Where were you on 9/11? My wife was down in Phoenix on Business and could not make it home for another week. I was home, got up a bit late, turned on the news, and thought I was watching some Action Movie. Took a bit to sink in that it was the real thing. Now someone wants to build a ......near the site. I will not even get started. |
me too I was going for some breakfast at the hospital, someone said, "did you hear a plane hit the building?" We ran to a TV. I was standing there when the 2nd one hit and my heart sank. I knew then how my parents felt when they heard of Pearl Harbor. But I saw it with my own eyes. :( One of the Doctors on staff lost a nephew at the Pentagon. 26 yrs. |
I was at work in a nursing home as an R.N. Was helping the C.N.A.s feeding residents when one resident who was always glued to the television started yelling and crying. Everyone in the room looked at the television and saw that dreaded smoke cloud coming from the first tower and we watched in horror as the second one hit. I will always remember that day and the faces of those veterans and older ladies tears streaming down their faces. :(:(:( |
I am watching the ground Zero memorial now. Glad we can take time to remember. We sometimes forget what is important, but then again, everyone has their own thoughts and experiences. |
I was at work in an elementary school lunchroom and we happen to have a very large screen TV and we were able to watch everything. My husband was in the Richard Russell Federal building in Atlanta, Georgia, they were immediately on lockdown. He did not arrive home until late that night. No cell phone calls were allowed.:flag42: |
This is really going to show my young age! I was in 6th grade, or maybe 7th. We were in the media center, in the computer lab. They hadn't told any of us kids what was going on. A teacher came out and told someone their mom was there to pick them up from early dismissal. Then another. Then my mom. I was like, what is going on? When I got to the front of the school, all of these parents were there, and some were crying. My mom was like, "Brittany, these people are dropping bombs in NYC" or something, because at that point, I remember some rumors were that was what had happened, they had dropped them from the plane or something. Anyways, I just remember being terrified, especially when it hit so close to home (DC- Pentagon). |
I was sitting in my living room. The little boy from across the street ran across to our house and told us what happened. We turned on the news and saw what happened. I remember we were in shock. |
We will always remember where we were on this traggic day. I was in the office and heard a co-worker say "OMG...a plane hit one of the twin towers." I was in shock. A gut feeling told me this was no accident. I pulled cnn.com and then watched in horror and disbelief as the 2nd plane hit. I immediately called my husband to tell him I loved him and to tell him what had just happened. Minutes later my manager walked around and told everyone to take the rest of the day off and to go be with our families. I rushed out the door to pick up my daughter from daycare and then ran home to rejoin my husband who has also left work. We spent the entire day at home together. Our hearts ached then for those that died and their families and still does today when we remember this tragic event that should never have occured. I am saying prayers today for all those that have passed from this tragic event and their families.... |
We lived on the coast of Texas and I remember fighter jets patrolling-they passed overhead about every 30-45 minutes. I remember feeling like the world had tilted on it's axis that day:( My thoughts and condolances are with all the families who lost someone and a big Thank You to all who serve or have served this country! |
I was still living in Germany. A friend came by and asked: "Did you see the pictures from New York"? First I thought she was there on vacation and wanted to show me pics. Then she explained, I turned the tv on and couldn't believe it; I still have the images in my head. My heart goes out to the victims and their families, the fire fighters, police and army forces. |
I was on my way back home because I forgot the pool guy was coming to close up the pool when I heard it on the radio. When I finally got home, I told my son to put on the TV only to then remember ........... Joanne ..........Joanne works there - OMG!!! Calling my daughter at college - she tells me - "Mom Jamie's brother Kevin is missing too". We hear Mrs. Brennan's son the firefighter is also missing, and Nick's nephew too. I lost so many that day and our lives have never been the same since. Joanne my thoughts are always always with you. I miss you so much. RIP |
I was home watching the news and suddenly there was breaking news. My heart was in my throat seeing the first tower burning and then when the second one got hit live on TV I was like "what the heck?" When the Pentagon got hit I just fell apart not knowing what was happening. Then I went over to my Mom's home to be with her. I will never forget this day and all of the heart break of people looking for their loved ones. It was and still is too sad. God bless all those who were lost that day and those who continue to lose their lives and have many health problems. Amen |
I was at home. I was recovering from gallbladder surgery and I was on pain medication. I was in bed and turned the tv on and the first tower had just been hit like a couple of minutes before. I remember thinking I was dreaming or the drugs were playing tricks on me. It was so strange. My boss called a few hours later to let me know they were closing the facility for the day. Our headquarters are in NYC and they basically closed all of our facilities everywhere! I was glued to the tv since I was bedridden anyway for days. I went to NYC for the first time four years ago and I think my friend and I were about a block or so from Ground Zero and I couldn't really see anything yet, but I just started crying and there were so many people there and everyone was crying and silent. It was the day after a memorial of the fireman's wall. It's something I will never forget my entire life. Seeing things on tv and then seeing the site and the magnitude of the size of it all is overwhelming! |
My heart goes out to everyone who lost a loved one that horrid day. I was home and I just put on the TV. I actually saw the second tower go down. Something I will never forget. I knew my kids were safe at school, so I left them there. Suddenly I hear about the Pentagon. I was scared and I remember thinking that we are being attacked. Where will they attack next???? I knew my kids would know someone that lost a mom or dad that terrible day. I just think of those police men and fire fighters that ran in there to help. My God!!! What a terrible shame. |
I don't think anyone will ever forget that day. I was at work and we started hearing about it on the radio. We kept up with it by radio and news sites on the web. I went home for lunch and saw the second tower go down. The towers, along with the Pentagon and the plane in Pennsylvania was just shocking. On a side note, 9/11 is my youngest son's, and also my step-daughter's birthday, so we focus on that, but can never forget the loss of all those souls on that day. Side note #2: Last month was the 41st anniversary of Hurricane Camille and the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. There were memorial services here on those days honoring the hundreds that perished in those storms. We'll never forget those days or those that were lost but most here feel the best way to honor the dead is to rebuild, carry on and live life well. |
This is REALLY going to show how young I am haha. I was in 3rd grade. I actually remember the day perfectly, even though I was so little. I was in my classroom and school had just started. My elementry school was preschool - 3rd grade. Because we were so young, they didn't make any announcements over the PA system as to not upset us. But I do remember that my teacher got a phone call from the office and started crying. After she composed herself she took us into the corner of the room, closed to blinds, and locked the door (in retrospect, I realize that the school was in lockdown). We had NO idea what was going on, but figured we were just having a 'fun' day. My teacher read to us all day, and she let us color. I remember we were all laughing because one by one everyone was being called down to the office to be signed out of school, and we had no idea why. I didn't get signed out. My parents were at a funeral that day. They decided it was best for us to stay in school because that was probably the safest place for us to be (and you could see the smoke from the towers in our house, and they wanted to find out as much as they could before having to explain it to us). I remember that my aunt was on a business trip, and due to return home to Newark airport that morning, so for a few hours we had no idea if she was alive or not. She was fine, her plane had been grounded. But that was really terrifying. |
I was preparing to go to Houston Hobby for my flight back to NJ. (I used to travel between the two states.) My sister called in a panic....fearful that I was already in the air. I put the television on just as a replay was on with one of the planes hitting the tower. It was so shocking, almost like something from a horror movie. Just unimaginable. Only the most depraved of human beings could do such a thing. :( I stayed in Houston for another week, and then returned to what was then home. Like most, I chose not to let cowards ruin my way of life and continued to live my life as normal. |
I was at home when my husband called to tell me what had happened with the first plane. I turned on CNN just in time to see the second plane hit. I kept my oldest 2 home from school that day because rumors were flying that San Diego, with all it's military bases, was a target. Spent a good deal of the morning listening to the planes being deployed from the air bases around us. I stayed glued to the tv all day until it was time to go to a doctor's appointment for my youngest. We found out that day that she had an ASD. I stopped on the way home from that appointment to buy a new flag to fly out front. |
I was at work and my Mom called to tell me a plane had hit the World Trade tower. I thought how sad, thinking it was like a small plane that had run into the building, Then all the department heads were called into the VP's office to tell us what had happened and that if anyone had relatives in it they could go home. I was in charge of a call center and the calls just slowed down to nothing as everyone was glued to the news. The company set up TV's in the cafeteria so people could go watch it. I didn't want to see it until I was at home, not sure why. My Bosses dtr was there and he couldn't get a hold of her the whole day. He was a wreck and he finally got word she was ok at the end of the day. Such a horrible day. |
I was getting ready for work and turned on the TV just as all of this was happening. I taught preschool. I wanted to stay home, but I was the teacher so that option was out. Every one of my preschoolers were there that day. Weird day....very sad. |
I was working at a MD office at the time. The announcement came on the radio and I stopped what I was doing to be sure that I heard correctly....There were no TVs so the first video glimpse I got was after work at 5pm! I was able to see pictures on the internet but no news broadcasts at work. What a sad and memorable day. I'll never forget those images. I also remember the disturbing video on MSNBC of people jumping to their death which was then later pulled because I never saw it again. Very disturbing...My thoughts go out to anyone with friends or family lost that day. |
This has been a wonderful thread. I suggest that people let it STAY that way. :) |
Steve, thanks for starting this Thread. We should all reflect on this sad day. I was delivering for Fedex and all of a sudden airplanes from all around started landing. They were flying very low and it scared me to death. |
I was home alone I had dinner at Windows of the World Saturday night. Came home Sunday from spending the summer working at the Trade Center. I was watching Mark Haines on CNBC when he was interrupted by the news and I was glued to the TV for days. I am glad to be alive. |

I was at home and had just put the kids onto the school bus. It was then that I finally turned on the Today Show and Matt and Katie were talking about the plane hitting the first tower. Not really sure what was happening at this point they talked back and forth about the possibilities of what was going on. Speculating it might have been a horrific accident. The image of the burning tower in the background. This is the part that I will NEVER forget~A plane came into the live picture in the background and slammed into the second tower. Matt said to Katie this is an act intentional act of terror (or something along those lines) we are at war. :( I felt sick and just sat there watching as they replayed the second crash several times. Then I felt panic that my husband was in downtown Chicago and possibly in danger. My two oldest were in school but Megan hadn't gotten onto the school bus yet so I kept her home with me. I was one of those mom picking up my kids but the school didn't want to let me take them out. They felt I was over reacting to the situation. That afternoon I could see and hear the fighter jets flying over our house. All the neighbors came out when there was a BOOM as they flew over. I just remember watching and crying all day for all the people that had lost their lives. Just not able to comprehend the amount of hatred that a group of people could have toward the United States to cause so much pain and terror to so many. Steve~this was a great thread and I appreciate that you stated it so that we could all remember those that lost their lives that day. I am very thankful to all the members of the Armed Services that have given so much to keep us safe while being in harms way. So have given their lives while others have given their health to serve and protect. Thank you! :flag: |

I totally agree! Today is a day that we need to show respect for our country, our military and most of all those that have lost their lives on that day 5 years ago. |
