My dtr and her bf have netflix and is trying to convince us to get it and downgrade our cable. I still want my tv. Would love to see more movies when we want to. Trying to save money any way we can. Right now we have a deal with att. and it looks as if we downgrade our programming we will spend more money cause we would have to pay a monthly fee for the dvr. We will crunch numbers this weekend to see what is best for us. |
I just cancelled mine. I had it for about 4 or 5 months, and it seems just about everything I wanted to see was "unavailable". Forget getting new releases - I can watch them "on demand" months ahead of Netflix, and now with the price increasing, we decided it just wasn't worth it. |
I dropped down to just streaming for now. Not sure what I will do after the change. Right now I get dvd's for another month so I am cramming them in as many as I can- lol Bugs the crap out of me that they are making these changes but we do stream a lot. So, we will see. |
We use to have Netflix but then decided to cancel it. Now with the price increases I'm glad i did. We use REDBOX. 1$ each movie. There's a Redbox at every convience/drug store around here. And you dont have to return it to the same one. |
I was clueless that Netflix raised their prices. Because of this thread, I downgraded so my cost stays the same. |
I'm glad in our area we still have a lot of mom and pop dvd stores here, and new releases are $1 and blurays are $1.50. I don't like redbox bc the discs are always scratched or everything is always out. There's also always a line for Red Box, esp at my Stater Bros market, when there is a video store literally outside. Why are you people standing in line? I initially got Netflix purely for the movies. Any tv shows I want to watch are availalbe on hulu or on the network's website a week or so after it airs. Any new releases I would go to the video store. So I wanted netflix for those old obscure movies that my dvd shop probably wouldn't have. NONE of the movies I wanted to watch were available for streaming, they were all on the upgraded dvd plan. So that's why we cancelled. I heard that Netflix is upping the cost bc of studios are making them pay more for royalties (I think that's the word?) so they are passing the costs down to us. |
I think we are leaving it.... with Red Box in about 6 locations less than a mile from our house, we can rent a movie at any time for a night for $1. Netflix is not my fav anyways, they don't get new releases when you want to see them. I can't believe they are crazy enough to raise prices like that with Red Box taking off the way it is. |

I have had Netflix for the past 8 years and had always been pleased with the pricing for videos mailed and being able to stream through my Wii. However with this increase in pricing  I think I will try just dropping the videos in the mail and give it a few months to see how it goes with the streaming....It's just crazy to have to pay seperately for both.... |
I love the instant netflix there is so much on it now, we'll prob keep it. the rentals aren't that bad either and we only do one at a time, but sometimes they are scratched and that PISSED ME OFF BIG TIME!! |
I went to the unlimited streaming plan for $7.99 last night. I think we'll be fairly happy with that-we have about 150 movies/shows in our queue so that should keep us busy for a while. I can't stand Blockbuster, we do have one left here. They are the exact reason we came straight home from their store & ordered Netflix! When another big video store went out of business, the next day BB upped their prices-$5 for OLD movies! Yes, it was going to cost us $10 to rent 2 old movies, I could've probably found them in the $5 bin at walmart! |

We had Netflix since 05/2009 and cancelled 07/2011. I got tired of the price increases and when we received a movie, somethimes it would sit there 2 weeks before we watched it. With the way the economy is, it did not make sense to keep it. I now go by Red Box and get a movie, renting it online and dropping by to pick it up is not that bad! Also at 1.09 a movie, it is a lot better deal for us!:p |
I just got the Netflix for streaming on the Wii about three months ago now. My plan is still the $7.99 plan or whatever it is... it doesn't seem like a bad deal to me. I still go to RedBox or BlockBuster Express for NEW movies and some movies I just like to own so I'll find them on eBay or whatever... but for me, I don't have cable/directtv in my room so the Netflix is really handy when I'm not in the mood for my already owned-movies or don't feel like leaving the house to pick up a DVD. I've found some good "indy" type movies that I never would have watched had it not been for netflix.... so yeah I'm pretty happy with it. But wouldn't be paying any more than what I am now. |
We have kept ours, but cut back. We used to get the Watch Instantly and 4 DVD's at a time. Now we get 1 DVD at a time and the Watch Instantly. For us, it's a good deal. We watch the Watch Instantly through the hubby's XBox all the time. |
Funny how this thread reappeared, I just got netflix today. I'm just getting the one month trial for free before school starts. It's $18/month for 1 dvd and online streaming. Definitely not keeping it. My bf was the one that had netflix, so I was able to get the one month trial. :) After school starts, I won't have much time to watch movies anyways :D When my bf had it last year, if I got lucky, 2 dvds/week, but usually 1 dvd/week...not worth it for me... |
They are going to go under if they keep it up. It was in the news that their stocks are plummeting. LOL |
It's not Netflix's fault. Just like we all hate how the Neilsen rating systems works (something like 1 Neilson household represents like 4500 households?) and how we can't all watch our favorite TV shows online the day after they come out and how movies theater tickets are like $15 now and how Kindle books cost way more than paperback books - it's the studios/publishers/etc. pulling the strings. They don't understand how people want to consume their content. It's the same thing that happened with Music. Netflix would have everything on streaming if they could. I'm sure they are quite ready for the DVD model to go away. I wonder if there isn't some element of "look, our customers all dropped DVDs, they ONLY want to stream" in this move, to give them more leverage to stream everything. Netflix has/had contracts with the studios that are coming up for renewal, and they will probably have to pay big $$ to renew them. That's why some stuff that used to be available for streaming is gone :( I know Redbox is $1 ($1.50 or $2 for Blu Ray), and we do use it, but my husband got a movie he wanted to watch on Blu Ray and a client called and he didn't watch it and three days later, it's like a $6 Redbox DVD. Plus, they only have new stuff. It's $3-5 to rent HD on iTunes. So in the end, Netflix is worth it to us, for now. |

I know, it's crazy. My stepsister used to work at the movies so I used to get in for free but she doesn't work there anymore and I actually paid the other day and was like  holy crap! Going to the movies is expensive. I hear you on the Redbox. There's been many nights where I simply forget I have it and then it ends up being a $7 rental fee. Once, my mom didn't return it for like 20 days, oops! Like I said, I like having the Netflix streaming since I don't have cable in my room, so it's convenient to have right through the Wii. So I won't be canceling it anytime soon, I don't think. Oh, and renting on iTunes... I do that sometimes, but like you said, sometimes it seems not even worth it. It'll be $2.99 or whatever to rent a movie and a lot of times, I can find the movie I wanted to watch on eBay to PURCHASE for like $1-$3 more. A lot of DVD's for sale on eBay int he $5 range. So half the time I end up just purchasing them. It seems silly to rent a movie only available for 24hrs when I could own it for $2 more or something. But it depends on the movie, too, and if it's "ownable" LOL. Some I don't care to own. I really miss being able to go up the road to a local video store and rent a DVD or a VHS. I also cannot get into reading books on a Kindle or electronically... I like having the physical book in my hands. I am so going to miss when all the book stores begin closing too (all the Borders just closed near us, so sad :() |
