When discussing today how to discuss life in Tallahassee for the new PhD recruits here's the comment I got: "Well Rose can represent the angry South American women that live here." :mad:

First, sorry you are feeling that the guys in class don't treat you with respect. You mentioned not being invited...why would you want to?

Maybe they it's their way of "showing" you that they DO respect you, with a little teasing:rolleyes: ODD, i know, but we are referring to males.

I really don't see anything disrepectful in the above comment.
You mentioned your age and theirs...if you plan on working in a man's environment, you'll learn it could be much worse than a little teasing...
SUCK IT UP , it's not the bad:) STOP LETTING THEM TEAR YOU DOWN...take what others said and give them a dose of it!!!

I wonder why they think you are angry? See.. when you are hurt and quite they think you are angry? hmmm they need to take a class on personal comunication!!

Sorry, but it's offensive to depict me as an angry South American woman, when I'm not even from South America. My family is from Cuba and I was born here. Cuba is not in South America. That is an ignorant comment to make.

Just like with dogs, repetition is key. ;) He may not intend to offend you as he does. But awkward silence is a great teacher.

Have you heard this Aesop's fable?

The North Wind and The Sun.


The North Wind boasted of great strength. The Sun argued that there was great power in gentleness.

"We shall have a contest," said the Sun.

Far below, a man traveled a winding road. He was wearing a warm winter coat.

"As a test of strength," said the Sun, "Let us see which of us can take the coat off of that man."

"It will be quite simple for me to force him to remove his coat," bragged the Wind.

The Wind blew so hard, the birds clung to the trees. The world was filled with dust and leaves. But the harder the wind blew down the road, the tighter the shivering man clung to his coat.

I think it was a combination of my silence, and a bystander not involved suggesting that he apologize. Rather than apologizing directly, he tried to justify his actions. But yes, I think the winning strategy is to simply not say anything at all.

He will probably never apologize. Hopefully at some level, he'll notice those kinds of comments fall flat, and he'll stop making them.

Yeah, until then hopefully I'll keep trying to thicken up my skin :) I appreciate your thoughtful replies and concern...it means a lot.
