Weight-Loss Surgery Hi Guys, My mom just told me she is going to have weight loss surgery on Sept. 30th and I am VERY freaked out about it! I'm so scared for her. She just turned 50 and I think she's decided to do something drastic without really thinking about it. I remember someone here posted they had it done and were very pleased about the results and had pictures too but I can't find the post anywhere. Can someone help me find that post? Also, does anyone else have any experience with this, both the good and the bad? I'd like to know what kind you had done, the effects afterwards, complications, everything. You can PM me if you want. |
Is it gastric bypass surgery? I;ve seen a few stories about it on tv. But like any other surgery, it has alot of risks. I hope your mom picked a good doctor that would give her the information she's suppose to know. Good doctors will not allow her to push through with the surgery without her knowing the risk that it comes with. Goodluck! You can also help her by printing out articles about the surgery and the effect it will have on her life. my prayers to you and your mom :) |
I did alot of research on gastric bypass and went to see a surgeon but my insurance denied me why i dont know age 33 100pds overweight with high blood pressure I would love to have it done it has alot of risk but so does being overweight!! |
Me too. I haven't even looked into how much it would cost because I'm afraid of the cost. It doesn't help anything that I'm diabetic so that would probably be the first reason they turn me down. I could lose a 110# person (which I weighed at 21yrs) but I think at my age I'd be a little too thin. But I could lose 100# and not be unhappy. I've tried a lot of things but I'm one of those people who when they go off the diet (not slip) can't seem to get back on that particular diet again. Groooaaannn, I'm so fat! Oh, oh, my boss used to say, "I was fast until I lost my S." Sylvia |
Tara...I wish you mom the very best if she has this done - Maybe it's something she just HAS to do - can it be reversed ? is THIS the thread you wanted to see ? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t+loss+surgery |
My friend had it done and the results are amazing. She has a weight loss surgery forum, I will PM you the url so your mom could check it out. Its a great place to go for support or questions. |
GROANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN If I was only fat OR old it wouldn't be so bad . "OR" being the key word :p |
Oh, hey! Missy's Mommy, can you pm it to me too? Thanks, Sylvia |
Hi i had weightloss surgery 2yrs ago in june. I have had no complications perhaps you should look at this site. www.obesityhelp.com it was very helpful to me pre-op. |
2 Attachment(s) I missed this thread,,,,,,,,, My sister Debbie had the gastric bypass surgery. She was 378 lbs and would actually stop breathing at night when she was sleeping. She had always been a big girl her whole life. The doctors told her that she was going to die if she didn't do anything about it! So, She decided to have the surgery. It's been about 5 years and she couldn't be more happy! I have to admit, the surgery went well. BUT she stoped breathing 2 times in recovery and got very ill. It took her quite a while to heal, but I know for a fact it was the best thing she could have done to save her life. She lost a total of 248 lbs! And now is at a healthy 130. She even got pregnant with Cherish not even a year after surgery and the doctors were worried because she continued to lose while pregnant. Cherish was just fine and came out a whopping 8.6 lbs. My sister has been through alot and is now in trouble again. But I know if she was still the big girl she was, I know deep in my heart she wouldn't be here today! She tackeled one hurdle with the wieght loss and now she has to clean up do her time and be the wonderful mommy we all know she can be! I'm sorry to go on and on about my sister. But I really think if you are 100 + lbs,,,, I say go for it! Good luck to your mother! Here are some before and after pictures of Debbie,,,,,, The after pic is of Debbie on the right, Andrea (who just became a mommy last week) in the middle. And there is me on the left. Boy I can sure lose some lbs by the looks of my double chin! eeeekkkkk |
Wow Awesome story !! Latuya - I don't mean to change the subject but you said she stopped breathing at night ? My husband does this - Was it called Sleep Apnea ? Is that from being overweight or something else ? My husband has gained like 40 pounds from his illness and the steriods he's taking.... and scares the h*ll out of me at night - he stops breathing for LONG periods of time....then GASPS for breath.....I jump straight out of my skin and it's awful to witness - did the Sleep problem stop after losing weight ? |
I am now jumping through the insurance companies hoops to get the new surgery! Good luck to your mother! |
Wow, Moncia- your sister looks amazing! I would never have guessed it was the same person! I only know one person who has had the surgery. My aunt's neice has always been very, very heavy and had the surgery done a year or two ago. Unfortunately, she didn't put in the effort to lose weight just expecting the surgery to do it all for her. She is as heavy (if not heavier) than before her surgery- it's sad. She had no medical complications from the surgery, though. a |
Monica, Thanks you so much for sharing your sister's story with me. I cannot believe the difference in the pictures - it is so unreal. It is wonderful to hear and see positive stories. I truly wish the best for your sister. By the way, you are beautiful. My mother just told me she too has the sleep apnea issue and the doctor told her that losing the weight fixes it in 95% of the cases. Also, he told her if you don't do something, that stopping breathing is very hard on your heart and will cause other issues. She is planning on having the Roux-N-Y gastric bypass. It is the one where it is physically impossible to gain the weight back. The websites that were suggested by Missy'sMommy and lycansmom are wonderful. They provide lots of information and are a great place to go to get positive advice. I have since learned the risk is really not as big as you hear that it is in the media and many more people have done it than you realize. I am actually feeling positive about it for my mom now. Though of course I'll be nervous when she has it done, I think it may indeed be for the best. Thanks to everyone here for their support and I will keep you all posted on how she does. |

Sorry to hear about your husband. I remember reading that he was ill a while back. What does he have? Will he be ok? Tara, thank you sweetie! You put a smile in my face! I am pretty ha. LOL LOL LOL LOL!!!!!!!! No but really, I have a weight issue as well. I am 180 and was ok with that till up to about last year. I'm getting older and things are not sitting like they used to. As you can see my face is very round and seems to be falling. LOL my chin hangs a bit more then I care for it to. My arms and tummy,,,,, forget it! The only part of my body that is still in very good shape is my legs. I take after my mamma with the legs! My mom is going to be 60 and still has nice firm and smooth legs. I do hope everything works out for your mother and that she heals with flying colors! It took my sister quite a while to heal,,, but if she had to do it all over again she would do it in a heart beat! |
LOL Monica - your post was so funny - you look GOOD and you should be proud of how you look - we can't control our looks but we sure are critical of ourselves aren't we ? I know I do that too - and I loved your pictures - It's great seeing people we talk to - and that was a great post about your sister...nice to hear sucess stories about this surgery ! On my hubby - thank you for asking and to be honest - no ...he won't ever be ok - but hopefully he can hold on for a while - it's terminal... and he got really bad this year.... so this is all new to me (and of course him too) but I'm always looking for different things for him to try. Thanks for asking though - that means alot. |
Oh, Vilette, I'm so sorry. I really am. I wondered how he was doing since you mentioned that he stayed home during your son's wedding. You always maintain such an upbeat and encouraging spirit. I'm praying for you and for him and will continue to do so. I know I've never met you but I care about you and your family. I think the world is a better place because you are here. |
Funny thing reading this post on here today. I am in the process of doing all the paper work and jumping through the hoops for my surgery. I read one post where her insurance denied her, honey keep trying! They will give in sooner or later and it is better for you to have it now than later, work with your family doctor on the paper work end of it. DON'T GIVE UP! Another post said they would get turned down for having diabetes- nope that is why my brother in law had it done because he was diabetic. I just saw a friend of mine who had the surgery done May 21, 2005 for the first time since then and I walked right past her and didn't even recognize her, she lost almost 70 pounds already! But this surgery does not work if you don't work with it. It is only a tool to help you eat less and feel good, have energy and help get the body you want. I am sorry this is so long but this is something I have been researching for a few years and I am ready to have my thinking and change my life. I love who I am but I hate the way I look! I only have myself and my lack of will power towards food to blame for it.....I will keep everyone posted on the progress! Sorry this is so long....I can't run a mile but I can type and chat forever! |
I have a friend who had the surgery done and lost 160 lbs. She was even on the Oprah Winfrey show a couple years ago. I met her after her weightloss and can't imagine that she was ever heavy. She is a real fitness buff and is careful about what she eats, always reading labels. I think she has to take supplements. She teaches spin classes and looks fabulous, 5'9'' and a size 6. She has successfully completed 3 marathons. I'm so proud of her. I wonder if she would have lost the weight without the surgery because it was a complete lifestyle change. |

sorry to burst your bubble but i dont want your mum to be mislead YOU CAN regain weight with the bypass the surgery that YOU CANNOT regain weight is the SWITCH. i have had the gastric band which is good if your a mountain eater the band is tightened around your tummy so only small amounts of food go down BUT YOU CAN EAT ice cream choc or anything thats runny so will power is needed, iv lost a fair amount but wish id had the bypass and am still considering it its the money that puts me off id have to pay for the band to be removed and the bypass to be done, your looking at about $32000 which is bout £16000 pounds so thats a lot of saving iv got to do wendy and rosie :rose: :yorkiesar |
I am curious about the extra skin. I am afraid that if I could afford the surgery that then I'd have all this loose skin and no money to get it removed. Sylvia |
