I think the grogginess depends on the sleep aid. Ambien leaves your system after 5 hours, so that shouldn't make her groggy. Everyone is different, though. |

Ambien never makes me feel drugged. If I don't remember if I've taken it, I honestly can not tell the difference, and I will only know because I can not sleep at all if I forget to take it. I usually try to take it by 9pm so that it is more out of my system by the time I have to drive. I rarely go to sleep before midnight, so it does not make me feel sleepy. The reason why it helps me is that I sleep more soundly when I take it. I have just never been someone that has slept really restfully, even as a child. Before I thought about the driving issue and before I started to really take it, my husband encouraged me to take at 2 a.m. on nights when I couldn't sleep, and I was up by 4:30 or 5:00 getting ready for work, and I was not feeling the effects of it. I function fairly well on little sleep if I get more on the weekends, but the migraines are my big worry if I go too long without sleep. Once that happens, if I don't wind up getting sleep, I can't break the migraine cyle. I know Ambien affects some people negatively. For me, I get up several times a night, even with taking Ambien. I have occasionally, but very rarely forgotten a conversation I had until reminded of it, but I think it's more a reaction to be exhausted more than anything else. Sometimes I reread something I've read and notice I've spelled something differently than I normally would have, but I often work late into the night, even with taking it, and it has no effect. When Ashley was experiencing her insomnia and pacing until we realized she had CCD, I was up with her all the time and completely alert. The benefit of taking it is a more restful sleep for me when I finally do sleep. Ann, please take care of yourself and try to relax and sleep. I am so sorry that you are in pain. |
I have lived with Mirgraines for awhile now. They started in my mid-30s and the only thing that I have found that really helps is vomiting. I have been doing research as to why, and am having trouble finding any. There have been studies dealing with the vascular pressure but nothing concrete. Would love to know why......:confused: I find that I can sense them coming on, and when I do I take an Excederin Migraine and let it dissolve under my tongue, gross but effective: and then continue this as often as the bottles directions allow. Sometimes it helps, and sometimes it does not. |
Gosh, so many of us with sleep issues too :(! Ambien doesn't make me feel groggy either (I take the regular Amb, not the CR - which has an extended release). It works pretty good for me -- or, at least, better than the 20 others meds they've tried for my insomnia :rolleyes:. I have tried melatonin, QSilv, and it just didn't change anything...I gave it a good 6mth trial, and no difference. I've also tried allllll of the "Pams" for sleep...lorazepam, flurazepam, diazepam - if it's a Pam, they've tried it for me. They didn't work much at all for sleep - but also left me feeling incredibly 'down' the next day - like I couldn't even function, just stared flatly off into space. My sleep study had about 43 unprovoked awakenings (these are the non-apnea events) -- so, I'm just a really crappy sleeper, and have been for about 20 years now. Some people's sleep studies show 300 awakenings though, so mine isn't even that bad. On the dreams - OMG!! Mine are like movies...I can't even describe it and how vivid they are! The other night, I dreamt I had to fly a helicopter even though I didn't know how...very scary. I dream about losing my fur babies almost every night; those are the worst. Lunesta may be worth a go for me...is it true that it's super expensive, even with insurance? |

Wow on the insomnia issues. I don't suffer from that, fortunately. DH has allergies and does have apnea-like occurrences sometimes. We've found for him that stopping things like Claritin have actually improved his sinus situation and sleep. Sounds contradictory I know, but in his case the histimines were drying him out too much and the inflammation / snoring / apnea was the result. By minimizing Claritin he is much better. Plus we found out that Claritin artifically inflates your cholesterol - a side effect he also experienced. We found along the way that he is allergic to red pepper (which is in everything now) and if he does ingest red pepper the apnea-like symptoms appear for a solid night or two. His sleep is awful when this occurs (and then so is mine LOL...) My headaches are always on the left rear of my head, at the base of my skull and radiate down my neck and up into the left side of my brain. They literally incapacitate me at times, and if it is a severe one it can be multiple days before it is totally gone. I've had some success managing them with diet (no msg), eliminating all sodas (minimizing sugars and chemicals), minimizing coffee (which I then increase when I get one). Further I use a saline nasal spray (non-medicated OTC) twice daily to keep my nasal passages from drying. Don't know why but this also seems to help! |

Anne - me again - after I just posted I read the whole thread and saw you have tried trazadone - I'm sorry it didn't work for you then but you may want to try it one more time. I find it really does help and these days I'm under tons of stress. Been on other sleep aids (Ambien - Lunesta and the Ambien Cr and found going back on the trazadone really worked better for me. Wish I could help on the migrains. With other medications you may be taking it may be worth another shot so you can at least sleep. I'd love to take my own advise but these days - I'm surprised I don't have migrains......hearing about them makes me feel so bad for those who suffer from them. I need to write you again....You've been such a help to me during the last 5 months and I worry about you! |

Ann, I wonder if you should try Elavil (Amitriptyline) its an old antidepressant that's mostly used for sleep now. Also, some use it to help with migraine prevention. |
