[News] Dog found frozen to sidewalk People make me SICK SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- A woman was arrested after she left her dog outside in 6 degree weather, causing it to freeze to the sidewalk. A neighbor called police after the dog was stuck to the pavement for more than 12 hours. Jiffy’s owner, a 59-year-old woman, was taken into custody on suspicion of animal neglect. Animal care providers had to use warm water to gently pry Jiffy free from the ice. Locks of his hair are still frozen on the pavement in front of his house. Jiffy, an 11-year-old border collie, can now crawl but is too heavy to walk. The extra 50 pounds he’s carrying almost cost him his life. "It is very disturbing to see a dog that overweight and then to actually come up and see the dog frozen to the sidewalk. It was very, very traumatic for me,” said Carey Payne, who is with the Sheboygan Humane Society. “I've never seen a dog actually frozen to a sidewalk before.” The owner told police she made frequents trips outside to check on the dog, but workers at the Sheboygan County Humane Society suggest the dog was abused long before he was frozen. "You can overfeed a dog, and when you do the dog becomes extremely overweight, it cannot move properly, it puts a strain on all of their organs,” said Payne. “It's abuse. That’s plain and simple." Todd Wagner, the neighbor that called police, said the owner tried to free the dog. “I tried to help (the owner) with it on Wednesday night, but I got bit by it so I left it alone. She had other people coming to help and everybody did make an effort, you know it's not that it was total neglect on her fault,” he said. Investigators said the owner was released shortly after she was arrested, and it will be up to the district attorney to decide what charges she will face, if any. Aside from being overweight, the dog is in good health, according to the Humane Society. The organization said it has received multiple calls from people who are interested in adopting Jiffy. |
:( They need to strip her, wet her butt and stick her butt to the sidewalk for just as long and see how she likes it. She doesn't deserve to be in a warm jail cell. |
I agree |
This in my opinion was total neglect, we are praying the district attorney there will see fit that this will be her charge, that the collie will be placed with someone else in a loving, caring home, and that it will be fine. |

Awwww that poor baby. Thank god they got to her before anything tragic happened. |
Amazing! |
I agree!!!!!!!!! What is wrong with people????? |
That poor dog :( |
I hope something good comes of this tragic situation. A judge needs to take custody away from the owner and give the collie a chance at a real life, filled with regular walks a good diet and love. Really that is all it takes.:( |
It annoyed the SNOT out of me when the news said that her weight 'saved' her. Her WEIGHT got her into that pickle! Her "former" owner should have treated her with the respect she deserved!!! My pups would eat cookies until their tummys BURST, but I don't give them what they want!!! |

WHAT!? i am confused. so the owner left the dog outside because the dog was too overweight to move on it's own and people couldn't move the dog inside the house because it bites? is that why the dog was left outside? |
Poor dog:( (It reminds me of a programme i saw the other night called 'Fat Pets', there was a rottweiler on there who was could barely walk she was so fat. She was only 4 but probably wouldn't live much longer because of the strain on her heart and other organs. The owner didn't seem to care, the dog was like a local celebrity and I think the woman was loving all the attention -despite most of it being negative.) I agree with the poster who said she doesn't deserve a warm jail cell - stick her to the pavement in freezing temperatures.* |
THAT IS JUST HORRIBLE!!! Breaks my heart... |
OMG!!! Let me be a cop for one day!!!! I swear, payback is a bitch. I hope she gets hers...nothing deserves that lack of attention and love. I agree with the above posts. She should be sent outside in the middle of Alaska naked and hosed down....RIP poor angel. |

What the heck? It breaks my heart that people do this type of things to poor animals. The sad part is if the law intervenes...the consequences are never tough enough! |
I hope they find a loving home for the collie with a nice warm hose to live in. What is wrong with people:( |
That makes me so angry! My childhood dog we inherited from an old Italian lady that would make her a box of pasta for dinner. the...entire....box. She was a britney spanial. (however that is spelled correctly...my bad) When we got her she could barely walk and had to be carried upstairs to our house. In our case it was just a lonely old woman that loved her dog and wanted her to be happy. (this could get me in trouble) Some people do the same things with their kids. Let them eat whatever. because they just want the child to be happy. Then you have the Maury show with the 200lb 3 year old. Its very very sad. glad the poor old girl (the dog) is gonna find a better home. |

Omg!!!! That dog was so much more than overweight. I'm sure his weight did save him when thinking about how cold it must have been to get frozen to the sidewalk. The bulk allowed the dog to keep his internal organs warm, otherwise the dog would have be completely frozen. But as to the dog's weight. That is just unbelievable. I saw the same Fat Pets on Animal Planet and it is shocking to see how overweight some owners allow their pets. My girls love to run and go for walks, just as my children have high metabolisms and active lifestyles. Horrible. Have to agree with what a fitting punishment for her would be. But I doubt she'd be able to survive being frozen to the sidewalk for 12 hours. She "checked" on the poor guy. Please. Her first clue should have been the dog didn't try to come inside. Enough from me. It just makes me so mad:mad: |

I am so glad they are considering the obesity as abuse in this case as well. Dogs don't get fat unless HUMANS make them fat!! |
that is crazy! |
Maybe we should put the owner out on the sidewalk for a night. These people make me sick. |
