Anyone have laminate flooring? Need your help.. Alright so this spring/summer we are ripping up the carpet in the family room. We are thinking about putting laminate down instead of a new carpet as we do breed so we will often have puppies which means accidents. We went to Lowes and got some samples, we really like the Pergo brand. So my questions are, if you have laminate, how do you yorkies handle it? How does the laminate floor hold up to them? Has anyone installed it themselves? It sounded pretty easy. I am concerned that if we get the laminate, they will slide around too much and get hurt. How do your yorkies handle it when they are running/playing? Also how does laminate hold up to potty accidents? I asked this question to the guy that works at Lowes and he said if I used a certain glue on the pieces where they snap together it will form a seal. So if anyone could give their review on laminate flooring and how the yorkies do with it, I would appreciate it very much!! |
Anxious to see the responses to this Tracey. We've been thinking of going to hardwood, but we've been thinking about it for a couple years now. It's just now starting to get to me hearing their nails on the kitchen linoleum, so not sure now if I want to hear click click click all the time....lol If you do a search...there are lots of threads about flooring. |
I have a laminated floor in my kitchen. It's looks like blue/grey tile. Buddy has no one to run around with but he has not slipped on it. I have had it for four years. I love it. I had it installed. It does have a texture to it, it's not plain like the wood look floor. Easy to clean and easy to keep. It always looks nice. |
We have laminate, and my husband has installed it for us and many other family and friends. He does construction on the side. It hold up great. (Hardwood is different)It's real, and I don't know anything about how it hold up. I have the snap and lock kind. It is easy to clean, use ammonia,or white vinegar. My guys never pee on it...they only pee on rugs...lol. Now we're potty trained, but the only time I notice the floor to be slippery,is when I am distributing treats to my three. Pongo gets his first, and he takes it upstairs and always hides it for later, but Aiden who I give it to second, runs in place until he finally gets traction and chases Pongo...so funny. If I had it my way I'd have laminate through the whole house. Easy to clean, and throw rugs can be interchanged for holidays and certain color schemes. Good Luck, you won't be sorry. Mu husband actually put one right over my dads old rug. They are what is considered a "floating floor",so they hide alot of imperfections. |
If you have dogs who have lots of accidents the liquid will seep into the cracks and smell. We ended up having vinyl installed. Almost the whole room is one continous sheet so no seams for urine to leak into. I do have 5 dogs and 2 are elderly. One of them is blind and sometimes can't find her way to the pee pad or to the door to get out. It may not be as pretty but have saved me a world of clean up problems |
Us Too! We are doing the same thing!! We recently pulled up the carpet in one of the bathrooms , took out an oversized tub & laid in the laminate that we got at Sams....35 yr warranty & way less than Lowes. In fact this summer we are pulling out all the carpet & putting in bamboo. Sam's carries that too. Not the laminate bamboo that Lowes carries but the real thing that is the same cost as the laminate at Lowes. Any way the way it seams together as long as you clean up any "accidents" you shouldn't have any problems. We put the big furkids kennel in there along with their food & water & the same for the cats. I dust mop it every few days & mop it once a week with a spray of "Out" pet odor & stain remover. :D |
Ellie does fine on all surfaces. We have vinyl wood planking (scratches easily but cheap and looks okay), linoleum and a small amount of tile. She has walked on laminate and did fine. I find that smaller dogs don't have a problem on hard floors and larger dogs do. The vinyl wood planking (not really recommending) is peel and stick and you really need to use extra glue to keep it down. If it is done right, urine cleans up okay. Sometimes it holds a smell but a peroxide, baking soda and dish soap mixture take it out. I had heard somebody say don't do laminate with dogs because it scratches easily. |
I have had both beautiful hardwood and now laminate. I loved my hardwood kitchen floor but boy even with it protected it got scratched and dented so much. I didn't have Izzy with the hardwood but have 3 cats with only back claws and you should have seen all the scratches from them. Even us humans with our shoes showed scuff and scratch marks. It looked terrible. So about 3 years ago we ripped all that hardwood out:( and installed the interlocking laminate.:D Wow I love, love it. Doesn't scratch has held up with Izzy and it's funny - when she gets the zoomies with the cats she has learned to take her corners very well:rolleyes: and not slide into anything. It's funny to see how fast they adapt to the floor. Hahaha....no pee problems but I have one throw rug by our front door..and wham..that's Izzy's fav if I don't catch her by the patio door to go outside.;) Oh and cleaning is sooo easy with the laminate - get your Swiffer Wet Jet and that's all you need. Or if you want to go natural - your water and vinegar solution works. |
We have Pergo in our living room and a very inexpensive wood looking laminate from Ikea in our office and spare bedroom. What a world of difference between the two. The Pergo installs pretty easily. Our is not sealed and we have had no issues with cleaning up the occasional pee spot with a Fantanstic-like solution. The girls do not slip on this at all. The cheap stuff does not install easily - even though it says simple snap and lock. Although it cleans well, it siply doesn't fit together like a higher end brand does, so wetness will seep into the cracks. It is very slippery as well - even for humans with socks on!!!!!! Both floors are very easily cleaned with my Shark steam mop. I don't like usually chemicals of any kind and the floors are almost dry when I'm done with them. |
I have laminate in my kitchen, breakfast area and long hallway and they run ok on it. Sometimes they slide when they are chasing each other but when just running to go out they are fine. I just use vinegar and water to clean. Paw prints show up easily when it's wet out but it's so easy to wipe up. |
Make sure if you use the glue kind that you have all the seams sealed. It is supposed to be impervious but somehow my cat managed to ruin the flooring in the dining room in our old house. I guess that there was a spot that wasn't glue properly. I loved it though, easy clean up! |
I have an engineered hardwood floor from Home Depot, Harris Tarkett, Oak Wheat pattern, I think. I really love it. The dogs slip a bit when zooming around really fast, but it doesn't bother them. I have a little boy who marks in the house, so I find sprinkles on the wood floor from time to time, it wipes right up, even if it is dried, it doesn't bother the finish, nor does it smell at all. We've had it for 6 years and the shine has dulled a bit, which is fine, but it still looks beautiful and the boys nails do not scratch it. I find that laminate "clicks" from nails and shoes too much for my tastes, but then I've only been around it in other persons homes, so I have no idea of the type or quality. We built on a den, office and closet and we left the floors concrete and stained them - WOW! now that is really nice and absolutely no problems with cleanup or anything else. I wouldn't recommend ripping up carpet and trying to stain concrete, but if you are building, the stained concrete is great!!! |
We're going to do the same thing in our family room. We have berber carpet now that is 10 years old, and it's totally destroyed from pee. We're going to put down the laminate, but, we're going to go with the tiles. Mom has those in her kitchen/dining room and they're big pieces and look very easy to install. I think hubby is going to do ours, but, it unfortunately won't be until the economy picks back up.:( |
We put down a oak wood "look" laminate by Armstrong almost 4 years ago and have been pleased. We have one placed that slightly buckled early on due to a water spill, so we have learned to keep something under that water bowls. We did put down a small cut piece of linolium down in front the back door where they run in and out of the doggie door due to some sliding issues and we have a large 8 x 10 run in the middle of the living room. We had ours installed by a small local company and selected them as we liked the variety of wood looks they offered versus Lowes/Home Depot. My aunt put down the "engineered" wood flooring and they did it themselves and it was alot of work to put in.....but when they finished it looked beautiful....more "real". |

We put ours in ourselves too, in the living room, hall and bedroom. My husband and sil did it over a weekend, but they worked 12 hour days to get it done. It was pre-glued. It fit together, but had to be "tapped" into place. Once in place though, the glue stuck and it was done. The hard part was cutting odd sized pieces. My husband was a carpenter, so he knew how to measure and cut appropriately. Still, it was a lot of work, but saved us about 1/2 the cost. Installation can be almost expensive as the material. This was the last big project my husband completed before he developed heart failure. Shortly afterward, he had to retire. He still takes so much pride in that wood floor. |
