Veggie Gardening anyone? 4 Attachment(s) I finally convince hubby to put a raised bed garden in this year and I'm having soooo much fun. lol We have a sprinkler system so I thought, "why not take advantage of it and put it to good use." My neighber and I are doing this, she has 2 of these gardens while I have one. So far we've managed to stay organic! Here is what I've harvested so far and cannot wait unti my big tomatoes come in. Got a ton of them on the vines but they all still green. Anyone else veggin gardening? |
4 Attachment(s) Hot Rod and Maggie May enjoying a freshly picked green bean. This was my first harvest of the garden. I put a dollar bill for size reference. Attachment 371900 This was today's harvest.Attachment 371901 I've gotten a bunch of zucchini and yellow squash between these harvests who as well as the japanese eggplants and beans. I'm having a ball with this. I've already told hubby that we're getting a second garden next year. :D |
Such a nice harvest, it is always so much better when it is fresh and especially when you have grown it yourself. I have only grown tomatoes this year, but have really been enjoying them. |
Thanks. I agree, the veggies taste so much better. I just cannot believe the price of tomatoes at the grocery store. The last tomato I paid for, about 2 weeks ago, was $1.74 for 1 tomato! It really burns me up to pay for tomatoes in the summer. I haven't been able to have a garden for about 2 years now but all I really ever did was tomatoes. My last attempt at zucchini and squash didn't work out so well so I'm really happy that they are doing much better this year. I've already given away a bunch of zucchini. I'm going to be giving my sister a lot of the grape tomatoes in the picture above. lol Once those start coming in, watch out, they really come in. lol |
I had a garden earlier in the season. But it was small and containers. Florida gardening is easier left to someone else, although I do enjoy it so much!! I always have a fresh herb garden, though! |
I have a Veggie garden, this is my first year of growin things in the ground and not in containers. Right now I hav e 4 tomato Planets, two Peppers, pole beans (were suppose to be bush beans) and a Basil. My tomato plants are loaded with green fruit right now, when they ripen I am going to be over run. I will only plant two next year for sure. I am already planning my fall crop of cabbage and greens. I am also going to plant some garlic to harvest next fall. I will post pictures once I get them off my phone. |
4 Attachment(s) Here are my most recent pictures. I am so proud, I grew everything but the Basil from seeds. |
Congratulations to both of you! I have always loved to garden. This is the first year that I haven't, but I plan to do it again when I have more time. It's a good thing I didn't do it this year. The weather has been abominable! I agree it tastes so much better and it's fun to go out and see how much things have grown everyday. I've done both the ground and raised gardening. I don't really have a favorite. Just love the good things that come from it.:) |
Boy, looking at that zucchini sure makes me hungry for some zucchini bread.....yummy! |
GOD BLESS FARMERS AND YOU PEOPLE THAN MANAGE TO SUCCEED IN DOING THIS!!! After spending hundreds of dollars last year, and LOOSING EVERYTHING to either bugs or the heat, I will pay $1.00/tomato....because the ones that all died, full of bug holes and black spots, averaged me about $6.00/tomato!!! Same thing with cucumbers, SQUASH THAT ALL HAD "END ROT", the turnips that had a particular grub worm, ZERO green beans, ....I did have a handful of okra, and I was successful with green onions....a FARMER I AM NOT!!! I know and accept my limitations!!!! |

I am hoping to put more tomato plants in next year if we get the second garden. I really would love to learn canning. My ex-in-laws had quite a garden and they would get enough to can that they only needed to shop for meats in the winter. They had just about every veggie including asparagus (yum!!!) and then they had peaches, apples, and melons of all kinds. I guess that's where I got the bug from. lol |

So far I like the raised bed because we have so many weeds in the back and I am really trying hard to keep the food plants free of any chemicals. I used marigolds to get the bees to pollinate and keep certain pests off plants. My neighbor read that basil plants thwart off certain bugs as well. Knock on wood the only real bug issue I've had were the june bugs (japanese beetles) but they were only here for a couple of weeks. They did do some damage to the beans though. |

My basil is growing like a weed and I've got it in my veggie garden also to keep the pests away. Last year I had oregano but that just took over the whole planter, lol. I still have some from last year. How did you set your herb garden up? |
