Foot in mouth.. The other day, my husband took me to the local humane society. It's my idea of a fun date because I get to see the animals, play with them, and socialize with them. I know, I'm really weird. But anywho, after we were done, we were walking out and I was talking with one of the workers who was telling me about their fund raisers they were doing and what not, just general animal chit-chat, when a women came in with the cat and was going on and on about how this is year five and she can' t keep, "The damn thing.." and making a fool out of herself. Meanwhile, this cat looked terrified in it's crate, I'm not a cat person but I felt for the poor thing. Well the humane society worker tried to explain to her that there's a $25 cash drop off fee, and if she didn't want to drop the cat off here, then she could give her to a kill shelter where she would most likely be euthanized, or surrender her to a local rescue. Well the women blew a gasket going on and on about how she doesn't have $25 dollars and that this cat has cost her enough. Well, I went outside with my husband to look at the horses and literally vented about how if you can't afford an animal, what's the point of getting one, and that you're their voice. How stupid people have become, and how much I like animals better than humans (I was in a real B*tchy mood). Well I said this right in front of a younger guy and his daughter. They just kind of looked at me and turned around. Well I noticed the woman came flying out of the office, with cat carrier in hand and met up with the young man and his daughter and they all got in the car together. Oops... |
Been there done that and really I agree with everything you said;) |
LoL ive done similar things its not hard to put your foot in your mouth when your upset |
haha ive done this as well.......but hey the truth hurts! you werent saying anything anyone wasnt thinking. lol |
well.. maybe they needed to hear the truth! |
Not foot in mouth, a REALITY check for those people. That poor kitty deserved better. Did they leave with the kitty ? |

Yup, the cat was still in the carrier. When the told her the fee was $25 cash, the women reached into her bra and pulled out cash, which to me is just...Trashy. No offense to anyone here that does that, but it is trashy, digging around in your bra to pull up a wad of singles. |
I agree that is trashy. At least she didnt leave with the cat |

ROFL ..... my money would of fell straight thru!!!!!!:D |
Well, at least now there's hope for that poor kitty . |
Why do people who don't love animals and aren't cat-and-dog-lovers get animals in the first place? If you aren't prepared to make that little living, breathing, thinking, loving creature a member of your family, why not just get a painting for the living room or a knick-knack for the den? That cat has no doubt come to love those three people, love his home & feel comfortable there, rely on those people as its very own family. Probably waits expectantly for them to come home, stroke his fur, toss a ball or cuddle with him. Now it gets stuck in a carrier & carted around like old clothes to cast off wherever one can find a dumping spot?!?! I wonder what the little cat is thinking as he's going through all of this? I wonder how much apprehension, sadness, fear & confusion is holding his little heart hostage? I wonder if he knows he's being tossed like an old shoe? When he finally gets successfully scrapped, if he's still alive, I wonder how long he will miss & worry about where his family has gone? So why do they get them in the first place? |
They needed to hear it... I just wish you had said it in front of her :p |

Sometimes we see this on YT as well. It's hard not to say something when we see bad pet parenting going on. I really want to cry for the dogs in those circumstances. |

Sometimes its good to speak up and give a truth reality when a dogs not being treated as they should and sometimes not. On here it just seems to tune people out and then they quit posting and they didnt learn anything. I am learning it is good to give the truth but in a way thats not threatening to them where they dont feel judged and will accept it as knowlege. It is hard sometimes though I know |
I'm glad they heard you and maybe it will make them think a little bit buy probably not....:( |

It just never ends. I think some folks are missing an empathy "gene". This was years ago now, maybe 5 or more, when Magic was still a pup. We were over at the local schoolyard in the early evening. We bumped into some folks who had a Berner. Young dog about one year old. Magic and he started to sniff and say hello. Then I watched the dog move. Oh my; very very obvious this dog had hip dysplasia. I asked his owners do you know that your dog has something wrong with his gait? They said oh yes, he has hip dysplasia. at least that is what the vet told us. I said; what a shame; what grade is it? They explained they didn't want to pay the money for an Xray, that their insurance didn't cover dysplasia, so they did nothing. I also said your dog is in pain, I can see that, and so can you, when you watch this dog move. I asked if they had talked with their breeder. They said don'tknow who that is as we "rescued" this dog from a previous owner. I said well get the papers, call the previous owner and find out. You never know the breeder might be more interested in helping a pup that she bred then you are! In retrospect my comment was awfully judgemental, and I certainly understand why they walked away from me. I'm not so sorry, it pains me to no end to see animals in pain; and with owners that don't give a hoot. I rather have those owners put the dog down, then to do nothing, but watch a dog move in pain over and over again. Nb: Just so you know, hip surgery for large breed dogs is Not awfully successful. I'm not sure why, but at this point in time it is so. |

I totally agree with you....I would rather see a person euthanize a pup than let it suffer because they cannot afford treatment. |

And, I know that people nowadays don't agree with me about this but the same goes here on YT. I honestly don't see the difference. It used to be ok to say things but the tide has turned. My answer is going to be to walk because I refuse to pat someone on the back for allowing an animal to suffer. I know people say there is a nice way, but quite frankly if you honestly tell someone in ANY manner that they are neglecting their dog, they are going to get upset. |

I posted a story here years ago about a baby shower I went to and saw 2 dogs at the house that were "outside" dogs and were flea bitten, terribly matted, large dogs in a 6x6 pen, no water or food. I am not one to cause issues at a baby shower but I definitely confronted the home owners at the end of the shower and then called the humane society. I literally cried when I went to pet the dogs it's was terribly sad. When I posted the story before someone reminded me that we are the voice for these furbabies and we are obligated to speak up on their behalf. |

I think for me, I'm going to try to stress on new puppy owner threads to get Health Insurance. Who knows maybe one or two might actually do it! |
