SSN - Stolen We got our W-2s this past weekend....and I went ahead and filed mine via TurboTax. Within an hour they both came back Rejected with a code R0000-902. I called the IRS and the guy checked my info. and said, yes, someone else has already filed with MY Social Security Number. I now have to paper file and send it along with an identity theft affidavit from the IRS website. He said it is happening, a LOT!! I immediately checked my bank.... my credit reports, etc. Everything looks okay. He told me to go ahead and file a complaint with the FTC and the Social Security Administration. - What a pain..... but I suppose it could be worse! Has anyone else had this happen or know of anybody who has? |
Wow don't mind my saying, that really reeks! Good thing you caught on early, it's still a hassle but can you imagine all kinds of trouble had you not done your taxes early? Sadly identity theft is on the rise and you never know who'll be next. Hope you'll be able to resolve this with a quickness, I'd be upset too. |
I am so sorry! What a nightmare. I'm glad you caught it before the person did something with your credit. I hope you can get all straightened out quickly, but what a nuisance and waste of your valuable time. |
Oh no! I'm glad you were able to catch it early and that it doesn't seem like anything has affected your credit or accounts yet. Identity theft is such a scary thing. Can they find out who filed with your SSN? |
I know..... I found out on Monday. I am actually surprised I am being so calm about it..... my new position at work has been super busy, although Great, and I just figured I don't need my stress level to go sky high. Not sure if I can find out who got it and/or how. I am at least hoping I alerted the IRS early enough to perhaps not send payment.....?? I asked the IRS guy if he could tell me when they filed. He said he couldn't.... but for me to just send my paperwork in and they will take care of it, from there. He did say that people who filed Extra Early this year have to wait an extra week just because of this very thing......and I had actually heard that on the news Monday morning. How Crazy!! And Annoying!! It has made me a little paranoid.... like I wonder if I should change my passwords on all my online stuff?? |
Scary. Hopefully the identity left person is getting a refund and they could catch them that way. So sorry for you what a pain. I hope you are able to resolve it easily. |
My SSN was stolen too. Evidently, a woman that lived in another town went to a car dealership and bought a used BMW using my credit. She was driving the car. She had to go to the bank a couple of times for loan paperwork. Something seemed off at the bank, and the Security of the bank actually called me, verified my info and I assured them she was a fake. She was arrested. They had her on tape spouting out my SSN just like it was hers. Once I started checking in to things, she was in the process of changing the address on my master credit report. She had a drivers license with my name, her picture and the address she used in the other town. She showed this at the car dealership. The positive thing is that it all happened so fast so there was nothing negative on my credit report. The loan she took out was immediately closed. Now I have a credit FREEZE on my SSN. No one can take out a loan - not even me. If I want to buy something big or want to apply for credit - I have to do a temp "unlock" with a PIN and a few days notice. I have no idea how she got my SSN. I hate to say it but I think that it may have been a medical office. I think she was looking for someone with my last name. My maiden name and her real last name were the same. We are not the same age or even the same race. I found out from the detectives that she grew up in this. Her parents had been arrested several times for id theft and for making fake ids. This girl spent less than a year in jail and I'm sure she will just go back to her old tricks. It just won't be with my SSN! There really should be more severe consequences for ID Theft. I'm sorry this happened to you and I hope you can get it all cleared relatively fast. I do recommend putting a freeze on your SSN for sure! You have to send a letter to each of the three reporting agencies. Just check their website for the details. I did have to provide a police report with the letter. Have you filed one? I would. |

I live right behind a police station. I asked the IRS guy if I should file a report... and he said to first see if it looked like anything else had been done. I think I am going to just go over to the station and see what I need to do. I will put a freeze on my SSN! So that is with the three credit report companies or with the Social Security Administration? What a Pain!! |
Freeze it with the 3 major Credit Bureaus - Equifax, Experian and Transunion. Keep a close eye on your credit report too for any changes in the next couple of months in case something slips in before you freeze it. |
I have been a member of LifeLock for years....no one can open an account or change anything to do with my credit without an alert and notification from LifeLock...the transaction is frozen, and I am notified...if I dont approve it, everything stops right there. This can also be a pain in the rear....I went to the dentist and was setting up a monthly payment plan for the 1.3 trillion dollar bill I had just gotten from him, and my cell phone rang as I stood there in the dentist office. It was security with LifeLock....great job, LifeLock!! It may not be a solution everyone likes, but it has worked well for me! What a terrible thing tohappen to you....all the extra time and effort that YOU, the innocent person in all this, is going to have to endure.....The "good" ALWAYS suffer for the deeds of the "bad". |
