Crick in neck-any cures?? I've developed a crick in my neck due to all I've been going through this past month. I've had it for 2 straight weeks now. Does anyone know how to get rid of these DARN things????!!!! I've tried taking 800 mg. Ibuprofen 3 times a day and used ice packs about 3 times a day (per my doctor). What else can I do? I can barely move. |
Lila - if there's no swelling in your neck, heat might help. I used to use icyhot rub (don't use it within a couple of hours after bathing though) and it helped a lot. And coming from a family of doctors, I was in my 40s before I had my first chiropractic adjustment. I was skeptical but now I'm a convert. (Poppy is probably spinning in his grave right now). I'm lucky -- George is a retired DC so he can take care of most of my aches and pains before they get bad. |
Yes the cure for a crick in the neck is a vacation, and that just also happens to be a cure for the blues, so you have the double reason to do it! |
As you reduce the stress, you will reduce the crick. Also, try some slow head turns, left, right, up and down. |
Moist heat for muscle spasm. It is good to put a thick turkish towel around your neck and stand in the hot shower, letting it beat down on the towel around the back of your neck, bathing your whole neck and shoulders in the heat and steam for up to 15 mins., 4 x daily. And when you have a "crick", do not put your head back as that is more unstable. |
sometimes icing it or putting heat on it helps me. |
What's with all the ice and heat! I would rub some dirt on it, and then vigorous stretching. |
Heat would probably really help, as well as a massager, if you have one. I think taking care of ones parents has to be one of the hardest, most stressful jobs there is. After my mom passed away I never had another panic attack. I was having them all the time. Stress will kill you. Would I do it again? Absolutely!! I just would try to take better care of myself as well. My mom had Parkinson's disease and it effects their mind too sometimes. You are drawn into their world. My nerves were shot as well as my body. I have had back surgery, knee surgery and will probably walk on a walker the rest of my life because of a botched up knee surgery. Just try to take it easy and relax if you can and that vacation sounds like it would be a great idea once you have some time to recoup some. Will pray for you because I know how hard and the toll it takes on you. |
I agree with everyone else, moist heat is the best. The best heat pack I have found is one you make at home. Wet a folded washcloth and put it in a ziplock bag (opened). Microwave it for 1-2 minutes. (I have a smaller microwave so I do two minutes). Close the ziplock when it's finished and wrap in a towel. It will stay warm for a long time! |

I am so very sorry that you have a pain in your neck. Stress will do that to you, so will sleeping the wrong way, and sometimes just a sneeze. Moist heat rocks. So does a good Chiropractor that does hand manipulations. Perhaps a massage. |
My mother-in-law told me many years ago. Put uncookied rice in a tube sock and put it in the microwave. It holds the heat very long. Put it on your neck. It works!! |
Have you tried heat? You poor thing - neck pain can stop you cold. That uncooked rice thing? Such a good idea! I learn something here like 10x a day... |
I feel your pain. I know how this can be & also tried the Ibuprofen. For me, it seems to come and go & unfortunately, has been occuring for about 6 months. I finally discussed with my doctor on last visit & he sent me for xrays. Will find out soon if anything shows up. I cannot find the "perfect" pillow for sleeping, but unsure if it's because of my neck or, if that is the cause of the pain? My neck pain first appeared during problems with kidney stone & stress. Hope yours gets better quickly! |
I would try some yoga exercises. Here is a youtube video which depicts some |
I think you should get a massage to release some of the stress you are holding and then your neck will straighten out itself. Hugs. |
Every time I think it is getting better and I'm more relaxed, something comes up regarding my mother's estate, family, home, etc. to just make it all worse again. I'm sure it will get better with rest, if I can just find the time to try and get it. Wow! Some great ideas. The rice in a sock idea is one that I have used to warm my mother's finger up before testing her blood sugar and also on my cat's ears before testing the blood sugar. It works. I'll try it. I've just been using cold therapy because the doctor recommended it 2 weeks ago. I'll try the moist heat and icy hot. It just dawned on me that my previous GP (who was more into homeopathic medicine and recommended vitamins more than any other doctor I've ever used) recommended using something people use on horses called ABSORBINE, Veterinary Liniment Gel, topical analgesic. It contains botanical extracts and speeds natural healing. It's a spearmint scent. I found it at a tractor supply store a few years ago. Just forgot about it. Heck, I'll try every idea I've read! I think I've had it around 3 weeks now. Everyone has been so helpful. Thank you. |

Did you see Dr. Oz on his show the other day with the piece of pasta and ice? It stiffened the pasta and it became hard. He used heat on the pasta and it became pliable and soft. He said our muscles are like that pasta. Ice is usually just for trauma and to reduce damage, though it is good for some nerve pain. Moist heat will loosen up your neck and shoulder muscles and allow good blood flow to rush oxygen and other nutrients from the blood into your muscles, relaxing them and reducing swelling in the process. |

I have always worked for orthopedic surgeons and all 3 recommend moist heat for muscle spasms associated with cricks. |
With all the stress you have been under, it's no wonder your neck is tight and stiff. If the massages are only giving short term relief, you can buy one of those things stuffed with rice - that you heat up in the microwave and leave on your neck. I prefer this to the sock, but the sock is definitely cheaper. A visit to your doc might be in order for some muscle relaxers or just something for stress. You have just been through one of life's most stressful events. I hope you feel better. |

I was converted when an adjustment to my mid-back with one of those spring-loaded pressure thingies instantly relieved crippling pain in my big toe. I still don't understand how it could have worked like that because I KNEW it wouldn't, but going from hobbling around with a cane to swing dancing in a few minutes' time was pretty convincing. |

Tell me about it! When I was 12, I had an uncontrollable twitch in my neck and head (must have been because of pain). My parents took me to every M.D. in town and no one could find the problem. Then they found this chiropractor, bless his soul, who took an x-ray and manipulated my neck and said I had a pinched nerve. I had several treatments of him saying "popcorn" and popping my neck (can't remember how long it took to cure it). All I know is that he was the only one who knew what was wrong. Within no time, I was well. I defend them to this day. I could sure use him now to help get rid of this crick in my neck! |
