We had our ham and black eyed peas. :D Didn't do collards, but John missed them this year. So, we'll probably do them next year.

A SISSY???????? Excuse me???? I DO know what salt pork is.... it's the stuff that Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote about and they would fry it up and munch away. :D It's also in baked beans, is it not? :p:p

You guys are making my stomach growl. So do you just eat the beans alone? (if you don't have the greens to go along with them?) Do you put anything on them?

I fry salt pork in a pot and add the blackeyed peas with a cup of water or chicken broth. In another pot, I cook the salt pork and add the greens, turnips, collards, musturd greens. Soo Good.:D

we ate black-eyed peas, and greens (turnip greens). And we are having another tonight...


Can't get enough, Love that stuff, collard,mustard greens, turnip greens, spinach, I am a real southern girl.

We didn't!!! :eek: We do ham houck (?) in ours...but we have all been sick here, so we have been living on sprite and chicken noodle soup for our new year! YUCK :(

We had our Black Eyed Peas and greens, cornbread and chicken fried chicken...all from the Black Eyed Pea Restaurant!! It was YUMMY!!! They have those good yeast rolls with honey and butter. OMG, my mouth is watering again!! They have good fried okra too. I love southern cooking!!
Dessert...fresh blackberry cobbler. We had to be rolled out of there!! :D
We usually mix the black eye peas with white rice and it is called Hoppin' John...who knows where that name came from! LOL!!

WE DID TOO!!! Hey, Cindy, we had blackeyed peas, cabbage [Pat's favorite], candied yams, honey baked ham and cornbread [I make the best ... ask Pat!!] :p I cook blackeyes with ham & jalapinos in them and I make my cornbread from "scratch" using cornmeal, butter, egg, sour cream, milk, jalapinos and a little minced onion. It's delicious!! :thumbup::thumbup: [BTW .... we also had some leftover Peanut Butter pie .... yummmy! My recipe is from a restaurant in Birmingham and after "tweeking" it a little, have been using it for years! ;)]

I LOVE Hoppin' John - we usually have it on New Year's day but this year we just had black eyed peas.....

AND I love Black Eyed Pea -- what an incredible restaurant. Patty58 introduced me when I went to visit her last April! Texas has some mighty fine eatn'

Cindy, I had the neighborhood New Years Day party yesterday. Our neighbors from Texas/N Carolina brought Blackeyed Peas & Ham Hocks, greens, cornbread and...wait for it.....wait.....real southern Sweet Tea (DH's favorite). It was grand.

Yum....we had pork roast, dressing, collards/turnip greens, black eye peas, and mashed potatoes...and of course, sweet tea.
