Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally 48/2(12) The 2x12 has to go first. |
I think you might be getting 288 when you put it into a calculator based on how you're entering it. If you enter if from left to right you are in essence putting parentheses in without realizing it and thus changing the answer. I agree with 2 for the answer. |

Let's see (this could be embarrassing): 48 ÷ 2(9+3) 48 ÷ 18 + 6 48 ÷ 24 = 2 Okay, now I'm gonna look :). |
My head hurts!:doh34: |

you always do the work in the parentheses first. Order of operations: The operations inside parentheses () and brackets [] are done first. Then any operations involving exponents (which you will learn about later). Then do all multiplying and dividing from left to right. Finally, do all addition and subtraction from left to right. The way the equation is written in a line is what makes everyone get different answers, because most people will just assume that everything after the division sign is the denominator. The 2 in front of the parantheses is not PART of the parentheses, but can be written that way to show multiplication. Multiplication and division are equal, and are carried out left to right. |

I've actually been debating this with a few people for a few hours now... ;p and that's the BEST LINK I've seen to support my answer! Teehee... The main debeate is if people think the 2(9+3) takes precedence (or should go first) BEFORE the division or not... I personally think you do 2(9+3) first... |

then work the equation for left to right. |

48÷2(9+3) = 48/2(12) = 48/24 = 2 |
Essentially the problem is 48/[2(9+3)]. You cannot split up the demoninator...solve the entire denominator before dividing. It's alot easier to see written as a fraction numerator on top of a demoninator instead of the "/" symbol. To get 288 as the correct answer, the problem would have to be written (48/2)*(9+3). Otherwise you cannot divide before solving your denominator. |

You solve what is in the parentheses first, then work the multiplication and division left to right. That is what the rules state. |
