Can I ask the guys/handy people a question?
 
Hey guys, or gals who might know a thing or two about this. I have a question for you. I am wanting to get my husband some tools for Christmas. He is working on building up a collection of tools and making him a work area. I want to get him a good brand that would work great and last. What is a good brand of tools? I was looking at sears, Lowes, and Home Depot. Any handy people out there with any advice or reviews of your favorite tools? He wants to be able to do basic things around our house, nothing too fancy. Just good tools that a homeowner should have.

Sears craftsman for wrenches, and for power tools drills ect...Dewalt brand are pretty good, so says the dh who is a builder. Hope this helps:) Good Luck!!

DeWalt or Ridgid....for a good drill definately DeWalt. For a sawzall either Milwaukee or DeWalt. If looking a mitre saw make sure its compound (for trim work & future crown molding) and not just a chop saw, and go with 12" or bigger not just a lil 10" one.

I personally think Craftsman is now junk...same made in China cr*p as Harbor Freight, so make as well get basic wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers at Harbor Freight as they are alot cheaper (if you have a grandpa or someone willing to part with their old Craftsman tools...take 'em! same if you come across old Craftsman at garage sales..definately pick 'em up...they used to be good quality tools...)

Ok, y'all are going to think I'm nuts but I have no idea. On this set below, what is the difference in each of these that come in this set? I know he said he'd like a good drill, but this one has 2 in it and I'm not sure what is the difference. Also, what about the little thingies that go into it? ROFL. I'm laughing at myself here, but I obviously am not tool oriented.

by thingies...I mean drill bits I guess. I'm sorry to ask stupid questions. I would get my Daddy to go with me to look but he is in Alabama and I'm in PA. The only man I have up here is my husband and I obviously can't ask him.

One is a regular driller/driver and the other is an impact driver. This is a nice set and 18V is the power to go with. Impact drivers have more torque and go in bursts. They are great for going through hard material or if you need to get a screw or bolt out that is stuck in something. It gives a stronger burst of power to get the bolt or screw moving if its stuck...like when something is rusted together.

He mentioned a Dremel tool as well. Do you think a drill set, bit set, and a dremel set would be a nice Christmas present from a wife? :)

That's an average basic starter set. I personally prefer titanium drill bits, as they tend to last longer and don't break or dull as easily. For screwdriver bits you just need a couple of basic phillips & flat drivers. Irwin makes decent drill bits. A pack of spade bits is also good to have.

Craftsman for hand tools such as wrenches, screw drives, etc. For Power tools like drills, make sure you get at least 18V and a back up battery. Remember, you get what you pay for.

Cordless Compact Hammer Drill Kit — 18 Volt, Model# DC725KA | Rotary Hammers | Northern Tool + Equipment Its a cordless and it has an extra battery with a charger. My DH has this one and he is in Construction. He builds large commercial buildings. He says he has used a lot of different brands and non of them compare to the DeWalt. Dh said he has dropped this off 6 ft ladders and it didn’t break or anything! DH swears by this!

Ya im sure you can find good deals right now- I was just showing that link for the drill. Yes it screws things in :) you can get different drill bits to screw in metal, wood or plastic!

Oh thank you. Hubby has a plug in, and last I read so many portables didn't have the power, it's good to know that now they do.
