Aren't you a man? Why don't you know how to do [fill in the blank].. a rant thread

Please join in!

Why don't you (men) know how to:

Change your tire/tube?
Use a presta valve?
Use a pump in general?
Screw the left pedal in the left side and the right pedal in the right side?

Sorry, just a few bike repair rants. Some of these guys are just unbelieveable! They know how to do all types of cool tricks, but when it comes to changing the tube in their tires they are useless. Then when they come in to get said repair they can't do, they ask me is the bf is in so they can get some help. Just bc YOU don't know how to do it doesn't mean I don't know how to do it. Changing a tube plus labor costs $11.99. A tube cost $5, and some tire levers cost $6.99. If you do the math, they can buy some tire levers and change their own tubes for eternity and it would cost the same as one flat tire service. You guys have NO idea how much time I spend everyday changing tires or tubes for people.

Ok rant over, really needed to get that out. Now please share your own. :)

My DH works in warehousing flooring products, from carpeting, laminates, and wood, to padding, underlayment, wood trim, glues, and supplies. He can look in the back of an 18 wheeler and tell within 500 lbs or less how much the load weighs, in less than a minute. These trucks carry anywhere from 30,000-75,000 pounds. This truly amazes me.

BUT, at home it is a major feat for him to find the mustard in the refrigerator. It's been in the same place for 20 years. I just don't understand!:D

chattiesmom 06-11-2011 06:03 AM

Hummm, from my discussions with women from all over, most men should just start with learning to pump and screw -- then move on to biycles, cars, etc.

Learning to swing a mop and an egg flipper would be a plus as well.

:lol tears Mine has the same problem! Where is this or where is that. We get up and find it immediately. (Because they don't look) His biggest one is finding where to put the dirty clothes. You know, the same place I have been putting them for 20 years now!

SladesMommy 06-11-2011 08:50 AM

Let's see- just in the past couple months-

Take care of his truck
Fix a disposal
Hang a closet rod
Nail in a nail
Unclog a toilet

Good thing my mama taught me to be independent, because I end up having to do most of the "man chores" around here. At least he is strong and can move things up 3 flights of stairs by himself, so I guess he's worth keeping around :)

Can't change a bike tire?? A grown man?? You gotta be kidding! I've been able to do that since I was a little kid. At least guys like that keep you in a job.

I'm pretty handy, as are most all the guys I know. We can all do some carpentry, mechanical work, know how to clean a house and cook, too!! Really, between me and my friends, there's very little we can't do on our own. If we need a little help, there's always a buddy and we swap favors. Isn't that how it's done?

BTW, my bike is a 1973 Peugeot PX10-E. I bought it new and it's still in cherry shape. It's not completely original....I've changed the rims out to accommodate clinchers instead of sew-ups and now have sealed bearing hubs. I put on some side-pull brakes and have fingertip shifters. Other than that, it's as it was made...a real classic.

Mom to Hot Rod 06-11-2011 01:47 PM

Hmmm, let's see:

don't you know the coffee cup goes in the dishwasher?

the laundry bag works a whole lot better when it is put back onto the frame and the clothes will have a place to go???? (big discussions over this one!)

Mine calls me at work and wants to know where a pot is so he can heat a can of soup. I come home and he has used the glass dome lid which is shaped like a bowl to heat it on top of the stove and of course it exploded. What a mess!!!! And then he blamed me because I didn't tell him the pot was metal not glass and that the glass part was the lid...geesh it isn't rocket science.

Manvision - a unique sight

My hubby has man vision too;) You know how you can walk over a tuft of dog hair a dozen times and not see it?

The fridge is foreign territory (that is when I am home), otherwise he manages to find what he wants to it really well by himself.

Yup you read that right! Then they complain about the $6.99 labor fee. Bf says not to gripe bc they just bought us a burger LOL. I especially hate the Vittoria tires with the extra tight beads, and trispokes and aerosokes labor costs more! I hate changing those out! But the thing that gets me is they ask me where "the guy" is bc I couldn't possibly know how to do it if they don't!

btw, it just happened again. The customer asked if he could talk to "they guy" again, and when bf came out, he asking him if he changed to green rims would it be too much green? I mean come on!

That sounds absolutely beautiful! You need to post a pic! I would like to find a vintage road bike in a small enough frame for me, for now I ride fixed gear. I custom built my bike. I love my vintage Brooks. :D Here's mine.

Same here. Both cars I've owned have been stick. 3 out of the 4 vehicles at home are stick. It's a preference. But, when BF has a V8 mustang and chimps out for an automatic, what's the point of having all that horsepower?

It's funny to see 3 grown men at home stare at one little dog turd on the piddle pad. They seem so perplexed. They then come find me to take care of the issue.

My husbands favorite is when he is talking to me is YOU NEED TO call so and so and do so and so. Also I ask him what do you want for supper, his response is always WHAT DO YOU HAVE. Oh and he is eating breakfast at the table and sets his coffee cup on the edge waiting for a refill. Does this look like the WAFFLE HOUSE? I always know what he had for lunch because he leaves the leftovers on the counter.
I could rant all day but he is always doing some type of hard work in the house doing improvements or working out around the house and yard. He was in commercial construction for 45 years. Most of the time I couldn't do without him.

boopster 06-11-2011 03:54 PM

This is so funny. George apparently doesn't have the strength to close drawers all the way. I can always tell what he's been into because the drawers are sticking out about an inch. He's also not allowed to touch any electronics in the house other than the TV remote.

IMO, if a guy can't change a tire, he has no right asking where 'the guy' is.

That's a really nice looking bike you have!!. I like the gold anodizing...it really stands out against the black.

I'm out of the loop as to what's going on with bikes these days, so tell me....what is that wheel lacing style called? I can see that it's a 4 cross pattern, but never saw the twist on the spokes before. Is it supposed to give a less stiff ride?

You do have a small frame set. My ex had a PX 10 too and her's was the smallest made. Maybe you could find one. I've seen them before (not in that size, though) and they sell in about the $800 range.

Don't have a pic on my computer of my bike, but here's one like mine, except that mine's metallic royal blue w/ black lugs but everything else looks the same.

Good Idea, My husband has trouble with the remote sometimes and has to get help from our 17 year old son if the batteries are dead.

I have to share this one with you all lol

Oh, and mine doesn't know how to use the hamper. True story........ I was so ticked off I kicked every piece of clothing he drops at the side of the bed before he steps into the shower, under the bed. Days go on and I decided to teach him a lesson. So, he runs out of clean boxers :D

I see him frantically looking for a pair for work. I ask "whatcha looking for?" "Underwear!" He exlaims......

I ask "where did you put them last?" Needless to say, he found the dirty pile :p

Having no other choice, he had to throw a speed wash load as I rolled over and pretended to fall back asleep (tee hee). Yeap, you guessed it, he doesn't know how to use the washer and puored a little too much laundry soap on the SPEED WASH cycle on our brand new HE washer

He dries the load and off to work he goes. Later on at work, I get a text that reads "My (nether regions) are on fire! I am in so much pain I don't think I can make it my whole shift (12 hrs, btw). I LOLed so hard at the sound of the text but put my phone down and continued my work in a busy Pediatric ICU

I get home and he's bow-legged and his family jewels and everything adjacent to them are pretty badly chemically burnt, inflammed and peeling. Poor thing was bow-legged and in tears.

Yep, he wore them with lots of Tide still on them and got a pretty bad reaction.

To conclude my story, he has since learned where the laundry basket is, how to use it and how to properly wash a load of clothes :biggrin8:

:thumbs26:

I love vintage bikes and esp lugged frames.:)

Honestly, I don't know what they call the twisted 4 cross, I just call them twisted spokes. Some of my customers did in fact say it was a bit less stiff of a ride, but I don't weigh all that much, and I can't tell the difference between the twisted and the untwisted. For me, its purely aesthetic.

My frame is a CrMo "vintage style" (haha) frame, it's a 50. I know it will be hard to find a vintage road bike in anything close to that. I like riding fixed, but I want an old road bike just because. :D They don't make 'em like they used to.

I want to make a Frankenstein bike with all the parts that these kids leave behind and don't know what they are. The pedals I have on my bike are vintage Campy pedals that a kid wanted off his bike for "white BMX pedals" Another swapped out his Sugino cranks for a Lasco. (actually twice that happened.) Too bad I was already done with my build.

One day I hope to own a Pashley also. Swoon! In the meantime I have a "knockoff" version. Fake Brooks and all LOL.
