It's been a while since I've been on YT. Sorry about that, but life has had me diverted a bit. That, and it's election season and I've been arguing politics on a talk forum. What can I say, I'm a political junkie.
Things are going well with me and my crew. It's the same chaos as usual LOL, but that's my normal. By 'crew' I mean the Yorkies, birds and the rescue cats and now, as of yesterday, my newest addition.....a big ole' dog we call Buck. Yahoo!! :D
I met Buck last week while coming home from taking my wife to work. He was hobbling around the neighborhood and it was obvious he had been hit by a car. Being only a couple of blocks from home, I went and got some food to try to entice him to come to me. Well, I had to find him again, which wasn't too hard. He was moving kinda slow and sniffing around in yards.
I stopped and tried to get him to come to me, but he kept hobbling off to another yard. Finally, after about 4 tries, I got him cornered a bit. He tried to get away, but when he put his rear leg down, he just collapsed in the road.
Anyway, at that point he had no choice so I approached him. I let him sniff me and put the food down. He gobbled it up, right there in the middle of the road. After a few minutes, I was able to get him off to the side and in the grass.
I asked a few neighbors there if anyone knew the dog and no one did. I got a man to call Animal Control. The officer checked and he was micro-chipped. Okay, so off he went to the Humane Society and I was thinking he would be re-united with his owner.
That didn't happen. The Humane Society made repeated attempts to contact the owner, but they wouldn't answer the phone calls. So, on last Monday I went to check on him. The folks at the HS said they had to give the owner 5 days to claim the dog before they could take possession and do anything.
That 5 days was up on Wednesday and I went back to the HS. They said they had no way to diagnose him and he would be put down. I said I was was willing to see if he could be fixed, but being the afternoon before Thanksgiving, there was nothing I could do then. So things were put on hold until yesterday.
Okay, (you still with me?) I went and took him to the vet. The vet x-rayed him and his right rear femur was broke clean in two. Now, at this point he was still the HS's dog. I went back there and had them sign him over to me and the vet agreed to do the surgery that same day. Who would of thought THAT would happen?
So Buck had his surgery and I was able to bring him home. He is resting well and the Yorkies are well, they're getting used to him being here LOL. Buck has about 8 weeks recovery time on this injury.
I say 'this injury' because the vet discovered his left rear knee is messed up, too, and will need surgery. We go back in 2 weeks for suture removal and the vet wants to do the other surgery as soon as his right leg is stable enough to carry him. We also found out last night that 3 of his teeth are broken, so that's another issue.
Oh, about Buck. He's a mutt. The HS listed him as Chow/Retriever mix, but there's some Shepherd and some Bulldog in him, too. He's about 60 pounds now, but he's skinny. He looks to be about 1 1/2 to 2 years old and is neutered.
Sorry I can't post pics today. My camera batteries are dead, but I'll re-post with pics ASAP.
So, that's what's up with me. We're very happy to have Buck and look forward to getting him back to 100%. It's gonna take a while, but he seems happy and is taking it in stride so far. |
