes & the individually applied ones and the latter last about 3 - 4 days if you are very careful how you clean around the lashline so you can't let the shower-water on your face or off they come. It's very difficult to put them on at first but I used a toothpick to help guide the base to where you want it to go for both the fake lash and tweezer and toothpick for the individual lashes. If you can't get the base right up against your own lashline, remove & start over, as those that are off even a 1/2 millimeter are so obvious. I think the latter look more realistic if you pick the right color and texture lash to match your own. Those individual lashes put on in the best salons look fabulous if done by the best beautician/cosmetologist who knows how to choose/match the fakes w/your own, doesn't go too long and doesn't overdo, use too much adhesive/bond, etc. Lately though you see a heavier, faker look done on purpose with some of the more tall, very thin, more fashionable girls!

Why do people think this looks good?

I'm a HUGE makeup junkie and have been wearing it since I was nine (musical theater) and played around with both high end and drugstore mascaras. Definitely always use a lash curler lol its my must-have beauty tool.

My favorite drugstore ones are Maybelline The Falsies (original, not flared)
Covergirl lashblast (orange tube) and as for high end, I love Benefit They're Real mascara and Diorshow.

I've worn about a jillion sets of false lashes and I wouldn't recommend it for every day use, but they are great for special occasions! They can be pretty frustrating to apply for a newbie. If you do get then, invest in Duo lash adhesive, never use the little bottle it sometimes comes with.
Here's how I apply my fakes:

Peel off one strip of lashes and hold with tweezers. Trim to the length of your eye if needed.
Apply a thin strip of lash glue and give it a few seconds for the glue to get tacky.
Use the tweezers to apply as close to your upper lash line as possible.
Hold still!!!! ;)
Apply mascara so the falsies blend in with your real lashes.

That's what I'm seeing so much in Dallas lately! That fake look with the eyelashes. They're really obviously trying to look overdone just like that. Otherwise, their makeup and hair, nails, clothing, accessories are fine - just that lash thing to the brows almost. And it wasn't two-three? years back, they were all so pale and understated, even to wearing almost no mascara, you could barely see their faces except for red lips ear to ear!

I like one by Avon called Super Shock Max. I have really thin eyelashes and I use this in the black. I do three to four coats on each eye. I have never had trouble with it smudging or anything.

Now, I will be honest. I have been thinking about the eyelashes at the beauty shop. It's expensive up front and you have to go for fillers quite often. But my friend has them and hers are gorgeous! She never uses mascara now! I think it was about $250 up front and I think she said $30 for fillers??? I know she goes at least once a month for them. So way more expensive tan mascara!

Years ago, I used to have the 'semi-permanent individual false lashes' applied at a beauty salon (we lived by the sea, and I used to swim every day, so it was less messy!!). They were excellent, but actually quite high maintenance, and I was always a little bit afraid of rubbing my eyes - sometimes a few would be sticking out at a funny angle in the morning....:eek: :D

For me personally, as I've got older, I've found that having my eyelashes tinted is the best option....and I use the clear 'lash and brow' mascara to enhance them and give a soft sheen. Saves a lot of time, too! :) Sally x

If you wear false eye lashes you put mascara over them. So you need to really find a great mascara. I have very dry skin and get the same thing. I love Benifits Bad Gal mascara or Smashbox Full Exposure mascara. Use a eye lash curler before you put it on. Pump the curler 3 times. It will give you a nice curl. Also let it dry for a few seconds before putting on a second coat. Use a comb to separate your lashes. I don't wear a lot of makeup but mascara and blush is the two things I don't leave the house without!

I have used Lancome mascara for years. It is the best! To prevent smudging, always go with waterproof! :)

I have not used Lancome mascara, but I use the formula foundation for older skin, and it is fabulous....I love it.

I have tried many many mascaras in my life time and keep going back to maybelline...I used to use the one in the pink and green tube...great lash .....i think....as we get older our lashes thin out and I wasn't getting the fullness that I wanted...so tried something else,,,didn't work.,.,.For the past several years(since they came out with it) I have been using maybelline full and soft...unless i am rubbing my eye,,,I never get mascara smudges...and it doesn't make my lashes feel stiff. AND...it comes off with water...not a fan of waterproof...pulls out my lashes....I don't care for false lashes either...unless it's halloween! LOL...I think you can tell when someone is wearing them...JMO...keep searching...you will find a brand of mascara that will work for you

Been using this since I was in high school, 1966! Love it....and like you, I have used a lot of different kinds, and always go back to my "tried and true"!!

I love their products! Well worth the few extra dollars imho.

Thanks everyone for all the information. I have tried the Pink and Green, but for me it still leaves me with raccoon eyes. I will try a few of the other suggestions for mascara before I attempt the false eye lashes. They sound too difficult for the do it yourself ones and too expensive for the salon ones.

I am BIG fan of eyelashes.. I will normally wear them if I have something special going on. I love the big ones, thick and long is the way I go- The more dramatic the better! Some might say they are too big, but when I wear them I get a lot of complements... so I guess I am doing something right.

Eyelashes are really easy to put on… They have these ones I think they are KISS brand, they have a string on them to help you put them on- to line them up. They are really nice, however I don’t like them, the string annoys me- For someone getting use to putting them on, I think they would be perfect!

I sometimes during the week wear the smaller ones. Depends on my mood.

I use the green and pink waterproof mascra and I don't ever have any smudging.. I also use the Maybelline waterproof liquid eyeliner and I have to scrub my eyes with a baby wipe to get it off!! Never any raccoon eyes!!

I love it!! In fact I would love a pair of those eyelashes!! :D

I think it just depends on what you are looking for....

Makeup can be like an Art where you can go a little over the top...
make sure you blend blend and blend some more....

Or if you want to just do something light with a barely there effect.

I do a completely different type of look when I am going Out in the City, [which is just about every weekend..... ]
my regular weekend wear is much less dramatic....

I also Looooove doing a really GREAT Mask on a Sunday Evening!!

MAC has all kinds of lashes... they have a clear band on them so you can
get them close to your own lash line and they look more natural.
they have the More Dramatic as well as the every day looking ones.

I used the green tube Clinique mascara for years, it makes your lashes look fuller, loved it, then I wanted length so I went to the black tube, where one side is a comb and the other the brush. That one I like the look of my eyes with but it does smudge by mid afternoon. The green one never smudged. I'm very mascara picky and Clinique worked for years, but I think it's time for a change for me. I have a problem with drug store mascara drying up and flaking off into my eyes. Every kind Ive ever tried does this, drives me CRAZY! Ive heard Dior has good mascara too. I want to try it eventually.

Well, they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or in this case, the eyelash of the beholder. :p You have beautiful eyes, and I think the object of makeup is to draw attention to your best features, but not draw attention to the makeup. On the other hand, I think fashion and makeup is fun, and you should do what pleases you.
