I don't understand where people get the idea that Americans are the rudest people in the world (maybe from the French?). Everywhere that I've been to so far people tell me how much they love how polite Americans are. We just let them cut us in line, always apologize when we don't look where we're going and run into them, and usually respond when they ask us a question (in English anyway) Trust me, we are not the rudest people in the world at all, not by a long shot. I've been pushed, shoved, cut in line, yelled at (when I was not in the wrong), flipped off for using my blinker, and then turning the way my indicator light said I would , and not once have I heard an apology, usually they look at me like they're expecting me to apologize for their rudeness. Anways, what she had to say could have been presented better, and she is just making herself look ignorant. I am curious what kind of disiplinary actions are going to be taken against her, if any. |

I agree and disagree. I am glad to see your perspective.. and I really and truly did not mean any offensive in my post. I often wonder what would happen to me if we moved to an non English speaking country. I think when you are older it is harder to learn a second language. I agree it is human nature to gravitate to people who speak your language and are similar- I could see myself being like your mother - but I do love foods of other cultures and like to learn how to prepare. I also think many families moved to usa BECAUSE it was what they either needed to do or HAD to do for their families not because they wanted to leave their homes. I admire families like yours - I hope you feel you have a better life because of your parent's choices. BUT... there is another side... I have had people rude to me because I don't speak Spanish. I used to apologize.. I really don't know what to feel anymore. I have been told I should learn Spanish. I agree to the point it would make me a more "learned" person. It would help me when traveling. Otherwise I find that a bit offensive. I get by.. most people help each other.. I commutate with neighbors with my limited Spanish and their English we have a lot of fun!! Sadly .. I am not very good at learning languages and even worst is learning the "slang" One time I asked a male student (remember I teach food production) if he washed his Huevo -- not a good day  I find by the second or third generation it is not an issue anymore. For example... my dh is second generation Swedish .. only words he knows is "jummin Jimminey" (don't ask ?>????) Like I said before... we all can trace our roots back to another country. But I guess I got a bit off the subject of the op I think there are three issues in this thread A.) What the girl is saying - her message B.) Her right to say what she is saying C.) How she is getting her message across lol-- we could have three different heated threads  My friends alway said I should have been in debate... I can think of several arguments or supportive fact pro and con on each of the above. Sadly some of the subjects are too heated and people get upset if you don't share their views. I alway say three things you should be careful about if you want to keep friends: A.) NEVER tell a woman how to raise her children (or maybe yorkies :D) B.) Religion C.) Politics |

I agree:thumbup: Thank you for saying that!! I have traveled a little bit... the rudest people I have been in contact on my travels have NOT been Americans. I find most Americans are polite, hold doors say hello:p etc... the bigger cities maybe not :( |

anyway.. that is my thoughts |
I don't think UCLA should punish her, first amendment and all that. If they did, there would be lawyers lining up to represent the girl for a big payout. That being said, she IS going to pay for doing this. I predict she will pay a very hefty price for showing the world how stupid she is. Everyone on campus is going to know who she is and she will be shunned. Any potential employer is going to find the video, and it will be difficult to find a job after graduation. Hope she likes flipping burgers. Even though she has freedom of speech, there are consequences. There are rebuttal videos out now. Here is one. And in regards to the OP, that ditz just secured her mediocre future. She has done more harm to herself than any dean could ever accomplish, and it will haunt her for the rest of her life. |

I just think a lot of people spend too much time relating experiences about a specific "type" of person being rude to them, when in fact it's just people who are rude. There is no blanket race/ethnicity that is prejudiced against another group. There are just people that are rude in general, and this is what I wish people would pay more attention to, instead of trying to create a typology or "trend" of what "type" of person is saying what. |

I like that you shared your experience, that is a way of understanding different experiences!!!! Same way I shared mine. Both the good and the bad. What I don't like about the youtube video... it has opened a lot of wounds and doors to more hateful speech . IDK maybe it is needed but it makes me uncomfortable After this last week on Yt.. I don't want to ever see hear or say the word RUDE again.. |

When it reached its destination, added to the message was "mailed by a rude New Yorker" Now, from personal experience I did find one thing I heard about New Yorkers to be true - they are crazy drivers! My New York friend scares the living daylights out of me when she drives. We would be going down US1 and she would realize we had passed the place we wanted to be. Now if I had been driving, I would have found a place where I could turn around, but Harriet just did a U-turn right on US1 - which is a fairly busy road. She couldn't understand why I was clinging on to the door strap for dear life.:D |
