Inner ear infection? Have you heard of this?

I went to the doctor because every time I tilted my head I would get vertigo. He said I have an inner ear infection? Has anyone else had this before because I have never felt this way in my life. I feel extremely tired and sick to my stomach, then if I move my head around I get really dizzy.

Then, the doctor just gives me some nasonex spray and tells me theres nothing else they can do about it. I'm so desparate for this to go away. I've been very sick since Saturday and I really need to go back to work but can't if I fall over just getting dressed. Anyone have any experience with this or how long it lasts?

I just started this on Monday. When I go from lying down to sitting up, the room spins and I feel horrible. Or if I tilt my head too far to the side. It was pretty frightening the first few times. Hope you feel better soon. This is my first bout so I dont know how long it will last either.

Wow!! Just some spray?? My kids have had a few each, and I had an ear infection also. My Dr. always gave us antibiotics, and we felt back to normal by the next day. Hope you get well soon!!

My husband has this at the moment - it started out as a cold but now is an ear infection, he's had it over a week. Went to the docs today and got antibiotics for it (amoxicillin - sp?) He is really suffering with it so I feel for you - I hope u start to feel better soon xxx xxx

It sounds like you need antibiotics

Would you consider getting a second opinion from some other Dr.? The nasal drops he/she prescribed are for allergy related issues, although it may help with your symptoms, will not cure them, if you have an inner ear infection, antibiotics are required , amoxill/amoxillin are to be used for nose/ear/throat infection, the sooner you start taking the right med's the fastest you'll start feeling better.

Thanks. I called the doctor back and told him it was getting worse and he is calling me in some antibiotics.

Inner ear problems often don't respond to antibiotics. As you said they can cause nausea and extreme dizziness. Most doctors give meclezine (sp) for it. I have intermittent problems with this for years. I know a couple people who have had such severe cases they couldn't even work or walk around but these are extreme cases

The nurse mentioned something about meclezine but I never got a script for that. I went to get the amoxicillin and I also had a script for something for the nausea. I might as well take the amoxi, just in case. Then of course, Im taking the nasonex, whatever thats doing for me, I dont know.

The doctor Im seeing is a physicians assistant. I hope I can trust him. If I dont feel better by Monday, then Im going to make an appointment with my old doctor, where I lived before I bought my house.

The inner ear is intimately tied to balance and equilibrium. Many with inner ear infections will feel extremely nauseaus and even fall over/fall down. If it's getting worse, you really need to get some of the meds mentioned above. Hope you feel better soon!

I work in a Physical Therapy clinic and we actually treat vertigo with therapy. There are numerous reasons that cause it the most common is BPPV or Benign Paraoximal Positional Vertigo for which may be possible for some of you that get vertigo when you move your head. Sometimes this can solve itself but that is not very often. Antibiotics will not help anything with the inner ear and your balance so I am confused as to why he gave you those. You may want to try going to an Ear Nose and Throat Dr. they can usually point you in the right direction to get this taken care of.

Thank you for the insight. I will keep that in mind. In the past few days, there has been some improvement. I can bend over forward now, and the nausea has subsided. The only thing I can't do yet is tilt my head back.

I've noticed recently that I grind my teeth while I'm sleeping. I wonder if that has anything to do with it since that eustation (sp) tube is so close to the jaw muscles.

Yes. Your inner ears play a very big role in your balance. I get ear infections quite a bit and fall all over the place when I do. I look like a drunk or something.
Any treatment that effects your ears, nose, throat, sinus ect is going have an effect on the others as well as they are all interconnected. (Even on your eyes in some cases.) I am a bit surprised however that he didn't give you some form of antibiotics.

He did eventually give me amoxicillin.
