Do You Sew Your Own Clothing? Curious if there is many that sew clothing for themselves. I am looking forward hopefully to get back to sewing for myself. I came across this pattern and absolutely loved it, V1185 | Misses' Jumpsuit | New Sewing Patterns | Vogue Patterns I will make a few changes on this style, one being without the leg bands :) Gosh there are so many beautiful stylish patterns, I've always liked Vogue, mainly because their more detailed. One might say I have been fabric addicted over the years, have a fantastic assortment. Glad too, fabrics have gone up so much in price. This pattern has a loose fit so maybe it won't make one look thin :) anyway that's my way of thinkin :) Thought it would be interesting to see how many others sew for themselves. I was surprised to learn today that they took Home Economics out of all the schools in the City, most likely all of the schools in Calif. Sad to hear that. I doubt if there is any Technical class's within the public schools here in Calif. I noticed that the local Jo Ann's has very limited class's and was told it is difficult to get instructors, that really surprised me. Patti and Jack |
That is a cute pattern. I sew for my furbabies and it is something I really enjoy. I used to sew some for myself, but haven't in years. I see so many cute clothes for our babies and they are so expensive. I thought I can make this and save so much money, plus I enjoy doing it. Jada has an extensive wardrobe of dresses and I need to make more vests for Bogie. The girly dresses are just more fun to make. :) My mom taught me to sew and I also took Home Economics in school. It is sad that they are removing those classes from school.:( |
That jumpsuit is too cute, and looks like it would be comfy this summer! You'll have to post pictures when you finish it, Patti. I sew and used to sew clothing for myself and for my sons when they were babies. Now, I sew for Ruby mostly, also dog beds, etc., and I occasionally sew pillows, drapes or some other home decor item. Honestly with the cost of fabric and cheaply priced clothing available, it just didn't make sense to continue to sew clothing for myself. Now for almost the price of the pattern and thread you can sometimes find the very item you want at some discount store. |

At least with the furbaby clothes it doesn't take much fabric. I buy remnants from a little fabric store in our small town, which is usually enough for Jada a dress and Bogie a matching vest. The cost of patterns is outrageous, at least for the furbaby clothes I can make my own pattern. |

I did a button once, but it fell off. |

If even a button falls off, I have to take it to the tailor, I keep him in business I think... I wish I could sew. :( |

I watched the movie "An Education" last week and I wanted the main character's white trench coat and simple blue sheath dress. If only I were talented enough to sew such things. :) |

I don't like any of the styles now either;) |
My taste is different too than store bought, I like things stylish and more detail. I sewed for Jack, myself and also made ALL the kids school clothing. Taught our daughters at early age to sew, they then sewed for themselves and taught their girls. Have you all noticed the tags on most everything in department store clothing says made in China? I was doing more take backs, I don't care for the fit, styles, nor fabrics used. I had sewn for Baby Blessing when we first got her but gave up, it was tedious sewing, my eye sight couldn't handle it. I figured time I spent sewing for her, could be well used for sewing for myself . I got to know Dear Connie and love her things, I'd rather go visit at her site and let her ConnieDressMyDog.Com do our girls fashions and wardrobe. Bought fabric to make this jumpsuit, also got enough to make Jack a shirt. Label on the bolt didn't say made in China :) pattern was on sale for $3.99 so that was a real savings. The fabric was half price plus an extra 10% off coupon Memorial Day. Hope I can start sewing them next week :) Jadabug, after the kids were grown, having one of their childhood friends out in public come up to me and say, oh, I remember you..... your Sue's Mom that made all her (I like your word trendy) clothing really brought back all those happy sewing hours . I will be honest in saying I had to sew for the kids because we just couldn't afford store bought things, and I think in doing so it helped the girls to carry on with it too, and now theirs do for themselves. What is so great in sewing for ourselves is that we end up with clothing that is unique and in my opinion far outlasts store bought. I feel sad that the schools aren't teaching home economics here in Calif. I was glad our son took wood shop, he recently put a new door on their home plus the door framing, thankful he had the opportunity to learn wood shop in school :) Hugs, Patti and Jack |

Patti that jumpsuit looks stylish and comfortable. I took sewing in HS and spent the whole class trying to thread the darn Bobbin!!lol I think it is great that people can make their own clothes. I agree for dresses, Connie's are the best! Good luck and let us see the finished product. |
I wish I could sew, If I can, I'll do this for myself... http://www.freewebs.com/lovely-neko/83.jpg |

But I seriously admire those who do. |
I wish I could sew. I took Home Ec in high school (it was either that or Shop back then), but I had zero interest in sewing at the time. Now I wish I had paid more attention to that part of the class. |
Very cute jumpsuit! I'm dissapointed to hear about home economics program being eliminated. Home ec. is such a great oppertunity to uncover a skill people don't know they have. I love to sew and find it relaxing but I'm not very good with making clothing, I've done a lot of drapes and valances which I was proud to hang in my home. The clothes I made for the furbutts.......not to good. I just admire all the talent I see on YT, it inspires me to keep trying. Good luck with your jumpsuit and I hope to see a model photo of it! |
Patti...I love that pattern and hope that some day soon, you can find the time to sit down and sew it. And...when you do...we want pictures of you modeling it! :) I hope your neck is feeling better! |
Patti! I love the jumpsuit!! I would love one for myself!!!! I do love the gathered leg bands though :) I've been looking for a 1 piece capri style jumpsuit! Would love to see it when you finish! I'm sure it will be very, very cute...and stylish :D |
2 Attachment(s) I like the jumpsuit too, but you are right, the leg bands... I would either take them out completely or do a bit of a tighter leg, with a leg band that is fitted to the leg and very long, turn it into a cuff, you know? I do sew, i mostly do costumes, and i am usually too busy to sew for myself, but i do sew more for humans than for furbutts. I went to design school. My dad at first was totally against it, but recently he told me he was glad that my fashion design degree went towards something. (That's his idea of a complement LOL) I love vintage style stuff, so I mostly shop in thrift shops, IF I shop at all. I can't stand the mall. Overpriced stuff and everyone knows where you got it. I have a whole folder of designs I want to make, but I'm too busy making stuff for other people that I can never do MY stuff! LOL anyway, here's two costumes I make. From the Sweeney Todd movie, Sweeney and Mrs Lovett. Oh I love corsets too, I make those as well. I love anything late Victorian. |

They look really, really great! You are very talented. :) My youngest daughter buys almost all of her stuff in vintage stores or just thrift stores. She puts stuff together that would look just plain silly on me but somehow it looks great on her. When we had her engagement party she showed up in a little hat with a veil and a vintage dress and managed to look adorable. I have NEVER been able to wear a hat. I look dumb in hats - wish I could. On Memorial Day she had on sailor shorts with a little top and high heeled shoes with an ankle straps and her hair was braided and wrapped around her head. She would love your victorian corsets. |

Hi Patti, You are right - the pant legs need a little help. :) I still sew for myself and for Tink too. Sometimes I have Connie make her a pretty little dress and sometimes I ask Sissy. They both do beautiful work. I used to make my husband's suits, but it got to be too expensive - it was cheaper to buy them ready made and do the alterations myself. I tried to teach my daughter to sew the way my mother did for me, but she wasn't interested. Now that she is on her own, she wants to learn how to hem and alter things. So, we'll start on that this summer. It is sad that one more thing isn't taught anymore. I guess it's just easier to buy something instead of investing your time in it. I know I do that sometimes too - instead of making an outfit - especially if time is short. |

I love the sound of the sailor outfit! Cute! |

Master craftspeople never have time for themselves. :p I have a folder of pictures -- not my own designs like you -- of things that should I ever have the means, I will have someone tailor make for me. |
I sewed clown costumes for my skinkids when they were little and if you looked real close they had little railroad tracks all over them from where I ripped out many many seams and started over... thank god they were clown costumes, 'cuz the absurdity of it was acceptable. My mom had her mother's ancient treadle black singer a late 1800s or early 1900s model. She sewed MOST everything on it, but she complained to my father that she could not make anything fancy, like a square dancing dress, only shirts and pants, etc.. (they belonged to a club and she wanted a dress with the ruffles, lace rick rick, bells and whistles), my father, the engineer who also taught me how to knit and crotchet, bought a pattern and on that old machine made her the most beautiful red and white square dancing dress complete with layers of ruffles and poufy sleeves, gathered waist, underskirt that made it pouf out, sweetheart neckline, rickrack everywhere, god it was fancy and gorgeous and gaudy. Minnie Pearl and Loretta Lynn look out. Fit her like a glove, she shut up and when she died at 84 she still had not gotten a new sewing machine. |
