FREAK ACCIDENTS - Have you had one? I was thinking about the late “gentle giant” on my way in to work this morning and I am happy to say that I don’t cry when I think about him anymore. I can now remember things with a smile or a chuckle. He was something else. Well anyway I was thinking about a freak accident the two of us had and was wondering if anyone else would like to tell us about one. I think it would be an interesting thread! Here is what happened: When Ivan was still an adolescent (a huge adolescent) he was house trained almost instantly. One day as I opened the back door to let him out I reach down to pat his head as he walked by. At the same time he looked up at me and somehow my wedding rings got caught on one of his canines. It was a step down to the patio and he ended up literally pulling me out of the door and onto the cement by my rings! The fall dislodged my hand and since I was on the ground Ivan decided I was down there to play with him and started jumping all over me. Fortunately my husband heard me scream on my way down and rushed out to help me. I came away from it with some badly bruised knees and elbows and wedding rings that were pulled into an oblong shape. These rings were my wedding band, engagement ring, and eternity ring all soldered together! I barely got them off my finger before it swelled up too much. The jeweler couldn't believe what happened – he said it looked like someone had run over them with a car! Ivan was none the worse from the experience but we decided to teach him to sit and wait at the door until we gave him the go ahead. Wish we’d taught him that sooner! |
I had one not so long ago, fortunately no dogs involved. I was laying a new stair carpet and needed some carpet strips- the kind that holds the carpet joins by doors. We had some in the loft we'd brought ages ago, so I got the ladder put it against the hatch, opened it up and reached to start rumaging around just as the ladder slipped and I came crashing down. Our hatch sits over our stairs and I was half way down before I managed to throw my arms out and stop myself. Could barely walk for a couple of days & on pain killers for weeks. But I survived to tell the tale. |
Ouch Diane! That reminds me of another one! I had a washer and dryer that were in front of some metal shelves. One day I needed to get something from behind the washer so I climbed up on it and bent over the back. I dislodged a saw that was hanging on the side of the shelves and it fell straight down right behind my ear. I HEARD the little bump bump bumps as the teeth of the saw grazed the back of my ear. My ear was cut and it bled but I could have easily lost it! Whew! |
A few years ago I had took my mother to the doctor, a building ajoining the hospital, and let her out at the door while I parked in the underground parking. On the way to the elevator, I tripped which caused me to start to catch myself in a kinda run. I was going downhill and when I fell, I fell right at where the cars turn into the 2nd level. I had knocked the breath out of me, besides being skinned from top to bottom. I tore my pants and was bleeding. I couldn't move for what seemed forever. Very fortunate no cars came in or I would have been hit. I finally made it up to my car and laid down for a few minutes. I got up and went up to the office where my mom was and it was the Wound Center. I know it had to look hilalous for me to open the door in the W.C. cut, bleeding and torn pants. The nurse that was behind the desk said, Oh, my you need to go to emergancy. We got a laugh out of it later but it sure wasn't funny at the time. |
Funny you should ask this today! Yesterday, I walking down the steps and turned to pick something up off the step, well somehow I slipped and I started to tumble, except for one foot! That foot went the opposite direction of the rest of my body! I continued to fall backwards down a few more steps! I've been using crutches today and my body is starting to feel the pain of it all! This is the third time I've taken a fall down the steps, ugh! |
I had eye surgery when I was a kid and my depth perception never developed... this is usually not a problem in normal everyday life, but stairs are my worst enemy! I have fallen up and down stairs more than I care to remember. One time it was so bad I was SURE I broke my ankle. I was home alone so I crawled to the phone and called my mom's neighbor who was a nurse and had a brand new baby. She got me in the car and her baby and rushed me to the doctors, they put me in a wheelchair and took xrays.... guess what??? NO BREAK! Severe strain and I was on crutches for what was supposed to be 2 weeks, they lasted 1 day. LOL Those things are impossible. |

Cutches are the pits. Adie made me break my toe once and it was soooooo hard on the armpits! I know you aren't supposed to use them that way but my arms aren't strong enough to have my full weight on them all the time! |
ughhh I hate crutches. :( Earlier this year I got my wrist caught in the metal part on the bottom of the window blind, and it took a HUGE chunk out of my wrist. It hurt like CRAZY and my scar is nastyyyyy. and last year I was running, and right before I started running I heard a little tiny voice - clear as day - say "Don't run" which I thought was cuhrazy because helloooo...running is good for you! I didn't get 3 steps and I heard a pop in my knee and I was gone. I couldn't move my leg at all. It took me half an hour to drag myself around the corner back to my house (because of course I didn't have my cell phone with me  ). Turns out, that my knee had been dislocating and relocating because one of the muscles in my thigh wasn't working!! and that time it didn't pop back into place like it had been doing. SO weird. It still happens all the time, but it hasn't really been a problem in a while. I had to go to physical therapy for like 6 months to strengthen the one muscle--I still have to do the exercises at home all the time or it just stops working. It's the weirdest thing! every time except for that one time it's gone right back into place with some creative leg bending haha. LUCKILY, my knee doesn't hit any nerves when it dislocates, cause that would SUCK haha. It just feels really weird. and doesn't let me move my leg. That one time though...boy oh boy did that hurt!! |
It always amazes me that I could never go to the doctors and get a shot or bloodwork without my mom there... I would FREAK out. I have white collar syndrome really bad, my blood pressure goes through the roof! One time I had to tell the nurse to take my pressure again after the appt was over because they were concerned and thought I needed to be on meds, but by the end of the appt it was back to normal. Soooo the amazing part is how much PAIN I can handle when it comes unexpectedly yet a tiny needle makes me cower in a corner and avoid doctors like the plague! I am 32 yeas old!!!! LOL I should be USED to this by now! |

I always cry when I know I have to get a shot. and when it comes to bloodwork...forgetaboutit!! I pass out. It's not pretty. The last time I had it done my doctor was a GENIUS and decided to do it out of my hand instead, for which I am eternally grateful haha. I've heard shots in the hand hurt more, but I didn't even feel it AND I didn't pass out! haha. and I do not intend on getting bloodwork done again until it is completley necessary. :p My brother donates blood every month which I have soooo much respect for - I could never! |
Oh me either. I found you that you can request a butterfly needle, it's the tiny tiny needles they use on newborn babies! HAHA Everytime I do that the nurse looks at me disgusted! LOL I don't care. I want the butterfly needle! |
LOL - when I got married the first time the doctor came rushing in jabbed the needle into my arm and then "PULLED" on the plunger. That really hurt! I have hated blood tests every since. Needles don't bother me so much because I'm diabetic (type 2) and have to test my blood regularly. |
I have had too many freak accidents! I have not had many involving animals though, mainly just my own stupidity that resulted in personal injury, lol. One time though that there was a dog involved was when I took my dads boat out and brought his 2 American Bulldogs (NOT Pitts) out for a ride and stopped to play fetch in the water because they loved it, and after a bunch of rounds of fetch, Buster, my fav dog of my dads, jumped up to grab the stick and accidentally bit through my hand . You could tell right away that he totally didn't mean to and he felt so bad! He was a BIG dog and it was a BIG stick I was playing fetch with, his aim was just off when grabbing it. My doctor tried to say he HAD to report it as a dog bite, but I talked him out of it because it was such a freak accident and the dog was not at fault and was not trying to grab my hand. |
My accident happened this morning in my kitchen where Rockie is in his xpen... Rockie woke me up at his normal time at 6:30a.m. l feed him and clean up his wee wee pad, l used Mr Clean and Lysol cleaning my kitchen floor. So l go and shower and brush my teeth. l go get ready and walk into my kitchen with my pumps on and as soon as l walk in front of my stove l slipped and fell on my knees.:p l guess l put to much lysol on my tile, it was still slippery. My knees and right foot got the worst of it. |
I fell off of a cliff once while taking pictures for a photography class! It was about a 15 foot drop and I landed on my back with my camera safely settled on my chest. The hard part was getting back UP the cliff. all I could think of was how stupid I was not to have told anyone where I was going and hoping that the park rangers would find my cold dead body before the animals got it. Man! I was one solid bruise from my butt to my neck. ugly ugly ugly. After many many tries I finally managed to climb up and hike back to my care. From there I went to the ER only to find out I also had a sprained wrist! |
I was looking for an old post and decided to bump this. It was neat reading everyone's "accidents." |
I got my Yorkie because of my accident. My car had broken down so my sons and I were walking home and I tripped on a broken sidewalk and down I went. I had multiple fracture in my hand as well as cuts and bruises all over. A year later when I was at the orthopedists, I asked him when my hand would be normal again and he said never. I was so depressed that all I did was cry. That's when my friend from the vet's office suggested I get another dog. (My first dog had passed away about 6 years earlier). So my little boy really helped me so much. I had him to take care of and it took my mind off my hand. He is my little sweetheart!! |
Years ago when I was in my 20's and very pregnant I asked my husband to bring in a load of wood for the wood stove before he left for work. A huge snow storm was coming and I wanted to make sure if we lost electricity there was plenty of wood inside. My husband worked for the Railroad and he was called in early because of the storm and he didn't bring in the wood. So I ended up going out in the freezing cold to get the wood. I picked up a good size log and it slipped from my hands, hits another log and that log comes up and hits me between the eyes. I actually saw stars, heard a crack like a baseball was just hit out of the ball park. When my husband comes home he finds a wife with 2 black eyes and a forehead a caveman would be proud of. a |
I was on my way to the dentist a few years ago when I went flying (we never did figure out what caused it) and landed on my face. Took half the skin off my nose and broke my two front teeth. Lucky thing I already had the dental appointment, huh? Or is that somehow ironic? |
My grandma had a freak accident. She was roller blading a few years ago and she was going down hill. There was a little bump on the side walk and down she went. She broke her arm and a bone in her face. Her car was across town but a hospital was extremely close. She could see it from where she was. She was all cut up and bleeding really bad. It was in a pretty large city, and I was surprised that no one stopped for her! But she went to the hospital and found that she broke some bones. She also had another freak accident. She is a nurse and she had to go to Flint MI. For those of you who don't know, most of it is a really bad place, just a lot of violence. But she was taking care of a patient with a few other nurses. She was putting the man into his chair when shots rang out. All of the people hit the floor, exept for her of course. She is a little crazy and it takes her a little while to catch on! Haha! She then went on the floor once everyone screamed " SUZI!!! GET ON THE GROUND!!!!!" She hit the floor and then a bullet flew through the house. It went through one wall then down the hall and then stuck in the end wall. Nobody was hurt but everyone was a little shaken up. It turns out that some dummies were shooting at each other a little bit away. I could go on forever with stories like when she had a back spasm and laid on the floor for hours while I was there, or when my dad got beat up by a gang in Chicago, but hey I think two stories is enough. |
Do spinal fractures caused by coughing count as freak accidents?? If so I had a freak accident. Had two spinal fractures in 2008 caused by coughing. Had to have Kyphoplasty and still having back problems now. |
within a week of turning 40 (I knew it wasn't going to be a good birthday) I dropped a wine glass I was washing and with a knee-jerk reaction tried to "catch" it. Well, needless to say it hit another glass in the sink popped and I grabbed it at the same time. I immediately did not feel my right index finger. I learned through a long and painful road that I severed the nerve and cut the tendon, ligament and muscle in the process. The bone is what stopped the glass from going straight through. It is coming up on a year and I still have pins and needles in my finger and cannot grip anything too well. Bad for me as I used to study Shaolin Kempo karate and Jiu Jitsu. without being able to grip I really cannot grapple. The good news is that I can write. |
This is an interesting thread and glad you bumped it up. Wow, with some of these freak accidents. My story... about 7 years ago I was teaching and picked up a piece of paper with a staple that was not attached correctly. It went into my thumb and I pulled it out. No big deal. Two days later I went to the emergency room and had an infection going down my thumb, hand, and wrist. So, had surgery, missed a week of school, had an IV for 2 weeks, and a home health nurse, all for one stupid stable. |
I'm glad I bumped this!!!!!!! When we lived in a Chicago suburb my husband's car, which was parked on the street, was sideswiped in the middle of the night. It was totaled! Now three years later and living in a little bitty town (-population -300) his replacement car, which was parked in front of the house off the street was sideswiped in the middle of the night on the very same side!!!!! Both cars were black and both cars had just been paid off. What are the odds? |
Several years ago my daughter got married on the beach. After the ceremony we had to walk up a flight of stairs in a tunnel to get to the hotel where the reception was being held. Some one had left a wine glass on one of the steps and I tripped and fell. I got a cut between my eyes and couldn't stop the bleeding. My husband wanted to take me to the ER but I wanted to stay. After the reception I went to the ER. They put 6 stitches between my eyes. When I got up the next morning both eyes were black. I looked beautiful. |

In my 50 years I've had more than a few freak accidents-But the one that takes the cake happened when I was 18 or 19. Things like this cannot be repeated, even if you tried! The senario is as follows: I had an old '69 Opel Kadet (my first car) that I let my best friend drive (as her truck was "restricted" for a couple weeks). Since it was Saturday night, we went to pick up the "3rd Musketeer" at her house. My passenger side door could only be closed completely from on the inside. Just as I got out I realized I had left my purse and went to reach into the car to grab it, and--wait for it-- my buddy CLOSED AND LOCKED my UPPER LIP in the door!!!:D I'm flailing my arms and screaming "Junie open the #@%&in' door!" Time just stood still for a few seconds while that info sunk in. Anwhow, we got me unstuck, my lip swelled up (I DID NOT look like Angelina), and turned purple, but girlfriends and I carried on that night, anyway. We were "hearty partiers" back in the "day", LOL! |
I'm an idiot when it comes to cutting big stuff with a knife...splitting a large loaf of bread, cutting up canteloupe, etc. I cannot count how many times I've been sawing away and hacked into my finger in the process. No one likes blood on their watermelon. :( I also cut half of my finger off when I was a kid...on a swingset! They reattached it, but I have no feeling in part of that finger now...which has resulted in my burning it pretty badly before because I couldn't feel what I was doing. I also have a scar on my chin from trying to pop a balloon once. It was the mylar kind and I decided to pop it with a fountain pen--by pulling it through the balloon in the direction of my face. In the end, it slipped and I only managed to drive the pen into my chin under my lip. And, the mother of all freak accidents (for me) was breaking my ankle playing basketball. Sounds really cool and athletic, but truth be told, it was a game of HORSE. |
On Christmas night about 9 years ago, we were on our way home from Christmas dinner at the in-laws. We stopped at a convenient store to get some lottery tickets and coffee. While we were at the register, an SUV plowed through the store. The rows of shelves fell down like dominos. Glass flew through the air and cut up my son. I got hit from behind by many things (not sure what) and as I was falling TOWARD the vehicle's path, hubby grabbed my arm and yanked me out of the way of the SUV just in time. I injured my back and neck but 6 months of PT fixed me up. Many many injuries that night cuz the store was full of people. A teenager was trapped under the SUV. Children were bleeding and crying (the candy isle & shelving was knocked down injuring kids). One lady had a broken hip. Thankfully nobody lost their life. Our lottery tickets went flying and got lost LOL. We sure wish we knew if we had won something on that crazy night but we'll never know. |
