I will say... the first dog I got for my grils (about 12 years ago) was well cared for but I did not have a clue!! I didn't even tell my dh I was getting him because I thought he would not notice. Sebastain was a 7 lb pomerianain and ..well... he was noticed. My thing is.. I got him and it was MY responsibility to keep him and care for him. I have been learning everyday about dog care sense that day some not so much fun, but all part of the package!!

In my experience it is perfectly normal for a puppy to:

1) gnaw on fingers, hands, toes, etc. -- I have raised several litters of pups and happen to LOVE LOVE LOVE this phase. Most of my pups have teethed on my various available body parts and my adults aren't chewers or biters.

2) zoom around the house like the energizer bunny on speed -- I stole that phrase from someone 'cause it made me smile.

4) puppies, especially Yorkie pups ae curious - and determined to get to what interests them

6) pups aren't born knowing how to walk on a leash -- it takes lots of love, patience and good humored training to acquire a dog that will walk politely

7) one of the ways pups learn about their environment is by taste -- they will sample anything that interests them and especially things that have their owner's scent on it, including pills that have been dropped, flowers, electrical cords

I guess I have ranted enough. I love pups and all of their silliness. It is a shame that those who don't like the "puppy phase" don't just skip it and adopt an adult or perhaps settle for a pet rock. There are way too many rescues and dogs in shelters. Or perhaps if you are lucky, you could even nab a retired breeding dog or bitch from a REPUTABLE breeder.

I think the only thing I didn't have to "deal" with was #1, but I got Rizzo at 14 weeks. I still can't believe with all the information available to people these days that they can't just look up what to expect during the first year of a pup's life. I loved the puppy stage, but I also puppy proofed and I have hard floors to clean up the messes
BTW, Rizzo is 18 months and still does pretty much all of the above I'm not sure there are too many breeds that are more curious than a yorkie.

Don't feel bad. My mother had the same idea when we were young. She went out and brought home a bichon w/o saying anything to husband. When he noticed the dog that eve, he had to sit down he was laughing so hard that she just went out and brought it home.

I love puppy phase!! It's a difficult time (with training), but it's also the most memorable time you share with them!! I just wish I was more educated on what pups are capable of doing

I still remember when we first picked up Carmel and he was soo scared. Now, he has no doubt that we love and will always protect him =)

I agree! So glad to see others out there like me! I love babies of all species! I just think birth is such a miracle and being part of a forming how a baby grows into adulthood is such a blessing whether that be baby human or baby puppy and it's sad to me when others don't appreciate it. But I agree, if it's not for you then I certainly respect that but why not adopt an older dog and then you won't have to deal with those things? And maybe to go on and add to your rant, I think some of those people who can't deal with it and who probably weren't commited to begin with and they realize that it's work and responsiblity to care for a pet, wind up giving up when the puppy isn't so cute anymore and now you have an untrained adult dog with issues being dropped off at a shelter or rescue.

Oh I get SOOOO MAD when someone says "I had NO idea what I was in for" when speaking about a new pup!!! My first question is always "well didn't you research the breed of dog before buying one?" Geezzzz, I think there is too much info out there for people to play dumb any longer.
I LOVE the puppy phase! Yes, parts of it are hard.... the one thing I learned when doing it with 2 pups at the same time was, don't blame them, blame yourself. AFter losing about 20 pairs of shoes myself, I was like "DUH if I don't close my closet, its MY fault". I warn people who came over, they are puppies and not housebroken yet, if you leave something on the floor, shoes, bags, etc.. they will either chew it or pee on it. My brother got soooo mad at them one time and I had to tell him, I warned you... be mad at yourself, not them.

You are so right. I have told my family members that they need to try to be smarter than the dog. They know that puppies and young dogs chew. They know what the dog can reach and get into. How hard is it to keep their belongings out of a little dog's reach? If people do not have the time and responsibility to watch a puppy like a hawk 24/7 then they don't need a puppy! Dogs do not train themselves! I'm sorry but at least half the people I meet are not responsible enough to raise and train children much less a dog. Dogs are companion animals. They want to be with their people. Why bother to get one if you don't want to endure what goes along with training that cute little furry puppy?
