International Calling Cards?
 
Does anyone use them? Do they have good rates? Would it be better to have a land line with international calling?

I'm so confused about this whole international calling. I want to call my BF who is in Bolivia but I want to get as much for my $. :) He called me last Monday, and we were really happy to finally speak. He spent what I thought was too much for a super short (less than 15 mins) conversation. I'm hope he gets internet soon, then we can skype. :)

Can you get an International plan for your cell phones?
I used to use a calling card for an old BF, but it was still in the U.S. I got them at Costco. I think it was 6 hrs for $20. I can't remember though.

I don't think I can. I know my mom has an unlimited calling plan to Mexico, but I doubt it extends all the way down south of the equator.

I'll check out Costco though. :)

Have you taken a look at google voice? They may have very cheap rates. I'll help you research it in the morning. https://www.google.com/voice

My mom and dad use the international calling cards all the time to call Italy..they are WAYYYY cheaper than a landline. My parents had the international plan and figured out it was cheaper to use the calling card. I think the rates on the calling card are anywhere from 2-4 cents a minute. And the minutes dont expire if you dont use them for a while.

Do you know how it works? I looked at it but I'm confused. I'm not computer smart and if it isn't completely dumbed down for me, sometimes I just don't get it. :p

Yes I know exactly how it works and it's very simple. Here are the rates https://www.google.com/voice/rates

It looks like there are several different rates for several locations in Bolivia.

If google is $.09 per minute (and if that's the cheapest we can find), i'm happy to help you get started with it. I use google voice daily for my business.

It's actually $0.15 a min. He gave me his cell phone number. It's interesting that the cell phones are more expensive. I should probably ask for his home number instead.

That sounds expensive. You should use the home number. I think it's $.09 then? Still sounds like a lot but I don't see it cheaper anywhere else.

There are so many choices, but I'm concerned about getting the best deal. Who isn't right? :) Anyway, there are calling cards with a lower rate but they have additional fees. I remember when my mom and dad use to use calling cards to call Mexico, and often times cards would advertise a certain amount of mins for a set price, but they always were given less time to talk due to the hidden fees. Connection fee, weekly usage fee, etc.
Does google voice have any of that?

i have no idea if there are hidden fees but it looks cheaper than anything else.

It does look cheap! If I get his home number, it doesn't have his city listed as a location. Calling his cell is $0.14 a min.

I think I'm going to lean towards google voice. I don't know the other company, and so far google has been my go to for most of what I use the internet (searches, email, etc.).

Plus, I like that if I sign up I can use a general number which I can use for work. There are a lot of people who require a number to contact me, but I'm not comfortable giving them my personal cell number.

I would tend to agree. It's a very reliable service with no hidden fees. Sign up for a google voice account and pick your number. You can even use words to pick a number. You can type in "kaji" or "yorkie" or something and see if they have it. Let's see how far you get, and I'll help you along the way with setting it up. It's simple once you get used to it.

It's a private phone number with free voicemail.

I also forgot to ask if I need a webcam to access any of the features or some sort of microphone. Once I get started, I'm sure I won't ask as many questions.

Makes no difference. Do you have a google account? You'll want to create one first. You can log into your account online to check voicemail. Or, you can opt to get a text message or email with a transcription of the message! Or, you can dial your gv (google voice) number from your registered phone to get your messages.

You can also text message for free by logging online and typing your messages. I believe it's free internationally. Do you have an IM client (aim, yahoo, msn) where I can walk you through it?

noooooooo...... you are going to your computer. going into your GV account. You click a button that says call. You enter the number you want to call and click CONNECT. It then rings your phone and connects you to the person.

It'll take a bit to get used to but you will love it. Make sure you take a look at your voice settings to setup a voicemail, determine what phone to ring, etc.

Oh. On the left menu at the bottom- click where it says add credit. You can add in $10 i believe via a credit card. See where it says calling credit?

not sure what you are referring to. you should just be able to click Call, enter the number to call, and select your personal phone that you want to use.
