I'm sure we will get another bird nesting here soon! Usually it is the cardinals and wrens that nest in the ficus. A snake got some eggs a couple of years ago from the ficus and within a week or so there was a new nest. As for the snake, it is a black snake which are harmless. My son and his two buddies started throwing stuff at the snake and trying to find things to poke it until I put a stop to it. They are actually good to have around. They kill the mice that will otherwise get into the house. This snake doesn't go into the air conditioner it goes right up the siding into the walls ~ eek! Every once in awhile we will find one in the garage... that freaks me out but I figure as long as it doesn't get into the actual house ~ I'm good. |
you are so non-chalant about the snake and my heart is still pounding just from looking at the picture!!! Yikes! |
Wow! Thats so sad!!! :( |
I'm sorry:( I hate snakes, they gross me out. I remember in PR we had one in the backyard and my grandfather took a huge knife and split it in half and you could see both halfs still moving...groosss! |

As sad as this is, this is human nature. Black snakes are good to have around. We get snakes out here all the time, of course, we have to watch, as we also have poisonous ones. When we have black ones, hubby usually just picks them up (with gloves on) and throws them over the fence. A few years ago, we had a rabbit that had babies, they had their nest on the ground by a tree out back. All they do is dig a small spot. I saw hubby outside on the john deere stopped watching something. I could see a mother rabbit jumping back and forth. I asked hubby what was going on. Well, the snake had eaten two of the 3 baby bunnies and the mother was trying to save them. It broke my heart. I asked hubby why did you let it eat the babies, he said it's nature(and it really is). After that snake was done, it crawled up the tree. |

Things like this are always hard to deal with. But sadly, life happens. I once watched a hawk go in and out of our birch tree plucking out baby bluebirds that had just fledged from my box. I was so mad. I tried to chase it away but he kept coming back. I was so brokenhearted. Life goes on though...but I did take my box down. I just couldn't go through that again. |
