Question about growing hair

So i'm trying to grow my hair out to donate it. If you get a trim will it grow faster?

Suzy 01-12-2009 05:59 PM

nope. it just APPEARS to grow faster because it looks all the same length. hair is dead once it comes out of your scalp. cutting the ends off it isn't going to make the root grow any quicker.

Now if you had LONG hair, like down to your butt or knees or whatever-I think cutting it could make it grow faster because it would be less weight pulling on the root.

Hair typically grows about 1/2 inch a month, some slower some faster. If you want to donate it to like locks of love, you do know, it has to be virgin hair, right?

it's never been dyed, but they will take dyed or permed hair as long as you haven't bleached it. The only bleaching i've had done is by the sun :)

i wanted to donate my hair in the past. it took soooooo long to grow out. my hair was down to about the middle of my back when i cut it. i couldn't take it anymore. i could have donated it if i gave myself a really short bob cut but that was out of the questions.

yeah its absolutely horrible in the winter because it gets so dry from being so long. and then if i put product in it it would become greasy. i just couldn't win. then when it started to get warmer the hair all stuck to my neck. so i started wearing it up in a clip but the ends were still long enough to touch the back of my neck and i got a rash LOL i got like this prickly heat rash or something.

Marci, if you aren't set on donating it to Locks of Love, I think there is another organization that will take eight inches.

I also looked at Wigs for Kids and they need 10 inches too.

Its best to get your trimmed every 8 weeks or so just to get rid of the split/damaged ends. If you don't get rid of them then your hair breaks off at the ends and it seems like it has slowed growing (it has'nt its just breaking off-so not getting much longer). Thats why people say it grows quicker if you have it trimmed often because the hair is healthier and not breaking away. So it does SEEM like your grows longer, quicker when its trimmed regulary! Do you get my drift?:D

BTW its a great thing you are doing:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I always trim my Hair often it keeps it healthy & i believe it helps it grow better.

mizzwanned 01-13-2009 06:31 PM

I mean, thats what ive always been told, that by trimming it, it makes it grow but idk. i heard certain hair products and vitamins can make it grow faster. My hair grows super fast and it sucks cause whenever i get a new haircut like bangs or w.e. i basically waste money cause it grows out and doesnt look cool anymore. I donated before, its a good way to help:thumbup:

i forgot to write, scratch and massage your scalp a lot, it helps circulate your blood, which helps the hair grow. I read that and i believe its true, and it feels good lol

WONDERFUL idea- that is always the best part of getting your hair cut- they always scrub your head real good :D

I am in the business of Wigs and Toupees. Here is my advice for anyone who wants to donate: The longer the better! We don't glue one end of the hair to a base (so donating 8 inches doesn't make a 8 inch long wig) contrary to what some may think. The hair is hand tied into the base and has to be folded over to do so. Not necessarily folded in the middle, but two ends the same length is better than having a short end and a long end. Less fly aways and layers if is is folded in the middle. So the longer the hair is the longer you can make a wig. If you donate just 8 inches then if it is double over the length of the wig will be about 4 inched long (which is you measure 4 inches...is not that long)! Mind you...they can use shorter hair at the nape and longer hair at the crown to make a longer wig. Of course, any contribution, 8 inches or longer, is great and very helpful. :) It is so nice when people want to donate their hair. I don't make full wigs (I run a busy business and have no time to make them myself), but when people donate hair to me I use it for repairing wigs and toupees for my cancer clients and other clients who have no hair. I think it is so nice when people save their hair to donate rather than just throw it away! There are good people in this World!

Edit: Oh, and as for making it grow faster...there really isn't any magic there. Keep yourself healthy. Trimming won't help...massaging scalp is a myth. Hair growth varies. Some people grow hair fast and others...slow. :( Some people have hair growth cycles that last for many many years (they can grow longer hair) and some people have short growth cycles (they can't grow their hair past a certain length). :) I think you should stick it out. Measure it now and than again in 2-3 months and if it hasn't grown a lot...that may be the longest your hair will grow and therefore you should cut it off if the length is bothering you. :)

Thanks so much :) I didn't know that about the folding- ok i'm going to for as long as i can :)
