Advice On Storing Photos?
 
Okay...I need some advice. I cannot find a FREE photo storage dealio that I like.

Hotmail/Windows Live offers 25G (yes!!) of free photo storage, which would be great - however - you can only upload 5 photos at a time. At that rate, I'd be 90 before I got them uploaded, for the love of Mike. Ya know?

Then flickr - with the free version, I don't have enough folders to sort. :(

So, I guess I'm looking for:

*Free
*Fast upload (many pics at a time)
*Ability to sort into many folders

Anyone have some photastic advice?

You are not going to be happy storing ALL your photos on line. I use a free google program to manage them locally (Picasa 3: Free download from Google)

If you want a place to store your photos, think about an external disk drive. You can get a 500G drive for about $75.

I got a Flickr account and got annoyed by the daily upload limit and I just paid the $25 or whatever it was for the year. I'm pretty happy with it. Server space costs more than that per MONTH so I decided it was worth it.

P.S. The iPhoto->Flickr account instant upload helped my decision a bit :)

Do you say that bc of the upload/download/re-upload for editing etc.?

My main thing is I want them off of my C drive, just to keep them safe. I now store all of my personal documents (not photos) on Box.net and I freakin' LOVE it. I can access my documents from anywhere, and it acts as a "backup" in a sense, as well. Soooo, I was thinking of doing the same for my photos.

But, now I'm wondering if I should just keep them on my 16gb flash drive - after reading what you said. Confused.

You don't know about Photobucket? It's great; you get 1 gig for free. They have a bulk uploader, and you can have as many albums as you like. They have a new feature that allows you to organize and sort photos in your albums, and it's really easy to share. You can set your account to private, if you don't want people to see all your pictures, but you can still link and post individual photos.

I did get an e-mail from Cox the other day that said they said they have a new free photo hosting site, but I haven't tried it yet.

I use Kodak Gallery. The upload time is a bit slow, but I think you can make it faster somehow with firefox. I need to have my brother explain it to me!:rolleyes:

I really like the way you can orginize albums and I have ordered prints from them before and I'm always VERY happy with the printing!

My cousin and I are both Nikon dslr photography freaks and we both recomend Kodakgallery.com! She has tons more albums than I do but I just got my D80 so I will have to try to keep up!

I was just playing around with my hotmail account and figured something out. Go to create an album, then you'll see the 5 lines for uploading. Just above that there is a link that says "Download" something or other for uploading -- if you do this, you will be able to drag & drop as many files as you want to upload them all at once!! I just did it, and it worked for me!

I do know about them...for some reason, I always thought they were more of a "link service" (ie, linking photos to a forum or whatev). I didn't know you also stored the pics there too, lol! :p

I do have my older pics on Kodak...but, when I uploaded them before, it shrunk them terribly, it's really weird. Those I uploaded, I'm limited to printing like 4x6 max :(. Did that happen to you? I have a new D90 btw :D, hubby replaced my D40 for xmas :)!

OMG, that is brilliant!!!!!!!! I'm going to try it. Hotmail/Windows Live is what I'd really like to use bc they give you 25 flippin' Gig! Great tip :thumbup:!

Have you considered using an external firewire or usb hard drive? That way, if you ever need your pics and don't have access to the internet for whatever reason, you have the drive that you can connect to any computer.s I have a Seagate One Terabyte drive (1000 gigs), that does automatic backups of my photo computer and drives (completely customizable). I use this drive for storing photos and video only. So if computer ever fails, I have it all physically. I don't know, but internet back ups scare me, lol

Thanks MaryKay - I thought about an extrnl too. I have a 16gb flash drive that would easily hold everything, but I just don't know how reliable those things are. What I do love about having them online is I can access them anywhere, but I hear you on the concerns. Ugh, I don't know what to do...

Where did you get that drive? I looked for it on amazon and not sure I'm finding the right one. For auto-backups, do you have to remember to always leave the drive connected then (I have a laptop)? And then you just program the backups through utilities?

They are more reliable than the internet, IMHO. :) I bought mine at Best Buy, but I am sure they are available at many online and other electronci stores.
It is called a FreeAgent Drive and there are different versions. There is no remembering involved. All you have to do is set up what drives you want backed up and when, and the drive does the rest. For example, I do a lot of photo/video stuff, and I have the drive set up to do auto backups on all pictures/video. Thats it. Nothing more. You can leave it powered all the time, I have a desktop, but all you have to do with a laptop is make sure to connect it to the usb/ and or firewire.

Heres a link to some of the Seagate drives, but I am sure there are others, like Western Digital available

ImageShack is a good one, too. I don't use it that often, but I know you can store pictures for free on there. :)

This is weird...I just tried to find that button for uploading more than 5 at a time....I don't have it! :(

It's not a button - there's a link hidden in the text - I wish I could remeber what it says but I can't go back to that now that I have unlimited uploads. Look closely at all the text and look for any links, Right now mine just says "Having trouble uploading? Try the standard upload page." so that must be the page you're on. I must have the "Advanced" option or something like that. Look very closely, it's there!

I've looked everywhere, hovered over all the text - closed/opened the window. It's just not there. :(

Twenty-five gigs, I had to check that out. Look at the picture and see where it say "Install the upload tool for faster, easier uploads"? It's written on a yellow bar, and this usually means it has something to do with Active X, if you are running a different browser than IE, maybe you need to give it permission to use active X. Perhaps, if yours isn't displayed there you might do a search for "upload tool."

YES!! That's it!! I thought it said "Download" something, but it was "Install" -- I thought I was going nuts! :D

I just tried it and the drag and drop method didn't work very fast for me. I was hoping you could drop a whole file in, not just a picture, but I was able to go back and use the browse feature, after installing this, and I could download all the pictures in one folder. Downside is it will not upload files with the same name, and many of my files have the same name like Dram1 or Dram2. I think photobucket will allow you to download pictures with the same name.

This is SO bizarre. Nancy, thank you so much for that screen shot! What's weird is that I don't even have that yellow bar going across (or the 'Install')...I have everything else, but not that! What le heck?

I've always used photobucket. It's great. You can upload pictures by bulk and it's easy to use. You can sort into different folders too. I've had my account for about 6 years now and I'm always taking pictures!

It may be that if you first don't use it, that option goes a way, and you need to find it again. That's the way it was on Photobucket, I did the standard one at a time uploading for a while, and when it first offered the bulk uploader, I didn't use it. Later, this didn't automatically come up, and when I decided I wanted to use it, I had to find it, but it wasn't that hard. My other thought is that it may something to do with your browser, and since it wants you to install a program to make uploading easier, your browser settings aren't allowing that option. Maybe the safety is set too high. I've been playing around with it, and you can link photos, just like you do at photobucket, and it will accept animated gifs, a biggie for some of us. :D

OMG, I am going to punch myself in the face, I am so irritated right now.

I've looked all over this dang thing, even tried to do a search for "install tool", checked my security setting - said 15 hail marys....NOTHING.

I'm on firefox, I wonder if I should try to open in IE.

The hail marys didn't work? I don't know if this is a new feature, but their seach tool stinks. Since I already installed the dang thing, I can't go back and see how to find that option again.

HALLE - FLIPPIN' - LUJAH!!!!!!!!

You MUST open it in IE in order to see that yellow bar - it is totally absent in Firefox. Thank you for mentioning IE! That was it!

Omg, sometimes little things just get me going when I can't solve them...wow...I thought I was going to blow there for awhile.
