While searching for my new haircut, I've stumbled upon a few beauty/fashion/handbag forums, and wow these women are so show offy and materialistic. Is it just me that is slightly put off by this? is it just those forums allow or encourage that type of posting? Especially with the times, I find many of these women are really flashing their cash around. And I have found even though they have money, and buy all the latest fashions, they still don't really have any style. There, I said it. *ducks*

Another reason why I love YT, you guys don't make me feel inadequate if I don't have a new designer something or other every week.

lol....I know exactly what you're saying. I was on one of those forums last Christmas looking for information on a Coach bag. It took all of about 10 seconds of reading before I left to find my information elsewhere. Regardless of the wealth or lack of, those with the most class don't have to "brag" about their possessions.

All the $$ I could have for designer items is spent spoiling my kids:D.....I get much more satisfaction from those purchases than I ever did buying an expensive bag.

We are allowed to talk about other forums as long as they are not dog forums.


You made me feel inadequate, when you said you could easily spot a knock-off from the real thing. I can't even spot the real thing, when it has the label on it, and it's in the store! By the way, I can' imagine the sort of woman who lives on that forum, of course, others will probably have jokes about people who live on dog forums. :p I'm kind of a reality TV nut, and two shows that feature that sort of women you describe are, My Big Friggin Wedding, and any of the Housewives shows from Bravo. I've known women, who've had very little money, and used it wisely with a sense of style, and others like Mariah Carey, who poor dear, really needs a stylist. I mean she really looks like she spends less than $100.00 a year on clothes! I think you can learn a lot from that type of forum, like, what not to be! :D

on this handbag forum, there is a member who posts her daily outfits for for her "fans", every day is a different designer outfit, and I'm not talking True Religion jeans and LV handbags, I'm talking full on Herve Leger bandage dresses and Hermes bags (do you guys know how much a Hermes bag costs? makes LV look like chump change), like who wears a HL bandage dress on like a Tues? Where is this woman going? Obviously she likes the attention. Her thread was 90+ pages and going strong.

then there was the "I can grow my hair down to my knees" forum. Hair that long is kinda gross isn't it?

Talk about feeling inadequate... I don't even know any designer names. The only ones I know about is Coach... after that, I'm clueless. I choose to spend my money wisely and I buy clothes and other items on sales and clearance. I'm content with it too! :D Even if I had the money to pay for designer things, I may buy a couple items here and there, but I'd rather use the money for a good cause or put it in my bank account for my education and my family.

I don't think there are any forums for my Tar-Jay fashions...LOL.

Oh no it's her whole entire self, head and all. And yes she does "poses". She also does bespoke lingerie. :rolleyes: I mean she sells it. I don't think they are preworn though :sidesplt: and at least she is not a plus size girl like our friend from ebay.

I like cute things, I will even pay good money for nice things. Theres this Hello Kitty purse that I would love that's $50 but I just can't bring myself to buy it. I would be to paranoid to ever use it, I can't imagine spending 300-500 on a purse. I don't have any fashion accesories that cost that much. I would rather go on vacation or out to dinner a few nights. I just don't get it, these purses don't even have pockets half the time! I guess I go for function over fashion but I dont care what people think, I wear what I like. If anything I'd dress my yorkies in brand names before I'd dress myself in them!

I just cannot imagine being on a forum that talks about purses and stuff like that all the time. This is a brand new thought to me. Glad you are here with us on YT. :D

Yeah I have been on a couple of those forums before but only visited 1-2 times.
I have a bit of a Juicy Couture obsession, and maybe buy an item once every couple of months. But then I still live at home with my parents, and even though I do give them rent money I dont have any bills to pay yet. :)
I went on the websites because I like to have a closer look at a certain bag that im thinking of buying or whatever, but when I went on I saw one women had a collection of about 40 LV handbags!! :eek::eek: I thought OMG where do you WORK?!?! & to be honest all of the bags looked more or less the same...
Most of them have no worries about spending over £700 on a bag and the website I was on most of them were strutting about with £1k bags! :eek:
And to be perfectly honest most of the bags wernt even that nice, and they were not something I would buy even if they were only £5.. makes me think they are only buying it for the label rather then what the bag is like.
They do make you feel very poor LOL. :p

Okay, this is more than I would have ever imagined, it's so bizarre it almost makes me wonder if the designers are helping her because they want to create a little buzz. I mean a designer can make big bucks selling to the rich, but the rich are off to the next new thing, and a designer can really do well by selling to the masses. Think Jesey Shore and credit cards.

I have a couple friends that have spent upward of $500 on a purse. I could never justify that expense! Not to mention that I don't even find the purses that nice.

I won't spend more than $50 on a purse, and that is on the high end.

Personally I'd rather buy a $20 knockoff and give the rest to charity then spend $1000 on a purse.

I do admire the quality of certain products. Seams that are sewn perfectly, and quality materials. I just think for some people it's not about the quality, it's about the label. I've got to say, that because a really great purse will last for years, I'll spend more than $50.00. :D

I completely agree with you. I like quality materials and workmanship, which is why I'm willing to pay more for a purse. My threshold however is $100. Most people (in my opinion) pay for the label, which explains why coach purses are so popular. The HUGE C's ALL over the purse screams "hey this is a coach purse that I just paid $200 for." Don't get me wrong, I think a lot of Coach items are high quality, however the nicer leather purses that I think are nice are in the $300-500 range which interestingly enough do not have the C's plastered all over them...All in all, I think everyone has their own personal threshold and their own preferences and while some do not acquire any utility from a purse (or other items) others (like myself) really enjoy the art of creating an outfit, finding bargains, and the occasional splurge on things you absolutely cannot find for cheap (for example a well-structured coat). When I see a single piece (whether a purse, shorts, jacket etc) I automatically create a picture of an outfit in my head as well as how it will fit. I rarely have to try anything on, I can usually look and something and just know how it will fit. I love all kinds of different fabrics (rayon, silk, wool, etc). Anyways as usual I am rambling. Point is, I think fashion is fun and exciting and not only do I enjoy the hunt (for that wonderful bargain!) but I enjoy the feel and look of different fabrics, colors, and structures, and I especially love randomly complimenting women on the street on their outfits. They're always taken aback and extremely appreciative, you can tell it really brightens up their day!!

Couldn't agree with you more, I never cared for the "C" fabric. I thought Coach went downhill when that came out.

No I really doubt any designers are helping her. There are tons of celebrities they can give or loan their stuff to (who have a much bigger following than she does), why would they give it to a "regular" person on some random forum?

But yes, most designers nowadays are marketing to the masses. Think back in the 80s and before, when only old ladies carried around LVs and Chanels. Now every tween thinks they deserve one if they are anybody at their school. :rolleyes: Really takes away the specialness of having a luxury good. Doesn't really seem so luxurious when everyone has one. Part to blame would be the knockoff market, but think about it, all the big designers really started pushing their product to the "regular" person say about 10 or so years ago. No one could afford these items, so the knockoff market came in to fill the gap. (much like puppymillers huh?) Now the luxury companies are all in a twist about knockoffs out there, when it was the knockoff market that really made people want these brands even more. It was basically free advertising for them, and realistically, people that didn't care about carrying a fake wouldn't EVER splurge on the real thing anyway, so it's not like they were really losing any customers.

and to top it off, the quality is not the same anymore.

I like to put together outfits too, and love to find a deal, most my shopping is done at thrift shops. But my point is, this woman buys all these luxury items and has all the latest styles, yet she has no personal style. Money can buy you nice clothes, but it can't buy you style.

I agree. My large Dooney Bourke that I bought over 20 years ago still looks almost new. It was my daily purse for many years.

I will pay for quality in clothes that I can wear for years (I don't care if things are in style or not. :p).

The only time I cared about a label was when I was in junior high and wanted a pair of Calvin Klein jeans. :D

Yup, I saw a few avatars with 5, 6, 7 lv bags, or plenty of avatars with pics of their Louboutins. I think the most I ever spent on a bag was $200 and that was at an outlet mall. It was a Dior bag and this was about 6 yrs ago when I was doing really well, and I still got a bit lightheaded I spent that much. And how many times did I use it? ZERO. :thumbdown

While it's totally fine to buy a bag that is a take off or knock off of the style of a bag, never buy a counterfeit knockoff bag. Those types of bags are made with dirty money, and you don't want to support people that do that sort of thing.
