Before you shop at Target you might want to read this

Consumer complaints about Target Stores Returns and Exchange Policy

I have had a couple of bad experiences trying to return an item at Target shortly after purchase with a receipt. After reading these stories from others, I see I am not alone with my bad experiences. These reports are unbelievable. I just want to make people aware to make sure you are buying an item that you will not need to return when you shop at Target or Target online.

bondai 04-21-2012 12:42 AM

Don't use PayPal

Would be one lesson. I use Costco, they will take anything back. I have returned stuff that was a year old.

You are right, don't use paypal! The policy states online that you can return items purchased online to the store and someone mentioned in these complaints that you have to click on the return policy and it is in tiny print somewhere that you can only get a gift card if you pay with paypal.

mzw00dy 04-21-2012 03:09 AM

I quit shopping there years ago for the same reason

Ringo1 04-21-2012 12:35 PM

I've had problems returning things at Target as well. I rarely purchase from that store these days.

Lovetodream88 04-21-2012 12:49 PM

My mom has bought a lot of stuff from Target that she has returned with no probs and it normally only takes her 2 minutes to return it. Glad we got the good Target :).

Nancy1999 04-21-2012 12:58 PM

I think Target has a very generous return policy. People want newer and newer products and this especially true in electronics. The receipt clearly told her she had 45 days to return it, and she waited longer because her daughter was sick. Sorry, but who do you think pays for that? Target shoppers. Now if the product is defective, that's one thing, but just because a new version came out, no, that's just not right. I've seen some of the things they take back, and I think they are too generous.

I love Target, and I've never had a problem returning stuff there before. They even took back a Guitar Hero.

RileyDC 04-21-2012 05:31 PM

I have had to return a few times and have never had any problems......

sophias mommy 04-21-2012 05:43 PM

I LOVEEEE Target! I've always thought their return department is exceptional. Actually made a return today and it went smoothly! I bought potato salad last week and didn't realize until I got home that it was already open (gross). They returned my $$ :)

mom2gizzy 04-21-2012 07:21 PM

no issues with returns at Target, Walmart is just as easy....I would never take something back that was over 2 months old unless it was a big ticket item. I worked the chargeback area at Target in the late 80's--the stuff they would write off and had to destroy per the agreement with the manufacturer.

Ringo1 04-21-2012 08:15 PM

I've always thought Target should use the same return policy that Wal-Mart has ~ they take ANYTHING back. I'm not a big 'returner' by the way; I simply don't have the time.

Our Wal-Mart back home was always jammed with customers. Target - not so much.

Now that we've moved - I'm loving the Mejier Stores.

Walmart loses a lot of money because of there return anything policy. My God- mother worked at Walmart and said its just crazy what people bring back and sometimes gross and a lot of it has to be thrown away.

But still, they seem to be doing better than Target - at least in my area.

I worry about our Target; I do like to have choices but it seems empty half the time.

Perhaps it's just the difference in management at the area stores.

Walmart makes a lot of money because they treat there employees like crud. We have a few Targets around us and I prefer to go to the one with less people lol its better on my anxiety.

I love target. I have never had any difficulty returning anything from target if fact one time I didnt have a receipt for the item I needed to return or exchange and the girl looked up the code on the tag and saw where I had purchased it and gave me my money for it, thats pretty good Ive never seen anyone do that

celstu1 04-23-2012 05:05 AM

Ive never had a problem returning things at Target either. However.... they stick to the 'no receipt, then you get a gift card' policy. I think thats kind of old school. But Ive been able to return things there with no problems, as long as I have the receipt.

Macys return policy is amazing. I never need a receipt to return something. As long as the tag is on it, they take it back and give you the value either back to your Macys card, or cash. Macys also will let you use coupons on things that you bought weeks ago/months ago, if they still have the tag on it also. Just bring in the item and the coupon.

Love, love, LOVE Macy's! My favorite store.

I love Target!!! I've never had an issue with returning anything. I use my debit card A LOT, so I just swipe it and the money goes right back on it. I always lose my receipts and its never an issue. I also know depending on the Target and the employees many people take in their items and have price adjustments done. The Los Angeles ones aren't as flexible, but they're not unfair either.

I do think consumers are very unfair with these stores, and expect too much. I know the saying is "The customer is always right" I just strongly disagree with that statement. Recently, Target Style one of tatget's Facebook pages had a giveaway. It was a "while supplies last" kind of thing. People were furious when the site crashed, had hiccups, or whatever you want to call it, and some people didn't get a confirmation number. People ranted on that site about this and that all the time forgetting that it was a giveaway! No one is entitled to free stuff. If it was an item they ordered and paid for, I would understand, but something that was free?!?! Those that did get a bag were complaining that it hadn't arrived yet, one week after the giveaway. The rules clearly stated "allow 4-6 weeks for delivery".:facepalm:

Sorry for the rant.

I would think it's the same at every Target, but here as long as you paid using a card they are able to find the original transaction and credit your card. I had to return stuff around Christmas and lost the receipt, but once I swiped the card that I used the refund went back to my card. I definitely prefer Target over Walmart. Like someone else mentioned, Walmart is way too crowded and the stuff some people that shop there wear

This is always a fun site to see the audacity of some Walmart shoppers:

Yes, I have the card and it does make returning stuff even simpler, plus you get an extra 5% off! If you buy online, and pay with the card, you get the 5% off and shipping is always free. Love free shipping and of course you can return to the store, so you don't have to ship back.

Lol, yes Wal-Mart shoppers are known for their attire!

I've never had a problem returning anything to Target. There was one time I didn't have my receipt but they were able to look it up on the card that I purchased it on and returned it. I was told that I could return 2 items a year without a receipt. I've never had to do so since I normally keep my reciepts.

I don't see how that is "old school". If you don't have your reciept, how can you prove how much you paid for a particular item? Esp at a store like Target where items can go on sale, if you bought it at a low price, and tried to return it to get it back for a high price, how is that fair? If you don't have a reciept, you get store credit. At my shop, if you don't have a receipt, you don't get to return it. How do I know you got it from me?

Also at Macy's... one time I had the receipt. The girl said, oh you don't need the receipt, the bar code is right here! She did the transaction and tried to give me back store credit. I said, no I paid with cash, I want cash back. she said, no the register is telling me gift card. So I made her redo it with my original receipt, and guess what? I got cash back. I used to work for a department store, so I know how it works. Haven' been to Macy's in quite some years. Any department store for that matter.

I do it all the time! Seriously, I do. I've done it at least 20 times in the last 2 months. Same debit card too. There is a limit on how many times you can return something with no receipt and no card. You get everything back on a store gift card, and I believe the limit is $75.

Me too!!! I'm ALWAYS buying stuff from target.... and always returning it without my receipt LOL. It's because I know they can look it up on my card, so im careless with my receipt. I do however, be sure to keep my receipt for food stuff. Several times I've gotten home and realized that what I purchased must have been opened. Then I was able to go back and return/exchange it with no problems!

Isn't Target awesome! I'm careless with my receipt as is, and I like not worrying about it. I really want that red card now. 5% off sounds nice. I spend too much there already.

I literally find excuses to go there several times a week.....

I got the red card on Sunday!! I have great credit and I got approved for a measly $300 credit line :eek::eek:, so I couldn't even pay for my purchase with my new card, ugh!

Maybe it's because I have a Macy's card and always use it when I shop there but not a Target card, maybe that's why I always need to have the receipt. Usually if something is returnable and you do not have the receipt, you get back what the item is worth, so say you paid $20 2 weeks ago, return today without a receipt, and it's on sale for $15, they will offer $15 to return it.
