I used a hammer drill when I had framed my basement wood interior walls and wanted to anchor them to the concrete floor using Tapcon bolts. I used a regular drill/driver to anchor those same walls to the ceiling joists (which were in fact the floor joists of the first floor of my home). A hammer drill is a for tool specific work, not everyday drilling & driving. Aymee....the original DeWalt set you posted of a drill/driver & impact combo is a good one! |

First of all, Don't worry what I recommend. |
Could someone explain to me what the difference is between these two sets? Shop DEWALT 2-Tool 18-Volt 18 volt Compact Cordless Drill/Impact Combo Kit at Lowes.com and the first one posted: Shop DEWALT 2-Tool 18-Volt Compact Cordless Drill/Impact Combo Kit at Lowes.com They are different prices, but I can't figure out how they are different. |

Yes, a drill does also screw things using a screwdriver bit that you put in the chuck instead of a drill bit. Many like the quick change bit systems for this as you don't have to loosen& tighten the chuck to change from drill bit to screw driver bit, so it makes the work of drilling pilot holes & then driving screws, go quicker...and with very lil practice you can change from one to the othe,r one-handed, while still holding the item you're screwing in place with the other hand...definately speeds up work. |

I will when you are recommending something that isn't inline with what the OP requested! She clearly stated that she's looking for a drill that a homeowner would use for basic projects around the house, which is not what you recommend. In dog equivalent, it would be like suggesting a choke collar... for a yorkie. |
Thank you both for the replies, one last question, I think hubby would definitely like the quick change bit systems, are any of these quick change? Also, thank you southernbelle for starting the thread! |

Sorry...wasn't meaning to come across bitchy....prolly just a lil over-excited there's a thread I actually know something about. I'm not a breeder, so don't have a wealth of info on the whole pup thing other than my personal experience. And I don't know my way around a kitchen & can't cook worth a darn...so on all the food threads I have nothing to offer. But DIY...from big projects to small..from framing to tiling to plumbing to anything other than electrical (which just scares the heck outta me) I really enjoy and have a tool box (ie: garage) that reflects that:) |

Pardon the late response...whenever I bought tools for my DH I went to the store and knew what brand (dewalt) told the staff I wanted a dewalt drill (for example) and they would ask for what use, etc, etc. I would then go home with a drill (or whatever) and nothing was ever returned. The staff knows their products so if you know the brand you'd like they can guide you. That way you get advice from folks who sell these items day in and out and know the specifications of the items...this way it's less about personal preferences than when you ask around of the folks you know. |
Thanks guys for all of your help and explaining things. I went to Lowe's today and looked some more. I am going to look at other places and compare prices, but I definitely want to get him a good brand that will last. I thought about getting him the gift card, but my husband is one of those people who is not big on gift cards....weird, I know and I don't get it either, but he is just that way. So I am going to get him a nice one and a gift receipt. If it is not what he had in mind, I will certainly let him know he can exchange it without hurting my feelings. But I really think he will like whatever I choose. He's not too hard to please. :) |
