Are you a "Ma'am" or a "Miss"? I get called maam most of the time. What? I'm 31 and asian so I look 21. I put on a Hello Kitty shirt, and all of a sudden everyone is calling me Miss. HA! I should wear HK more often huh? btw I do not dress like I am in my 30's. Mostly I wear baby t's with cartoons or similar on them. |
I live in the "south," so usually it is sweetie or honey. I have gotten a few ma'ams from teens. It's depressing. :p |
I hate it when a customer calls me Ma'am. I know I am 50, but I don't like to feel like I am 50:D |
usually the people that call me ma'am are older than me. How does that make sense? |
I am a ma'am unfortunately. I don't think you ever feel your true age. |

I grew up in the south. I NEVER called an adult by first name.. except with a Miss in front.. My daughers friends did not call me by my given name either. It was yes ma'am.. or thank you ma'am Now.. in Miami the students address teachers (females) as Miss. Not ma'am or Mrs. XXXXX it is Miss. It takes some getting used to. |

I live in Tn so when I am working (at a call center) where we take calls from all over the US. I say yes ma'am or sir when i am talking to people. Most have no problem with this and many times comment on my accent. I was taught it is polite to say ma'am and sir as a sign of respect. I do have some women who, already aggavated about their medical bill who will mimic the ma'am. I remember the first time someone called me Ma'am felt so old and i was not even 30 yet. Funny call one day. I kept saying sir to a man on the phone. He said quit calling me sir, i am not in the military. I apologized and sd it was a southern thing and I could not help it. I kept saying it all through the call and he got aggravated with me. Could not help it at all. |
i get a lot of miss and it bothers me because i'm not 14 anymore. i'm 23, married, and work there full time on salary. everyone thinks i'm a teenager working there on summer break. i'm like hello, i have a baby bump, and i've been married over 2 years. lol i just bugs me to get called Miss by kids WAY younger than me. |

I'm 23 and I get called ma'am ALL THE TIME. It makes me so sad...:( |
I use the word ma'am all the time but have only started since I moved to Georgia (and yes I get called ma'am). It doesn't really bother me anymore, in fact I would be shocked if someone didn't use it. Also all my friends children refer to me with a "Miss" in front of my name which I also LOVE. When I was a child I was never allowed to refer to my parents friends with their first name unless we had known them for years and then it was a rare incident. To this day I still call them Mr or Mrs (old habits die hard). |

LOL!! I'm mostly Irish, and we have flat butts too! My half sister, who looks a lot like my German descent step-father, would always call me "pancake butt" growing up. (We make up for the flat butts in the chest department, though!) ;) |
Sorry, got off track from the OP. I lived in the South for a while and picked up that habit of calling everyone sir and ma'am. Didn't realize "ma'am" could be offensive. Might have to rethink that one. Since moving back up North, I really do miss the South. The food is really good. Unfortunately, I am trapped in Pennsylvania Dutch country - the hometown food is TERRIBLE!!! :tongue2: |

I have to tell a funny story. When I was in my late teens I was working for a company and met a lady, I asked her name and she said Miss Kathy. So I said ok, nice to meet you, may I ask your last name? She said Kathy. Long story short her name was Kathy Cathy (she married a Mr. Cathy --not too sure of the correct spelling) she had a lot of fun with me... in my mind I did not call her Miss Kathy:( |

wrong post sorry! |
I remember the first time I got called Ma’am, it really shook me up. I was appropriate, but it still bothered me. Yesterday, I got called "Miss", so now I’m wondering if I’m in that group of women where you’re so old, people act like you’re young, calling us “girls” or saying we are xx years “young.” Never have liked to be called “honey” or “sweetie” by a waitress, I don’t know why that bothered me so much, maybe in the nursing home it will be okay. |
After I hit 30, Miss started to seem a bit silly but I wasn't a Mrs. Now, at 39, Miss is just ridiculous to me, still not a Mrs. and ma'am makes me feel old. So I'm going with Ms. :-) |

And, really, I rarely get called Ma'am or Miss. Come to think of it. I just don't hear that a lot, maybe we in Maryland are not southern enough. I think the only time I get called ma'am is if I'm speaking to a technical person over the phone or ordering food, etc. Maybe I'm still too young ;) |

Ma'am is a southern (or military)thing, and a title with a first name is incorrect, except in the south. When, if, someone calls me ma'am, I tell them what my name is...not ma'am. I live in GA, but, I am a true yankee!! |
