Steve,
I just saw the hog pics - I was quite impressed to see that big monster you took with a bow. I hope you were in a tree :D - a wild hog in a good mood is a mean sucker I can only imagine what a pissed off wild hog would do.
I sure wish I had a hunter here to bag some bucks. I would love to have a freezer full to feed the furkids. | No, I was standing out in the middle of a woodline, in direct sight. I was waiting, and as luck would have it, he came walking on by. He was 20 yards away, not a hard shot, but he was starting to run. I had to finish him (the squeemish may not read this)
with another arrow, and a 45 ACP round. (I always pack a 45 ACP Colt when in TX, and I am licensed to conceal carry there from my AZ permit) They are just tough. Once, I shot from about 200 yards away and he was running on an angle towards me. It was a good shot, behind the right shoulder. He went down, and immediately got back up and starting running again. Off I went, and then he started running in a circle, and after another 10 minutes, finally dropped. He was still breathing when I got there. Come to discover it was a darn good shot. Through lung, chest, part of the stomach, and blew out his left hip. We discoved this while we were cleaning it. They can take a lot of punishment. That is why they just keep increasing.
I would never hunt with a pack of Catch Dogs. I could not stand to see how cut up they get. I have a friend that is an MD in Argentina who does it. He raises his own, and is a breeder, probably the best in South America. He will lose one Dog on each major hunt, and the others he is stitching up and giving IV's and fluids in the field. Then hunt on horseback, and do use the knife. For them, it is not a hobby, but a way of life. |
