Its VERY sad.. I have teenage daughters (foster) and one of them has severe self esteem issues. She wants so badly to be like the "girls in the magazines". I have told her its all fake and even pulled up photoshop videos on youtube of showing how to airbrush pictures... its just sick... they aren't even creating realistic bodies!

I remember having self esteem issues because growing up I started getting curvy around 7th grade. Took me until I was 18 to realize, curves are perfect, no one really wants to be stick thin, and men go after a curvy girl before one that has the body of a pre-teen...No offense to those women who are able to eat anything they want without gaining an ounce, some of my hostility is that I have to eat healthy to maintain a good weight, and you people can eat a case of doughnuts, and possibly lose some weight.

Yeah, it's just sick! I talk to my 15 year old daughter all the time about how fake all those celebrities are, as she struggles to keep weight off and feels fat sometimes (compared to them, almost anyone seems fat ) I worry for the young girls that have no one to talk to about this stuff and that want to be like their favorite lollipop look alike

Lol, my lollipop look alikes that I wanted to be were the Olsen twins, and look at how they turned out! Is it still Paris Hilton for the young teens or someone else? Miley Cyrus would be a good one, she isn't stick thin, at least the last I've seen of her she wasnt. But who knows...I wish we would stop placing so much emphasis on being thin just like the celebrities and just be happy with who we are, find the weight that we look and feel good in and just be content with life. Damn you Hollywood!! You make teenage life so much harder...

The airbrushed picture just looks stupid.. It looks like the body of an alian! not natural at all.
She looked lovely in the before picture anyway, so anyone who feels she needs to be airbrushed needs their eyes tested.

point them toward Christina Hendrix (from MadMen) she is beautiful, curvy and a size 14.

Maybe Hollywood is finally "getting" it.

The runway models will always be stick figures as long as the designers use them as the "norm" which we all know they are not.

OMG yes, and ALIEN, that is what she looks like in the "after" pic I couldn't put my finger on it, thanks for that observation Now I know!

It's just awful that these people do things like this to our youth (it happens to boys too, with the chiseled abs and airbrushed faces of male stars)

PREVALENCE
It is estimated that 8 million Americans have an eating disorder – seven million women and one million men
One in 200 American women suffers from anorexia
Two to three in 100 American women suffers from bulimia
Nearly half of all Americans personally know someone with an eating disorder (Note: One in five Americans suffers from mental illnesses.)
An estimated 10 – 15% of people with anorexia or bulimia are males

MORTALITY RATES
Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness
A study by the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders reported that 5 – 10% of anorexics die within 10 years after contracting the disease; 18-20% of anorexics will be dead after 20 years and only 30 – 40% ever fully recover
The mortality rate associated with anorexia nervosa is 12 times higher than the death rate of ALL causes of death for females 15 – 24 years old.
20% of people suffering from anorexia will prematurely die from complications related to their eating disorder, including suicide and heart problems
ACCESS TO TREATMENT
Only 1 in 10 people with eating disorders receive treatment
About 80% of the girls/women who have accessed care for their eating disorders do not get the intensity of treatment they need to stay in recovery – they are often sent home weeks earlier than the recommended stay
Treatment of an eating disorder in the US ranges from $500 per day to $2,000 per day. The average cost for a month of inpatient treatment is $30,000. It is estimated that individuals with eating disorders need anywhere from 3 – 6 months of inpatient care. Health insurance companies for several reasons do not typically cover the cost of treating eating disorders
The cost of outpatient treatment, including therapy and medical monitoring, can extend to $100,000 or more
ADOLESCENTS
Anorexia is the 3rd most common chronic illness among adolescents
95% of those who have eating disorders are between the ages of 12 and 25
50% of girls between the ages of 11 and 13 see themselves as overweight
80% of 13-year-olds have attempted to lose weight
RACIAL AND ETHNIC MINORITIES
Rates of minorities with eating disorders are similar to those of white women
74% of American Indian girls reported dieting and purging with diet pills
Essence magazine, in 1994, reported that 53.5% of their respondents, African-American females were at risk of an eating disorder
Eating disorders are one of the most common psychological problems facing young women in Japan.
CELEBRITIES WHO HAVE SUFFERED WITH EATING DISORDERS:
Paula Abdul Justine Batemen Karen Carpenter Nadia Comaneci Susan Dey Jane Fonda Tracey Gold Elton John
Jamie Lynn-Sigler Cherry Boone O’Neill Barbara Niven Alexandra Paul Princess Di Lynn Redgrave Kathy Rigby Joan Rivers Jeannine Turner
Taken from the pages of the DMH website.
I find the state of things for young women today truly sad.

I'm one of those "sticks" you are referring too! However, I'm naturally this way (as I munch on a bag of bbq chips)! My Wii even tells me i'm underweight.

I wish girls these days understood the struggles even I go through to keep weight on. Its not fun either being 'thin'. Its terrible what these magazines and such do to make women look this way. it is NOT attractive!

Agreed, and me too! I used to be fairly overweight and just BIG like a linebacker or something Really, 5'11" and 212 lbs Then I got sick and lost about 85 lbs over the last couple of years and now struggle to maintain 125. It's not easy, as I have stomach issues (undiagnosed diabetes damaged my vagas nerve, google it if you're curious) and sometimes can't keep food down. It sucks just as much as trying to lose weight!

I think that we all need to be more tolerant of each other, especially we women. Too much catiness in the world I hope that you're able to keep your weight on, it IS hard!
