I can't pick up my baby. I went to the dr today and they took some blood. Well... the flow stopped. :p The tech that was drawing the blood started wiggling the needle. It didn't help and then she pinched my arm real hard when put the cotton ball over the "wound." My arms all bruised up and super sore. I can't even reach down to pick up Kaji. :( It's only been an hour and it looks pretty bad. |
Ice it and see if that helps with the bruising. I hate when they can't do a proper blood draw. :( |
She wiggled it, with the needle still inside my arm!!! I know I have sensitive skin, and that nurses have always had a problem inserting needles and finding veins on me. That's nothing new, but for her to wiggle it. She pinched it too. |
Oh, I've never had that happen, did he say why? |
Oh, how horrible! When I was a teenager, I had major surgery to remove a brain tumor. One night the night nurse had to re do the IV, but she did it totally wrong I guess she missed the vein and my whole hand swelled up. I only weighed 80 lbs at the time and my hand looked huge. My surgeon came in early in the morning and was livid to see my hand the way it was...he got someone else in immediately and had the other nurse watch to see how it's done correctly. I'd say your nurse needs to re learn how to take blood.:eyebrow2: |

I have come home from outpatient surgery with both my hands bruised. The nurses couldn't find a place to put the IV so they kept poking and slapping the back of my hand until they found a place to put it. So I wasn't surprised she couldn't find a "good" vein. |

Thanks everyone! My arm feels a lot better today. I can unbend it without hurting too much. :D It does look odd to me. I have this red/purple squiggly mark about 1/2 an inch from where the actual needle went in. I've never seen that happen before. |
You can try to put warm compresses on it to help alleviate the pain. Sound like she blew a vein and it bled under the skin. Its basically a big bruise. Keep an eye on it..I'm not sure about a red squiggly line. If it runs down the top of the actual vein, call your doctor. I always try to drink a lot of water before getting my blood drawn. Being dehydrated doesn't help when they are looking for veins. I too, have horrible veins and they love to go for my hands which I really hate. |

She should not have wiggled it around to that extent, honestly. All that does is traumatize the area and hurt the patient. It's like she was trying to "stab" a vein and, um, ya can't do that. She should have stopped and looked at your other arm. Also, have they ever tried a butterfly draw on you? (it sort of looks like, well, a little butterfly w/ a needle?) Using a butterfly isn't always possible, but it's something to ask about. Ya poor thing, geez! OUCH! |
Does it make a difference if it runs perpendicular to the vein? Look at me using math terms in real life. :p I'm starting to think my bruised arm is my fault. I checked the mail, waiting for my paperwork to come in for my new job. They requested a health check and I flew out the door. I want to start working ASAP. I completely forgot to bring a bottle of water with me. I always carry one! |
Im sorry your hurting. I hope you arm is feeling better soon I hate having blood taken |

Do you mean if the "squiggle" runs perpendicular? I think that's what you're asking. That's okay too, as long as it doesn't travel/grow noticeably longer. She may have also traumatized a near-by smaller vein -or- sometimes when the larger vein is blown (causing blood to pool), the whole area just looks awful for a while, and some other veins may be visible too. The main reason for some concern about a "squiggle" is that one that worsens can be a sign of infection (within the vein) - but this would be so rare with a sterile needle. For infection, you'd watch for redness, pain, heat, and swelling too. |

I really feel your pain! I have the worst veins in the world--not helpful if you've had heart surgery like I have. Before I found out I needed MV repair I tried to give blood while at work. The nurse poked at least twice in each arm before hitting it just right and then my vein blew out. You should have seen the hematoma that developed! I was technicolor and it freaked out my supervisor--so much so she let me have the rest of the day off! Thank God it was Friday!!!:D |

LoALAnna, I didn't know I had difficult veins either! Until I had surgery and I left the hospital with bruised hands and arms. It was just nuts! At least you got the day off when you gave blood. |
Getting blood drawn is my absolute least favorite thing in the world. I refuse to get it taken out of my arm, I always have it out of my hand (the veins in my arm are very hard to find, and i had a few too many similar experiences to the one you had today). I just scheduled a surgery for the end of August, and was informed that I need to get labwork done for it. I am NOT happy haha! Feel better soon. :( hopefully the bruising will go down. Next time youre there shank them with the needle. :p |
I love the way you think Megan! If the nurse didn't know what she was doing, I can't do much worse right? :p |

I once was so excited for a new job that I didn't want to take the time to do the cross-country hunt for my vaccination records. Thus, I was required to have some ridiculous number of shots. I was really thin at the time and the nurse stabbed the needles into my upper arm really hard such that I feared she would hit bone. It took everything within me to control my other arm from punching her or pushing her away. Later found out that everyone disliked this nurse's style of giving shots. :p |
I can see why. Sounds like she was giving you shots like they do in war movies. Have you seen those? Where someone is shot and the medic gives them a shot of morphine. The medic just stabs the wounded soldier in the arm or leg to give them relief. |

*Expletive* *expletive* *expletive* I just got a call from the nurse that drew blood last Friday telling me last weeks samples are no good and she wants to do it again. Would it be rude of me to ask for someone else? My arm is still a little purple, in fact I think the purpleness is spreading, the squiggly line hasn't changed but I don't want her to blow another vein. |
