Connie | 10-05-2005 06:46 PM | Oh my gosh...did it EVER snow...and snow... This has been the most awful day. I was expecting a snow storm, but never in my wildest dreams did I expect anything like this! First of all...we lost power at 4 AM so no alarm clock to wake me at 6. My daughter kept calling my cell phone and finally I heard it and got woke up at 6:45. We had no power...it was dark...and have you ever tried to put make up on by candlelight? My daughter told me she was on her way to work and that there were trees down everywhere. It wasn't from the wind because that hadn't come up yet...it was from the heavy snow. About 15 minutes before I had to leave for work, the lights came on so I hurried and did what I could and then left. Melissa called me to say she was stuck and got a ride into work and had to leave her van in the road. On my way to work, I couldn't believe what I saw...it was as if a tornado had gone through the city. There were trees all over in the road and I had to weave in and out to get around them. The snow was very deep on the road, but my little honda did me good and got me to work. Just as I was making my last turn into the street where I was going, a truck was stuck so I had to stop. Had a time getting going again, but I got there. We decided to call and cancel all appointments and close it down for the day, so I came home at 11:00. When I came up my street there was a blader and bulldozer pushing trees off the street. I wished I'd had my camera. Then, I got home and into the driveway and the garage door would not open. I finally had to run around the house to the back door and get in that way. Snow was up to my knees! I got inside and finally figured out what the problem was again...no power. My cell phone was going dead, so I lit a candle and headed downstairs to find that phone that isn't a cordless and plugged that in...then spent a lot of time on the phone. Finally found a battery radio and turned that on and the weatherman said...conditions are deteriorating. As if they hadn't already? Well, the winds were to start at 40 MPH. I went outside to try to save some of our trees...shake the heavy snow out. I did on a couple and then noticed a big mess in the way back part, so headed there. It's a good thing I noticed that there were two power lines down on the ground. Yikes. I had let Maddie out to go potty before that and thank goodness she didn't run back there. I carried her to a place where there were no trees to fall on her and then carried her back in. She had snowballs stuck to her fur so got out my hairdryer...no power...so I had to wash the snow balls off her with water or she may have gotten frostbite with them sticking to her like they were. Sorry this is getting so long...there's more. The house was getting colder and when I called our power company, she told me I better find a different place to spend the night. I told her I have an aviary full of birds and she said I better get them to a safe place. Ugh. I had to start catching birds...Managed to get them all into four different birdcages...covered them with blankets and then I couldn't get to my car...18 inches of heavy wet snow...so...I started shoveling...my gosh...that snow weighs a ton! I finally got a small path shoveled alongside my car and carried all the birdcages out. Poor Maddie was so shook...I think she thought I was going to leave her...she was the last thing I loaded into the car. Also packed a bag as I thought I'd be spending the night, but the power came back on around 7 or 8, so I am back home now. I feel totally exhausted...plus still have that miserable cold. I left all my birds at my daughters house...will get them when it's not so hard to get around. I stopped by my moms...to check her house since she had no power and was at my sisters and she has trees down all over the yard...one is on top of the neighbors garage! A little park we have called oak park which has lots of oak trees looks as if a bomb hit it. This is so totally unbelievable! The wind is still blowing something awful out there. Oh yeah...while out driving, I drove under downed power lines and didn't notice till I was nearly under them because I was trying to hard to concentrate on saying in the track. Good grief...what a day! There was no absolutely no travel advised because of all the trees and powerlines down, but I had to get my birds out of this cold house. *Sigh* I'm soooooo tired! |
