Really good hand lotion?? I have the *worst* dry skin on my hands during this time of the year. It's actually painful to type because my skin is so messed up! This is the worst it's been in years, and I've about had it! Does anyone know of any *really* good hand lotion? What different kinds have you tried? Does it vary with different skin types? Are the results long lasting or does it only work as long as you keep using it? Thanks! ETA: also, as money is tight right now (though I WILL spend money to get good hand lotion!), does anyone know of any home remedies? Even if they're not long lasting, just something to help a bit? |
I've never had any luck with store bought lotions...have a bathroom foll of them right now. I use the Mary Kay hand lotion kit...it has the soft wax, buffing cream, cleansing gel and then her hand lotion...I love it! My hands are so soft and smooth afterwards. My hands get chapped pretty easily since I wash them alot but once I use the kit they feel and look wonderful. |
I have a problem too..The tips of my fingers will get little splits ...like paper cuts....very painful...I also have tons of creams...I use them all....but when they get really bad...I use vaseline.....I even bought the finger covers...lol.. |
Cetephil. It comes in a jar, about $12.00, it is great for dry rough hands, feet, elbows and also for your face as a night moisturizer. I use it head to toe after showers, and put plenty on my hands, at bedtime. also using a humidifier or just boiling water will help tremendousluy. |
The Cetaphil is really good and so is Eucerine. Very heavy lotions for dry skin. I would suggest that you also be sure to not use very hot water. Right now the heat tends to dry out your skin and if you showering or washing dishes in very hot water it will do extreme damage. You have to be careful becuase it can turn into Eczema. I suffered from some Eczema caused by hormone and the hot water after having my son several years ago. When I consulted the dermatologist he told me that after a bath do not rub your skin dry, use the towel to blot your skin. When you rub it there is damage done to the skin. He also suggested either using baby oil on your skin while it's damp or just be sure to immediately lotion up your skin. Good luck..I am ashy and itchy too :D |

I feel Your Pain!!! I've used them all over the course of 20 years and the latest, "Vaseline Intensive Rescue Clinical Therapy" is by far the best. I picked some up at wal-mart for about $6 for a 6.8 oz bottle. Also, I suggest that you try washing your hands with Head and Shoulders shampoo. |
Thank you all SO SO much!! my2boyz- thanks for the suggestion! I've not heard of that! Deb - The splits are AWFUL! I have one now on my thumb that goes from under my nail to the tip. It hurts like CRAZY! Jeanie - I think I've heard of that before, but I've never tried it. Thanks! :) and thanks for the humidifier suggestion! Beth - I used to have *horrendous* Eczema on my hands. One Christmas (I'm gonna guess I was about 6) my brother had to open my presents for me because my hands were so bad! This is probably the worst they've been since that year, though they're not quite that awful, thank God! and thanks for letting me know about hot water! at work, I wash the dishes sometimes, and the water is scalding! emilyann - Thank you so much for the link! T-Money - thanks! Head and Shoulders, eh? I've never heard of doing that! I'll have to give it a shot! Thanks guys. :) and feel free to keep the suggestions coming! |
Megan I love to wash and shower with hot water. The Derm told me that it's a no no...dries out any oils that are in your skin. Warm or luke warm in the summer does it and pat dry your skin. I have been trying to take the time to lotion up my ashy skin and it's definitely helping. The super dry spots are gone. Once you dry out the skin it cracks like that and that can lead to skin infections. Oooh also dish washing should be with gloves. I don't like that because I want the dishes to be squeaky clean. |

Keeping hot water away from my hands Using good moisturizers (fragrence free) Washing with head and shoulders helps a lot. Don't Scratch!!!!!!!!!!!!! The large tube of blistex is a good portable moisturizer. |
Another good thing might be to slather on maybe some olive oil or heavy oil on your hands at night and put a sock of glove on it to let it soak in. Once the skin starts splitting you need heavy moisture. |
I love that Goat Milk's lotion that comes from Cracker Barrel. (I'm sure you can get it other places too.) I used to think it stinks, but they have the lightly scented kind now and it smells good and leaves your hands so smooth! |
A really good quick fix is to take a small handful of salt, add some olive oil or whatever oil you have on hand and scrub away, then rinse. If you have any cuts or hangnails use sugar instead of salt. eta: it only takes a little tiny bit of both salt and oil. If it doesn't feel scrubby enough, just add more. |
I like the bath and body works, but, also aveeno works very well, as does corn huskers(that you can get at walmart, and is all my hubby will use). I do know the aveeno one time cleared mine up just in a matter of a few short hours |

Beth - I have this insane heavy-duty lotion stuff that I got a while ago for some other dry skin problems I was having (which it worked swimmingly on) so I tried doing the sock thing with it to no avail! Good idea for the oil! Misty - interesting! Is it actually made from Goat's Milk? (sorry -- stupid question haha). Thanks! :) Nikki - LOL I saw salt and I was like "what are you trying to DO to me!!?!" haha. but that is a great suggestion!!! Thank you! phfgkl - thanks for the suggestion! :) |

I recently bought this for my heels. They are cracked and dry because I am a hilly billy at heart and like to walk barefoot all over. It really works and when I am done putting it on my foot the left over I rub all over my hands and elbows. Heel Rescue Superior Moisturizing Foot Cream | ProFoot | Beauty & Spa | Walgreens |

I feel ya sister!! My hands are sooooo dry right now too. I LOVE Aveda Hand Relief. It is spendy but my absolute favorite. I actually even use the Foot Relief on my hands if they are super dry. |
Nikki - just thought of something...would doing the sugar/salt and oil thing take the skin OFF your hands? cause I need to put some more skin ON my hands. :p They're like...raw. ew. |
|
Thanks for starting this post. I am having issues with dry hands (face, etc). My hands will get red and raw. I wash my hands all the time and I am a firm believe, the hotter the water, the better. (sigh) |
My sister in law gave me some really great lotion for Christmas from Bath and Body works. The brand is called True Blue, but I can't remember the exact name at the moment. This stuff is really amazing, it is very moisturizing and almost feels like it's whipped or something--not oily at all. |
Hi Megan!...Sorry your skin is giving you problems...This nasty weather doesn't help......I've been using these products from Walgreen's Called "Yes to Carrots" they're wonderful because they don't have nasty chemicals in them like most products you'll find out there ....You can read other peoples reviews also...They smell wonderful!.... Megan, You HAVE to try this lotion. I have super dry hands in the winter as well and this lotion does wonders! It's $20.00 a pot but the entire proceeds go to various charities. (Yes, the entire $20.00!) It's called Charity Pot from LUSH Cosmetics. I love love love it! It smells great, a really natural, cocoa butter smell :) And honestly, you don't need a lot! If you have a Lush store close to you, go there and try it out! Here is the link: LUSH -- Body Care Products: The Charity Pot (hand and body lotion) |
Oops, tried to edit but ran out of time. When your hands are no longer sensitive you might want to look into lotions containing AHAs. I've been using Amlactin on my dry winter feet which has lactic acid and it really helps a lot with cell turn over (which is what you're looking for). Supposedly you can buy it at drugstores but I had to order from drugstore.com. Just check labels for alpha hydroxy acid (or specifically glycolic acid or lactic acid). |
